This invention relates to a lamp holder for'the illuminable means of oscillatory signalling elements employed in connection with a suction operated signalling apparaius of that typefor projecting and retracting signalling elements laterally with respect to the sides of the body of a motor vehicle, to conspicuously indicate during day and night to drivers of vehicles ap- V proaching from the front and rear the direction of turn, and has for its object to provide, in a' manner as hereinafter referred to, a holder of the class referred to for retaining such illuminable means stationary within and during the oscillation of the signalling element which such means form a part of, whereby the breaking of such means, i. e., an incandescent bulb is presented and the life of the latter is materially enhanced.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a lamp holder for the purpose referred to having inherent means coacting with the casing of the signalling element to permanently maintain the holder stationary in lamp holding position.
3 Further objects of the invention are to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a lamp holder which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, compact, thoroughly efiicient in its use, conveniently installed with respect to the signalling element, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel. construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically 40 described, and 'as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended. e

A lamp holder, in accordance with this invention is primarily designed for use in connection with the type of oscillatory signailing element as disclosed in my applicav tion Serial No. 348,852, filed March 21, 1929.
The signalling element as illustrated includes a vertically disposed, rectangular casing 1 having light emitting portions 2 at the front and rear thereof to .providea signalling indication and extending across such light emitting portions at the front and rear of the casing 1 are translucent, colored panels 3. Extending from thetop of the casing 1 is a hollow neck 4 which terminates 8b in a cylindrical, hollow head 5 disposed at right angles with respect to the neck 4. The head 5 is closed at its outer end and open at its inner endand is pivotally suspended, I by a pivot 7, from the outer end of a projecting and retracting rod 8 for the signalling element. The neck 4 and head 5 provide a passage for a purpose to be presently referred to.
The. signalling indications of the front and rear of the casing 1 are the same. The
front wall of'the casing 1 is detachably connected in position, by the holdfast devices 13'. The illuminable means or lamp of a signalling element is indicated at 14. The foregoing structural arrangement is referred to to show the adaptation with the signalling element of a lamp holder in accordance with this invention. The specific construction and arrangement of the elements .refered to will be found in my application aforesaidp No claim is made to such elements, as the subject matter of this applica tion relates solely to a lamp holder as clearly shown in Figure 5.
The pivot 7 for the signalling element is fixed to the head 5 and extends through an opening 1 1 formed in the outer end of the rod 8. The manner-of setting up the signalling element with respect to the rod 8 permits of the oscillation of such element when the latter is in itsprojected or signalling position.
The lamp holder, in accordance with this invention is constructed from asheet ,metal strap, possessing resiliency and of the desired width and length. The holder comprises a bottom 16, a pair of sides 17, 18 and a top formed from a pair of oppositely disposed, inwardly extending flanges 19, each having aninturned part 20. The flanges 19 extend inwardly from the upper ends of the sides 17 18. The inner ends of the flanges are spaced from each other and the space between such flanges registerswitlrthe passage provided by the neck 4: and head 5. The inturned parts of the flanges extend at an inclination and are oppositely disposed with respect to each other. The bottom 16carries a socket forming member 21 for .the lamp 14: and said member extends below said bottom 16.
The sides 17, 18, are inturned as at 22. The bottom16 is formed with an opening 23 for the passage of the circuit conductor 13 into the recess 9 where it isconnectcd with the socket forming member 21 for the lamp 1.4. The sides 17,18 are disposed at opposite inclinations and are resilient and when the holder is arranged within the casing l, the bottom 16 seats on the upper part'of the bottom otthe casing 1 and the sides17 l8 clamp against the innerfaces. of the ends of the casing =1.and this statement also applies to the flanges 19, under such conditions the holder is retained in a stationary position within the casing 1 and maintains-the lamp from shifting around in the signalling element whereby breakage of the lamp is re- .duced to a minimum.

The panel 12 extends across the openings24 .or in other words the panel 12 is interposed and the side 18 of the holder. The resiliency of the flanges 19 and sides 17, 18 constantly tends to clamp and bind the holder stationary within the casing 1.
It is thought the many advantages of a lamp holder, in accordance with this invention and for the purpose set forth can be readily understood, and although the preferred embodiment of the invention is as illustrated and described, yet it is to be understood that changes in the details of construction can be had which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.
What I claim is:
1. In a lamp holder, the combination of a casing having an entrance opening at its top for the passage therein of circuit connections, said casing being formed in its bottom with a recess, a resilient holder element conforming in contour to, positioned within andsnugly engaging the top, bottom and one side of said casing, the bottom of said element extending across said recess and provided with an opening, the top of said element being formed with a pair of oppositely extending, spaced flanges, the space between said flanges registering with the inner end of said passage, and a vertical l'amp socket integral with and depending below the bottom of said element and arranged adjacent said opening, the space between said flanges and said opening ,providing for the passage of said circuit connections into said recess and into the bottom of said lamp socket.
2. In a lamp holder, the combination of a casing having an entrance opening at itstop for the passage therein of circuit connections, said casing being formed in its bottom with a recess, a resilient holder element conforming in contour to, positioned within and snugly engaging the top, bottom and one side of said casing, the bottom of said element extending across said recess and provided with an opening, the top of said element being formed with a pair of opposltely extending, spaced flanges, the space between said flanges registering with the inner end otsaid' passage, and .a vertical lamp socket integral with and depending below the bottom of said element and arbottom of said.lamp socket, each of said flanges having an inturned inner end disposed at an inclmation, said inturned ends extending at opposite inclinations with respect to eachother.
