SAMUEL W. OHAMBERLIN, OF STONEHAM, MASSACHUSETTS.
IMPRQVEMENT IN BURNISHERS FOR BOOTS AND SHOES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,959, dated April 21, 1874; application filed March 28, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. CHAMBER- LIN, of Stoneham, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burnishers for Boots and Shoes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,'and
exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
h'ly invention relates to improvements in burnishers for boots and shoes, and particularly for the purpose of burnishing the heel, shank, and edges of a boot or shoe; and consists in so constructing a burnisher with a burnishing-surface, arranged between two handles in such a manner that the extreme ends of the said handles are located below the burnishingsurfacc of the burnisher, by which arrangement a greater leverage is obtained, and by which a steadier and firmer hold is obtained for the operator, as compared with the ordinary burnishers now in use. The face of this my improved burnisher projects somewhat below the shanks of the handles, whereby I am able to reach and burnish all parts of a heel of a boot or shoe without coming in contact with the upper, as will now be more fully shown and described.
()n the drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of my invention, and Fig. 2 repre sents a ground plan thereof.
Similar letters refer to similar parts wherever they occur on the different parts of the drawing.
a represents the operating-surface of my improved burnisher, and b b the shanks thereof, which are inserted in the handles 0 c, as shown. The burnisher a projects somewhat below the shanks I) b, as shown in Fig. 1, by which arease and steadiness, and with an increased, leverage, as compared with the ordinary bur nishers now in common use.
It is very important in burnishing heels and shanks of boots and shoes to move the burnisher steadily and with proper pressure, and this operation is very much facilitated by the construction and arrangement, as shown in the accompanying drawing and the manner herein described.
The face a of the burnisher may be made of metal or stone, or other suitable material, as may be desired.
Having thus fully described the nature, construction, and operation of my invention, I wish to secure by Letters Patent, and claim- A burnisher for boots and shoes, as herein. shown, in which the face a of the burnisher is located between two handles, 0 c, the extreme ends of which project below the face of said burnisher, as and for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand this 25th day of March, 1874.
SAMUEL CHAMBERLIN.
