PULVIERIZING MILL.
Application filed April 30, 1918, Serial No. 231,599. Renewed September 25, 19%.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, Gnonon Hour FRASER,
a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, city and State of New York, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulverizing Mills,
being a continuation in part of my application Serial No. 858,797, filed August 27,
1914, forfeited and renewed December 18, 1916, bearing Serial No. 267,401, and which has eventuated into Patent No. 1,317,014, dated September 23, 1919, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to apparatus for pulverizing materials and for separating the fine material by means of a fluid current, and aims to provide certain improvements therein.- I
Heretofore it has been common to pulverize material by means of balls or rollers revolved within an annular die against the inner periphery of which they act centrifugally to crush the material, the fine par- 26 ticles being carried out by an air current and coarse particles being intercepted by a screen surrounding the crushing chamber.
The present invention relates especially to pulverizers utilizing some of these princi- 30 pics of operation, and aims to provide improvements in pulverizers generally but especially applicable to those of this general type.
To this endin carrying out the preferred form of my present improvements I provide a casing, pulverizing elements comprising either a revolving or stationary die disposed either vertically or horizontally in the latter, rotatable balls or rolls movably carried, which if the die revolves will be carried by non-rotative movable carriers, and if the die is stationary will be carried by revolving carriers or pushers, and in either case there will be an aperture of our rent inlet centrally of the rock pan or crushing, chamber below or inwardly of the die, and a web above, leaving a passage between W for the returning air, which will jet through this passage toward the die, blowing the material into the latter and the fines upwardly and out, and I provide one or more sets ofannular troughs in the path of the air current and above the crushing elements so that this current may flow out between the annular troughs of the primary set and preferably also a secondary selecting set, which troughs afi'ord downward outlets through which large particles extracted by them may fall back into the pan, and afiord sinuous current passages through which the current may flow outwardly to float out, material fine" enough to be carried through these passages, and I provide an outer current passage descending outside of said troughs, and a lower separating chamber for as receiving the dust laden air current therefrom and separating its dust, and I provide extracting means for intercepting "or filtering floating particles from the air current returning to the pulverizing chamber so that it may be clean and continuously reused, and I provide a rotary fan, preferably an outside blower exerting the suction within the filter so as to produce a pressure vacuum or rarefaction in the outer part of the casing surrounding said parts, to draw the fine material upward by suction and lift it out of the die by the blast,
so that the outermost chamber surrounding said elements has a partial vacuum for insuring a more even and moderate current flowing through the various passages and avoiding danger of out-blowing dust, and to produce a tendency for the dust and air to enter rather than escape from the periph: cry of the casing; and I provide certain other features of improvement all of which will be more fully hereinafter set forth with reference to the accompanying drawings; in which, Fig. 1' is a vertical axial section showing the preferred form of my invention as applied to a pulverizer having a die fixed in a horizontal plane and an outside blowery Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof cut as on the planes of the lines 2-2 in Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section thereof cut on the planes of the lines 3-3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4' is a vertical axial section showing a modified form of my inventionhavin an me inside blower separably coupled to-a s ft differentially driven through the main shaft for slow speed and separably coupled to an inside motor for higher speed.
Referring to the drawingslet A indicate the main frame or casing of a pulverlze'r,
' B the inlet thereof, C the outlet thereof, D
the crushing chamber thereof, E the fine chamber thereof, F the fan or blower thereof, and G the driving means thereof.
These parts may be of any suitable construction or disposition sufficing to pulverize the material, to generate the necessary current to float out the fine product and dis- 'charge"the latter. As shown the frame or casing comprises a base'I-I which is preferably a hollow annular or cup shaped .casting adapted to rest on a support and to support or carry the other'parts of the apparatus, a top frame I, an upper shell J, and a lower shell K, which parts enclose the crushing chamber D, crushing elements C and finechamber E. l
The .crushing elements shown comprise movable and revolving rolls L within and acting outwardly toward the inner crushing face of a fixed die M removably mounted in. the base H.
The driving mechanism shown comprises a revolving carrier N connected by a shaft 0 with suitable driving gear as the belt pulley G for example. The fine chamber E is shown as an annular chamber below and surrounding the feed chamber and communicating therewith through an annular outer or egress passage loosely mounted or removable annular superposed reversely inclined baflles or members a and b spaced apart to afford between them sinuous outwardly extending current passages c and having lower outlets d affording downward material outlets for large particles precipitated'between them which serve to cause lifted material to descend in an annular path or blanket across the outflowing current so that this may extract fine material therefrom while coarse material will beint'ercepted and descend, which outlets communicate with the crushing chamher for returning such particles to the crushing elements, while the current passages communicate with the egress passage for discharging outflowing current thereto. These bafiies prevent large pieces passing to the fine chamber, permitting free'flow of current, and are not subject to the danger of puncture, clogging or wear, incident to screens. They are dis osed to avoid a direct path for the outlet 0 lar e pieces projecting from any direction an to intercept and return these for crushing, and serve to regulate the'fineness of discharge to that which can float through the passages between them.
c and select therefrom large particles which descend through the outlets h, which communicate with and return them to the crushing chamber. This secondary or selecting element S affords assurance that no material too large to float through it shall reach the fine chamber.
According to another feature of improvement I preferably provide extracting means T between the fine chamber and the return conduit and the ingress passage Q, for intercepting fine material floating in the return current. Preferably this is accomplished by providing two serles of hollow troughs i spaced apart and affording two annular foraminous walls one within the other for the inner side of the fine chamber, which troughs afford sinuous passages j between them for the inflowing current from the chamber and are staggered so that the concave side (if the inner troughs will be opposite the space between the outer troughs. These troughs extend vertically, and are preferably slightly inclined toward the approaching current at their lower parts, affording vertically elongated current passages between their edges, and affordin vertically elongated air passages or dea spaces opposite their concavities in which fine particles may'settle so that these can slide down their outer faces and be precipitated in the fine chamber. The return passage from the fine chamber is preferably an annular inwardly extending and contracting passage the bottom of which is afforded by an outwardly inclined ring or cone is below and spaced apart from the bottom wall Z of the crushing chamber to afford a horizontally inwardly extending annular space or conduit m under this, through which the return current flows from the fine chamber inwardly to again reach the crushing cham ber, and between which and the latter the return current passage is preferably closed from communication with the fine chamber, receiving return current from the filter and delivering it through the ingress assa e Q, to the crushing chamber, either irectIy if the current generating means is directly of the main casing and connected therewith by closed suction and exhaust passages constituting with the blower itself a part of the endless current passage of the pulverizer. This is preferably accomplished by mounting the blower F under and at the side of the main casing and connecting its suction pipe 01 with the passage m through the medium of an annular equalizin chamber U from which the suction pipe leads tangentially so that the exhausting current will be whirled centrifugally to insure a uniform suction all around the passage m; and by connecting the blast pipe 0 to the blower with a blast or pressure chamber V into the cylindrical wall of which it discharges tangentially to insure centrifugal whirling of the current around the inner wall of the blast chamber so that the pressure will equalize therein and flow equally upward below the lower edge of this wall through the central opening 9 therein and rise through the chamber 1" within the cones p and s to the ingress passage Q. l prefer to regulate the current by a butterfly valve t, and
to drive the blower and crushing elements with relative adjustability simultaneously from the main drive shaft a of the apparatus so that these elements will operate reciprocally and in unison to provide for variations in speed or conditions regardless of their independent adjustment from time to time.
. When the blower is placed within the main casing it will preferably operate on a vertical axis, being mounted in the chamher 1, and beinga barrel blower having a closed upper head and an annular open bottom suction communicating with the passage g to receive current therefrom and blow it into the chamber from which it will rise to the passage Q. In such case it will be driven by a motor below, or by a shaft rising to or through the shaft 0 and driven by a separate gear from the top gear thereof with an intermediate idler to multiply blower speed, as seen in Fig. 4.
According to another feature of improvement the lower part of'the casing is cut away, recessed, divided, or bifurcated, and affords separate outlets C and an intermediate way or passage W for access to or removal of the internal parts, through which the conduits 'n and 0 pass and in which the blower F may be mounted, and as shown the lower caslng K comprises a cylindrical outer wall a suspended from the under side of the base H, and carrying a plurality of flat segments or bottoms e which meet at their edges and afford removable bottom plates for I the chamber E, and through which the separate outlets C open for discharging dust into a transverse diametrically extending conveyor W which "con? verges their product, and the cylindrical wall to of the suction and blast chambers U and V, and the bottom conical wall a" of the latter, are disposed in the space between these outlets G below bottoms o and accessible therein, and the removable door or bottom 3 comprising a removably mounted reverse cone closing the bottom of the cone 00, and all these parts are separably suspended from the base and from each other by bolts 2.
According to another feature of improvement the feed inlet B comprises an annular hopper discharging centrally of the feed chamber, and a centrifugal feeder X is provided which is removably and adjustably' mounted on the carrier N and throws the material over the rolls on to an annular shelf or feeder Y surrounding the ring so that there may rest on this a mass of material to receive the impact of new feed and thus prevent wear and the material may fall by gravity annularly of the face of the ring in front of the approaching rolls.
According to another feature of improvement the rolls are pivotally or swingingly mounted on the carrier by swinging members Z and each pivoted to the carrier and each carrying a roll so that the latter can swing in and out as it works. Preferably the carrier has arms a having pivotal sockets 6 (shown in dotted lines in Fig. 1) in which removably drop pins 0 on the links Z which rest on top of the arms and have downwardly extending parts which pass in front of and beneath the rolls and have upwardly extending tubular pins 6 receiving bearing studs 7 on the rolls for rotatively carrying the latter. The-front edge g of each link preferably serves as a plow or lifter for scraping material from the bottom of the rock pan h and throwing it up on the inner face of the ring in front of the approaching roll and thusany roll may be lifted off and any link may be lifted out without disturbing other parts after the top has been opened, as the. feeder X and carrier N are proportioned to afi'ord clearance for ingress or egress of the convex face of the roll passing the concave face of the ring. Between the arms a the carrier has roll sockets i and its lowe side is concave and provided with a lip j between which andthe upturned 11p 70 of the base is afforded an annular part Z of the ingress passage Q,
My invention preferably alsoproyides for supplementing centrifuga force as a crushing'element by applyin outward. ressure to-the crushing rolls and utilizing t e reaction of one roll against another, which is preferably done by pressing means m intermediate of the members Z, acting outwardly toward these and movable radially thereof to equalize the stress between them and transmit the thrust of one to another. This may be accomplished -in any suitable way, but I prefer to use two loose radially and axlally movable rings n concentric of .otally engaging rockers" t on eac in the construction shown, and follow the movement of the rolls. 4
In operation with the construction set forth feed will enter annularly and be distributed above the crushing elements and below the selecting elements, affording its own wear cushion as it is deposited in an annular mass exteriorly of the crushing face,
and will fall slowly within the latter, so that only. material escaping crushing will de-i scend intothe pan and have to be plowed up therefrom by the auxiliary plows r on the under-side of the arms a. The outward air current will lift and blow fine material from the pan upwardly in front of the rolls, and will'lift ulverized material from the crushing cham erto within the selectors, in floating between which large particles will b'e-extracted and returned for crushin and material remaining in the current descend with it .to the fine chamber where it will precipitate and fall to the outlets, and
as the current returns from the fine cham-f vber particles still floating in it will be filtered out by and slide down the'filter tubes to extract all the fines-and return the current comparatively clean to the blower.- The concentric arrangement of passages, and centrifugal suction and discharge connections between these' and the blower will'equalizewill afford; ararefaction in the former com-- current pressures peripherally of the arts, and the connection of the suction si e of the blower with the outer chambers and the 'blast' side with the inner" chambers pared to the pressure in the latter which will tend to avoid escape of dust;
The several rolls can be/removed individually, their swinging links can be removed separately, but tlresei'and the carrier which is rcmovably mouhted ca'n be remoyed together, thus exposing the base for 11ft out the ring after the top has beentaken o frame or casing, a plura 7 including and communicating t The lower casing and parts may be dropped from the base without disturbing the superstructure, or either the outer or inner of these may be separately removed.
Pressure will be transmitted from one roll to the others, and the pressure exerted b these can beadjusted or initially set at su ficient degree to effect crushing without requiring such speed as would be requisite to do this by centrifugal force. Pressure will be equalized between the rolls and thus will be transmitted from one to another, thus relieving the driving parts and fixed bearings .from strain and utilizing the internal force stances, or the judgment 0 those skilled in the art, may dictate, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
