Description

Patented July 24, 1934 PATENT orrics runvnmznn AND snrana'ron George Holt Fraser, Brooklyn, N. Y.
Originalapplication September 12, 1924, Serial No. 737,413. Divided and this application September l, 1931, Serial No. 560,589
20 Claims.
This application is a division of my original application, filed Sept. 12, 1924, Serial No. 737,413,
proved pulverizing and separating machine.
In pulverizing and separating machines of the type shown in my'Patent No. 1,499,516, dated July 1, 1924, a fixed horizontal die and revoluble and rotatable crushing rolls have been used to pulverize the material in the endless path of a circulating separating current, fine material interceptor means below the die have been disposed "across this path for cleaning fine material from such current, and blower means have'been disposed below the cleaning means for circulating the current up through, out over, down around, and in under, the die, for floating fine material from the latter. a v h In pulverizers of-the type shown in my said 26 original application the horizontal die has been revolubly mounted and driven from below, and the revoluble and rotatable rolls have been driven from'above and have been carried by an impeller mounted in a fixed bearing and have been a0 driven from above, the blower being above the rolls and revolved with them, and a movable and revoluble joint has been provided between the movable die and the cleaning means below it.
My present invention aims to provide improvements-in pulverizing and separating machines especially applicable to those of said types, and aims to improve the operation, and increase the efhciency, simplify the manipulation, and improve the construction, of such devices.
40 life this end in carrying out the preferred form of my present-improvements as applied to a horizontal ring and suspended roll pulverizer, I preferably suspend the ring, and preferably also the roll impeller, from above the plane of revolution of the ring, or the zone in which the material to be separated is distributed, so that each may move radially to absorb vibration, and I preferably revolve both the rolls and the ring, the rolls preferably in one direction and the ring inthe other, so that the centrifugal force ofthe rolls may be used as the crushing force and the centrifugal force of the material may be used to ireep 'it on the inner face of the ring and to return it to the path of the rolls when it is displaced,'-and I preferably revolve one or more of the revoluble parts from above such plane or such zone, preferably by traction and preferably at different and relatively variable speeds, and I preferably provide means for adjusting their respective speeds, or for disconno tinuing drive of either or both, and for utilizing their weight as a traction force for driving'them from overhead. r I
And I preferably provide a vertical or open clearance joint between the cleaning means and 55 the crushing chamber, which joint preferably affords clearance for bothradial and vertical movement;
And I preferably provide a non-rotative feed conduit or pipe withinand encircled by the sus- 10 pension member ormembersby which either or all the crushing elements'are suspended;
And I preferably provide tubular and-concentric suspension members, one within and encircled by another, for suspending the crushing elements,
and extending upwardly from them to their overhead drive means, for driving them from such means; i
And I provide various other features of improvement, all of which will be more fully herego inafter set forth with reference to the accom- ,panying drawing, which is a vertical axial section, partly in elevation, of the preferred adaptation of my invention as a combined suspended roller pulverizer and air separator machine. 35 Referring to the drawing let A indicate a horlzontal ring or die, 13 the rolls, C the driving mechanism, D the feed inlet, and d the fine discharge outlet of a machine for pulverlzing and separating materials.
These parts may be of any suitable construction, arrangement 7 or operation, for pulverizing rock between the annular inner face of the ring and the peripheral outer face of the roll or rolls, for rotating the rolls, or revolving the ring, for supplying material to be pulverized by these faces, and for discharging pulverized material. a As shown the ring A is revoluble and is mounted within and in spaced relation to an outer frame or casing N enclosing an outer chamber k, and the inner annular crushing face of the ring is disposed about a substantially vertical axis and encloses a crushing chamber M having an upa per current outlet d and a lower current inlet 0' communicating with the outer chamber and affording an endless current passage up through, out over, down around, and returning in under, the ring, and this crushing chamber is enclosed above the ring by the inner casing r, and beno low the ring by a bottom wall L, which is flared outwardly and upwardly to receive and return to the crushing face of the ring uncrushed material dropping through the ring. The inner casing has a top wall b spaced from the top wall I of the outer casing and affording between them a fanway m in which the revolving blades of the blower R revolve to cause a separating fluid current to flow up through and out ing hollow outer faces opposed to the direction of flow of such current and affording current voids in which fine particles may precipitate around the return air chamber 1 and around the conical bottom wall v inwardly of and below such filtering means. As shown the outer casing N is closed by a dust cone 2' for receiving such precipitated dust and conducting it to the dust outlet 7'.
The crushing elements are shown as two revoluble and rotatable crushing rolls 'swingingly suspended from a revoluble impeller G, and the material to be crushed is shown as introduced from the feed hopper D through a non-rotary supply conduit U, communicating from without the outer casing concentrically of and to withinthe crushing chamber and discharging on to a revoluble centrifugal distributor T which distributes the material above the crushing rolls.
The inner casing r is shown as provided with a conical lip 0 around the outlet 11, and above and in spaced relation to a partition wall e around the outer edge of which the current must flow from the crushing chamber to the outlet, and the spider G is shownas provided with revolving blades 2 for whirling the current rising through the crushing chamber to centrifugally impel large particles outwardly toward the wall of the inner casing, and with scrapers 1: for scraping adhering particles from such wall, so that such particles may fall into the zone of the crushing elements while finer particles may be floated from the crushing chamber to the outer chamber.
As thus far described these parts may be of any usual or suitable construction or operation, those shown being similar to those set forth in my said original application.
According to one feature of my present invention I suspend the crushing chamber and the die A from above the latter or the distributor T preferably movably within the outer casing, so that it can move horizontally or radially to absorb shocks or vibration, preferably by a tubular dependent suspension member Z2, concentric of and preferably inwardly of the die and mounted above the latter, and movable to permit a slight horizontally swinging movement of the die to absorb vibration incident to crushing. Preferably the suspension member 22 is connected with the bottom wall L, which extends centrally down through and outwardly under the die and on whichthe die is removably mounted.
According to another feature of improvement I preferably revolve the die from overhead and above it and preferably from above the outer casing, preferably by revolving the dependent suspension member 12 by a drive wheel W carrying such member and revolubly mounted on and rotated by a drive roller X, which roller preferably has a tractional driving edge tractionally engaging a tractional under face to the wheel W and is preferably axially adjustable to vary the speed of such wheel, as by being mounted on an axially movable shaft a slidingly mounted in a bearing 1) and moved axially by a lever j, for varying the speed of revolution of the crushing chamber or die to suit such speed of the material being crushed.
Preferably according to another feature of my present improvements, I preferably movably suspend the roll carrier or impeller G from above the crushing chamber, preferably by a tubular depending suspension member S around and spaced from the ring suspension member Z2 and extending concentrically of and up through and above the outer casing and revolubly mounted thereabove, so that it and the die suspender can move relatively radially vibratorily to independently absorb vibrations of the dependent crushing elements carried by them respectively.
As shown the impeller S is carried by a drive wheel Y mounted on a ball bearing m and having a top traction face engaged and driven by the edge traction face of a drive roller Z mounted on a drive shaft c, which is axially movable, as by a lever g, to move the rollers Z radially of the wheel Y to vary the speed of revolution of the crushing rolls to adapt this to the material being crushed.
As shown the shaft a is tubular and the shaft 0 traverses it, and these shafts are feathered together as by a pin d in a slot e. Preferably the impeller suspender S carries and revolves the blades of the blower R, and encircles the die suspender, and both encircle the supply conduit U.
Preferably the outer casing M is below and suspended from an overhead support or main frame Q, above which the impeller and die suspenders are rotatively mounted, and which carries the drive'mechanism.
According to another feature of the present invention I preferably provide vertical and horizontal clearance between the non-rotary filter P and the movable crushing chamber, preferably by spacing the upper ends of the baffles 1 below the bottom wall L of the crushing chamber and inwardly of a guard lip or projection t extended downwardly from such wall, to permit freedom for vertical and radial movement of the die or chamber, as well as its revolution relatively to the filter.
In operation, material to be crushed descending through the supply conduit to the distributor T will be thrown on to the crushing face of the die where it will be'held by centrifugal force until pulverized by the rolls. The revolving fan blades will cause a separating current to flow up through the crushing chamber to float fine material into the outer chamber, and to return under the die through the filter P to clean dust from the returning current as it returns to the inlet 0'. The die or crushing chamber will be suspended vibratorily by its suspension member 12, and the spider G will be suspended vibratorily by its suspender S, so that each can swingingly absorb vibrations incident to their operation. Each will be rotatively mounted and driven above and without the zone of the vortex ring of circulating separating fiuid, and their relative speeds of revolution will be varied as desired.
It will be understood that my invention is not limited to the particular details of construction, arrangement, use, or combination oi parts, set forth as constituting its preferred form, since my improvements can be availed otin whole or'in.
