UNITED STATES ATENT OFFICE.
IBEDPAN.
Application filed January 7, 1924. Ser1'a1 No. 684,807.
To all whom it may concern."
Be it known that I, CLARENCE E. FARNs- WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hoisington, in the county of Barton and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedpans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptors and more particularly to the class of bed pans, and has for its primary object the provision in the manner as hereinafter set forth, of a bed pan adapted to both male and female use, and having a centrally positioned shiftable means to provide a deflecting shield.
Another object of this invention is the provision in the manner as hereinafter set forth, of a bed pan having a shiftable member occupying the central position in and extending toward the front of the vessel to act as a support or retractor for a portion of the body of the patient.
Another object is the provision in the-manner as hereinafter set forth, of a bed pan having a centrally positioned retractor and shield pivotally supported between the inwardly extending edges of the panand adapted to be removed for the purpose of cleansing and sterilization.
A still further and final object of this invention is the provision, in the manner as hereinafter set forth, of a bed a shiftable shield and deflector pivotally connected thereto, the use of which will add greatly to the comfort of the patient, but will not hinder easy and thorough cleaning of the vessel, and will be of a construction which is light, strong, and inexpensive to manufacture.
A better understanding of the invention may be had from aconsideration of the following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specificatiomwvith the understanding that the invention is notconfined to any strict conformity withthe showing of the drawing, but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.
pan having In the drawings:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of a bedpan and shield constructed in accordance with this invention.
F ig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section of the same.
F ig. 3 isa detail perspective view of the removed shield, and,
Fig. 4 is a detail view showing means for the supportof the shield in the pan and also showing in dotted position, the raised and lowered position 'of'the shield.
Referring now to the drawingsin detail, wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the severalviews of the drawings, a bed pan body is indicated at 1, whiclrhas the usual open top, the top edge being partially surrounded by the usual inwardly extending and clownwardly inclined flange '2, which flange has its inner edge bent and extended downwardly toward the-bottom of thepan, as at .3. This depending flange 3 is broken at diametrically opposite points, and the points in the inwardly extending flange adjacent the break in the downturned flange-3, there are formed recesses 4 and positioned beneath these recesses there are U-shaped bearing members 5. These bearing members 5 may be made from separate-material and may be secured to the under surface of the inwardly extending flange beneath the recesses 4 or the inwardly extending flange 2 may be pressed inwardly at these points adjacent the break in the depending flange 3 to form the recess and the bearings 5 at one'operation.- The; broken ends of the depending flanges 2 which terminate on either side of the bearings 5 are formed in the following manner. The ends oftheflange 3 which act terminate rearwardly of the bearings 5 are 7 which terminate upon the forwardside of the bearings o aresubstantially vertical at the upper portion or where theupper part of the flange 3 connects with the upper part of the bearing 5, and the lower portion of each end ofthis flange is slightly rounded as at 7.
Adapted to be supported in the bearings 5, is a substantially yoke-shaped member 8 having the centralforwardly extending portion 9 of substantial thickness and further being sli htly concaved at its central portion and the sides of this member 9 are tapered off into relatively narrow portions 10 which extend outwardly at right angles with respect to the longitudinal axis of the portion 9., and these right angularly extending portions are bifurcated, and one of the furcations on each side, the upper, is rolledto provide a pivotal arm 11, while the other fur-cation is curved toward the under side of the member 8 to provide a stop member 12, the purpose of which will become evident. Thepivot arms 11, when the member 8 is placed in position, occupy the bearing 5, and are rounded to turn therein, while the curved top of the stop members 12 engage the surface 6 when the shield or retractor member 8 is in a horizontal position, and
ofthe member 12 engage the 7 of the depending flanges 8 the edges 13 other surface to retain the member 8 in vertical position.
The position occupied by. and the part played by the stop member 12, will become apparent upon a study of Fig. 4 of the drawing, there being here shown in dotted lines the position assumed by the stop 12 when the retractor is in vertical and also when it is in the horizontal position. The front and rear edges of the retractor are curved, as at 14, to remove any sharp edges from the material which would come in con tact with the body of the patient.
What I claim is I 1. The combination with a bed pan having its top formed with a pair of spaced bearings of, a combined deflector and support positioned within said top and formed with a pair of bifurcated extensions, one of the furcations in 'each of said extensions being seated in one of said bearings, and the other furcations engaging under the top to provide a stop.
2. The combination with a bed pan having its top formed with a pair of spaced bearings of, a combined deflector and support positioned within said top and formed with a pair of bifurcated extensions, one of the furcations in each of said extensions being seated in one of said bearings, and the other furcations engaging underthetop to provide a stop, the furcations seated in said bearings being rolled and of semicircular contour.
8. The combination with a bed pan having its top formed with a pair of spaced bearings of,'a combined retractor and defiector positioned within said top and formed with a pair of bifurcated extensions,
positely one of the furcations in each of said extensions being seated in one of said bearings, and the other furcations engaging under the top to provide a stop, the said bearingsbeing arranged below the upper surface of said top.
4c. The combination with a bed pan having its top formed with a pair of spaced bearings of, a combined retractor and defiector positioned within said top and formed with a pair of bifurcated extensions, one of the furcations in each of said extensions being seated in one of said bearings, and the other furcations engaging under the top to provide a stop, the said top having recesses formed therein and the said bearings being arranged beneath said top and opening into said recesses.
5. In a bed pan, a'con-i-bined support and deflector element having a flaring body portion provided at one end with a pair of oppositely disposed bifurcated lateral extensions, body to and on a bed pan in a horizontal or vertical position. i
6. In a bed pan, a combined support and deflector element having a flaring body portion providedat one end with a pair of oppositely disposed bifurcated lateral extensions, for connection and supporting said body to and on a bed pan in a horizontal or vertical position, said body portion being concave in cross section.
7. In a bed pan, a combined support and deflector element having a flaring bod y portion provided at one end with a pair of oppositely disposed bifurcated lateral extensions, for connection and supporting said body to and on a bed pan in a horizontal or vertical position, one of the furcations of each extension acting as a pivotal connection between the said element and pan and the other of said furcations engaging the said pan to provide a stop.
8. In a bed pan, a combined support and deflector element having a flaring body portion provided at one end with a pair of oppositely disposed bifurcated lateral extensions, for connection and supporting said body to and on a bed pan in a horizontal or vertical position, one of the furcations of each extension being rolled and semi-circulzr in contour to provide a pivotal connection between the said element and pan and the other of said furcations engaging the said pan to provide a stop.
9. In a bed pan, a combined support and deflector element having a flaring body portion provided at one end with a pair of opdisposed bifurcated lateral extenconnection and suspending said sions, for
