. V Specification of Letters Patent.
Application-filed January 29, 1920; Serial No. 354,988. I
To aZZ whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, JOSEPH KARRAKIS, a
citizen of the United States, andfa resident of Newark, County of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedpans, of wh ch the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved bed pan which is designed to be comfortable for the patient, particularly male patlents- The invention consists of a bed pan whlch sup orts a patient so that he is comfortable an when the use of the bed .pan is completed, not only is the patient clean, but the bed pan itself can be easily .emptled and cleaned, thus lightening the labors of the nurse, but also providing for more sanipossible with the old style of bed pan; i
' The main object of the invention is to provide a bed pan with a main opening that is usually provided, and in addition a suss pensory which is located-just in frontof the main opening. This suspensoryis usually-in the form of a bridge-likestructure extending transversely across the pan and *slightlyhollowed atthe top to form a de-' and Fig. 2 is a. longitudinal section on'line 2-1-2 in Fig. 1.
pressed portion, and this is "usually immediately behind and underneath a downwardly and forwardly extending tube which is disposed and formed 1 so as to be used as a urinal.
The invention is illustrated in ,theaccompanying drawing, .in which Figure 1 is a top view 'ofrny improved bed pan,
The bed pan'lO comprises a body portion,-
which is of substantially flat shape to make it more comfortable for the patient, the in- .terior thus forming a shallow receptacle which is smooth onv theinside, so as to offer no projections 01" recesses to hinder easy and thorough cleaning." The bed pan has a top 11, which is usually slightly tapered toward the rear, as at 12, this part being generally slightly lconcave. The top has the usual main opening 13 of the proper. size, and I also provide a front openlng 14;,
which is adapted for use as a clean-out opening.
. Patented Dec. 13,1921; I
- Just in front of'the opening 123T pro videa suspensory 15, this suspensory being sllghtly elevated so as to support the scrotum so that it can not possibly come in connot only serves as a suspensory, but also a more light and easilyl'handled utensill.
as a urinal.
above andin front ofthe'suspensory 15. i
7 tact wlth anyj. feces. In the'form shown, the suspensory 1s formed by concaving the. upper face of a bridge-like strip -16 between the openlngs 13 and 14;] Thisstrip I I strengthens the receptacle and thus permits in the part 15 so that in cleaning that part will not act as a receptacle or gathering place for water.
The. depth and the relative of the parts can be varied according to the partic-. ular needs of different patients, but the arrangement "of the suspensory between the main opening and theurinalis called for l as it keeps the patient clean and lightens the'work of the attendant. v I .cl'aim:
1. A bed pan having its top provided with l the usual main opening, a tube at the front extending forwardly and downwardly into f the pan, the pan being formed between the, outer endjof the tube and the forwardedg'e ofthe main opening so as'to provide a suspensory, 1 1
v 2. A bed pan having its top provided withv the usual main opening, a tube at 'the frontj extending forwardly and downwardly into the pan, the pan being formed betweenthe of the main opening into a narrow transverse brldge-llke suspensory.
outer end of the tube and the forward edge '5;
3. A bed pan having its top provided withi the usual main opening, a urinal tube at the front with its inlet end opening rearwardly slightly above and in front of the main opening, and a suspensory part be tween the said end of the tube and the main opening.
V 4. A bed pan having its top provided with the usual main opening, a supplemental opening atthe front of the pan having a transverse bridge-like suspensory between the openings, and a forwardly and down- 10 wardly inclined tube extending from the front edge of the suspensory into the front part of the pan. i
In testimony that I claim the foregoing, I have hereto set my hand, this 28th day 15 of January, 1920. V i a r JOSEPH KARRAKIS.
