This invention relates to a certain improvement in mattresses, such as are made up of a series of sections, which, as heretofore constructed, can only be used on a bed when each is placed parallel with the other.
The object of my invention is to construct the sections of a mattress in the form of a rectangle, the short sides of which are half the length of their long sides, so that each can be placed on a bed parallel with the other, or one arranged transversely on the bed, and the remaining two parallel, with their ends abutting against the side of the transversely-arranged section.
The invention consists in a mattress made in three equal independent and disconnected sections, each section forming a rectangle, the short sides of which are half the length of its long sides, so that when fitted in a bedstead, each of the sections can be removed and replaced in a changed position, or in the position. of another section in the mattress, while at the same time the shape of the bedstead is maintained.
The weight of the body on the bed can thus be brought to bear on each of the sections, transversely on all, or transversely on one, and longitudinally ontwo, whereby the symmetry and regularity of form of the mattress can be preserved for an unlimited period of time.
In the drawings, the letter A designates a bedstead; and B is my mattress, the outline of which is made to correspond to that of such bedstead, and which is placed therein, in the usual manner. Said mattress is made in three parts or sections, B B B of a rectangular shape, two of which, in this example, are located lengthwise, and one crosswise, to the bedstead. Said sections, however, can also be arranged parallel to each other across the bedstead, the short ends of the sections being onehalf the length of their long sides, and onethird the length of the bedstead.
Each section of the mattress is preferably made up of a series of columns, composed of a separate envelope, filled with hair or other material suitable for the purpose.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- The sectional mattress constructed, as herein shown and described, of the three equal sections B B B each section forming a rectangle, the short sides of which are one-halt the length of their long sides, as and for the purpose specified.
