j UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LORIN PATTERSON RIDDLE, OF ASI-ILAND, OHIO.
BLACKBOARD-ERASER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 416,184, dated December 3, 1889.
Serial No. 323,585. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, LORIN PATTERSON RID- DLE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Ashland, in the county of Ashland and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Blackboard-Eraser, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to blackboarderasers of that class employing felt and other suitable substances, and among the objects in view are to provide an eraser so arranged as to produce a series of drafts through the same induced by the movement of the eraser while passing over the board, whereby the crayon-dust is lifted from the board by the eraser and retained therein, and thus the surface of the board can always be efficiently cleaned.
Vith these general objects in view the invent-ion consists in an eraser having a series of longitudinal and transverse channels formed in its erasing-face by a seriesof blocks of felt placed at equal distances apart.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective of an eraser constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a detail in perspective of one of the felt blocks.
Like numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures of the drawings.
1 represents the usual back of the eraser, preferably formed of suitable wood, and 2 the eraser-surface, preferably formed of felt and provided with a series of longitudinal grooves 3 and transverse grooves 4:. In my present invention I form these grooves by pasting upon the surface of the back a series of uniformly-arranged rows of independent square or, it may be, other shaped felt blocks 5, each block being isolated from the adjacent blocks, and thereby forming the grooves or recesses described. If desired, these blocks may be of diamond shape, whereby the grooves will be diagonal and at acute and obtuse angles to each other. If desired, also, the blocks may be formed integral-that is, pressed by suitable dies-so as to have a backing of felt, which backing is integral with the blocks; or said blocks may be pasted toa suitable backing of fabric material and the backing pasted to the face of the back of the brush; but for obvious reasonsI prefer the construction described.
Having described my invention, what I claim is 1. An eraser for the purpose described, having a series of grooves crossing each other formed in its face, substantially as specified.
2. An eraser for the purpose described, the back of which is provided with a series of angular felt blocks secured thereto in regular rows and isolated from each other to form a series of intermediate longitudinal and trans verse grooves, substantially as specified.
3. An eraser for the purpose specified, the back of whichis provided With a series of independent blocks formed of felt and glued thereto, and arranged in regular rows and isolated from each other to form intermediate draft-inducing open-edged spaces extending throughout the length and breadth of the back, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
LORIN PATTERSON RIDDLE.
