IMPROVEMENT IN BED-BOTTOMS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,281, dated April 7 1874 application led March 24, 1873.

To all rwhom 'it may concer-n:

Be it known that I, ABRAM ADAMS, of Ohicago, county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bed-Botto1ns, of which the following is a specification:

The nature of my invention relates to an improvement in bed-bottoms; and consists in suspending the slats by means of rubber rings which catch over pins or projections on the cross-pieces, and under hooks on the slats, making each slat independent, and a spring in itself, as will be more fully described hereafter. y

Figure l of the accompanying drawing rep resents a cross-section of my bed. Fig. 2 represents a plan view of a part of one end of the slats, showing the orifice through which the metallic rod is passed. Fig. 3 represents a side view of one of the slats with `the connecting-rod passed through the orifice.

Across each end ofthe frame a is secured a cross-piece, b, upon which the weight of the slats and bed comes. Projecting from these cross-pieces are a number of pins or projections, o, over which the rubber rings c catch, there being a head or flange formed upon the end of each one so as to prevent the ring from slipping oft'. Passing up through each slat e is a small rod, t', having its upper and lower ends bent at right angles, so as to form a hook, under which the rubber ring catches and supports the slat in position, the lower end of the rod being bent or flattened to prevent the slat from falling off.

It will be seen that each slat near each end is provided With an orifice, fr, for the passage of the angular rods t'. These rods are easily passed through the orifices, and can be readily attached or detached at Will. For ship- Inent, the end rails b, with screws or headed pins o, the rubber bands c, the angular rods i, and the perforated slats e, can be detached, packed into a small compass, and, when ready to be placed into position, be easily adjusted together by the seller or user.

In case of breakage or disorder any one part can be easily and cheaply replaced.

Being aware that the slats of a bed-bottom suspended by rubber or other springs, have been known and used before, I do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming such` as my invention.

These devices form an exceedingly simple and cheap bed-bottom, each slat being an independent spring i n itself, and there being no parts to get out of order or repair.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

The angular detachable metallic rods i and perforated slats e e, in combination with the rubber bands c c, and the pins o o secured to the bedstead, all as and for the purposes herein set forth.
