IMPROVEMENT IN REIN-HOLDERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. llll, dated March 31, 1874; applicaticn filed February 5, 1874.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, IsArAH J. ROBINSON, of St. Johnsbury, in the county of Caledonia and State of Vermont, have invented a new Iniprovernent in Rein-Holder; andI do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, and which said drawings constitute part ot' this specification, and represent, in-

This invention relates to a device designed to be attached to the dash-rail of carriages or other desired position, to hold the reins when not required for driving or like purposes; and it consists in a plate having a vertical recess with converging sides, combined with a hin ged jaw lying in said recess with corresponding converging sides, or wedge shape, so th at when the rein or reins are placed in the said recess the said jaw will clamp and hold the rein against the side of the recess.

Ais the base or plate, having in its upper end a slot or recess, B. (See Fig. 4.) The sides of this recess are inclined to each other, or converge forward, as seen in Fig. 2. On the plate, at a point, a, below the slot B, alever, C, is hun g, the upper end D of this lever formed so as to enter the slot B, as seen in Fig. 2, the sides of the end D converging' corresponding to the sides of the slot. This end D constitutes the jaw to gripe the rein against the sides of the slot B, as seen in Fig. 2, d representing the rein, the natural draft upon the rein tending to draw the jaw D more closely into the slot, and thus tighten the grasp. The lower end ofthe lever O serves as a handle by which to draw the jaw D from the slot, and beneath the lever a spring, H, is placed, the tendency of which is to hold the .jaw in the slot.

To secure the holder to the dash-rail of a can riage a clamp-piece, E, is applied t'o the rcverse side of the plate and held by a screw, F. This piece E is placed upon one side of the dash or rail, the plate A upon the other, and these two parts irnily clamped upon the dash or rail, as the case may be, by means of the screw F.

If preferred, the plate may be secured in other positions without the use ot' the clamppiece E.

I am aware that a rein-holder, consisting of a spring-lever and a base or plate, so that the rein could be held or clamped between the lever and plate, is not new. I therefore do not wish to be understood as broadly claiming' such a device.

I claim as my inventionl. A rein-holder, consist-ing of the plate A,

with the slot B, and lever C with the jaw D corresponding to the said slot B, substantially as described.
