L. M. DABNEY WINDOW SHELF Filed Jan. 16. 1922 Patented Apr. 22, 1924.
PATENTOFFICE.
IJLLIAN DABNEY, OF ROSEDALE, KANSA S.
wmnow SHELF.
Application filed January 16, 1922. Serial a... 529,713.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LILLIAN M. DABNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rosedale, in the county of Wyandotte and State of Kansas, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Window Shelves, of which the following is a specification.
Myjinvention relates to improvements in window shelves.
The object of my invention is to provide a window shelf which is simple, cheap to make, which is durable and not liable to get out of order, and which may be readily attached to or detached from any ordinary window.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Fig. l is a perspective view of my improved window shelf and its attaching an gle member.
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of my 1mproved shelf shown attached to the sill and portions adjacent thereto'of a window.
Fig. 3 is a cross section of what is shown in Fig. 2.
Similar reference characters designatesimilar parts in the different views.
In the preferred embodiment of my invention, my improved window shelf comprises a sheet metal body having a flat horizontal portion 1 provided at one endwith a downwardly extending flange 2, which, when the flat portion 1 rests upon an ordinary window sill 3, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3, the flange 2 will be disposed between the sill 3 and the lower rail 4 of the lower sash of the window.
The shelf is provided at the other end of the flat portion 1 with a leg 5 which inclines downwardly toward the window and which. at its lower end is provided with a vertical flange 6, which is adapted to be disposed between the usual casing board 7 which is below the sill 3, and the vertical flange 8 of a horizontal angle member, the horizontal flange 9 of which is fastened tothe lower edge of the casing board 7 by suitable securing devices, such as nails 10.
In applying the shelf to a window, the horizontal flange 9 of the angle member is first attached to the lower edge ofthe casing board 7, as shown in Figs. 2 and 3. The
flat portion 1 is then placed upon the inner portion 3 of the window sill, with the flange 2 disposed between the sill 3 and the lower sash rail 4. The flange 6 is then inserted between the casing board 7 and the flange 8 of the angle member.
The shelf will thus be securely held in operative position on the window sill. It may be readily removed from the latter by lifting the flanges 2 and,6 out of their operative positions between the sash rail 4 and sill 3 and the casing board 7 and 'flange8.
I do not limit my invention to the structure shown and described, as manymodifications, within the scope of'theappended' be made without departing} Y leg to that portion of the window casing which is under the sill, substantially as set forth. 7 a
2-. 'A window shelf comprising a, flat portion adapted to ,rest upon a window sill and having at one end a downwardly extending flange adapted to be disposed between the window sill and the lower sash, the shelf having at the other end of the flat portion an inclined leg, and a member having means for'being secured to the window] casing under the sill, said' leg having a flange ada ted to be inserted between said last named member and said casing, substantially as set forth.
. 3. A window shelf comprising a flat portion adapted to rest upon a window sill and having at one end a downwardlyv extending flange adapted tobe disposed between the window sill and thelower sash, the shelf having at the other end of the flat portion an inclined leg having at its lower end a flange, and an angle member having means for attaching one of its flanges to the lower edge of that portion of a window casing which is under the sill, the flange of the leg being adapted to-be inserted be- Y connection with the sill, lower sash and casmember havin one of its flanges secured ing board under' the sill of a window, the to the lower e e of said casing board, t-he 10 said shelf comprising a flat portion which flange of the eg being disposed between rests on said sill and has a flange extendsaid board and the other flange of the angle 6 ing downwardly between the lowersash and m m er, substantially as set forth.
