Description
' A i'il 22 1924- J. WILLIAMS AMPLIFYING HORN Filed Sent. 18. I922 Patented Apr. 22, 1924.
PATENT OFFICE.
JOIN E. WILLIAMS, OF DULUTH, MINNESOTA.
AMPLIFYING HORN.
Application filed September 18, 1922.
a proved form of horn which in 0 eration will render the sound transmitt therethrough more pleasing and distinct than heretofore experienced in the common form of such device.
The novel advantages of my present invention will appear evident in the further description thereof, though the same is obviously far from doing justice to the improvement as compared with the actual re- 2 sults accomplished.
In the accompanying drawing, forming.
part of this application and in which like reference characters indicate like parts: Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved amplifying horn, and
Figure 2 is a cross sectional view taken on the line 2' -'2, Figure 1.
Broadly considered, the invention simply embodies the incorporation of air chambers upon opposite sides of the horn, intermediate the ends thereof, said air chambers in the embodiment here illustrated occurring at 11, they being the full height of the side walls of the horn and any thickness de- 4 sired, preferably with their end terminations converging into the side walls of the horn some distance from the extreme ends thereof so that both the external and in- Serial No. 588,841.
ternal lines of the horn are gracefully curved. The external walls of these chambers are indicated at 2, while the internal walls are indicated at 3.
Through the internal Walls 3 are formed openings 4 which I prefer to make in the form of an Amati scroll, the same having been established as an ideal form of opening in chambers for similar purposes, as for example in various stringed instruments.
In the construction of this horn I prefer to use Well seasoned spruce wood, the same being known to have exceptional qualities for such.
A horn built in accordance with the above description has proven capable of quite remarkable results in amplifying sound transmitted therethrough by sympathetic vibration.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
A sound amplifying horn arcuate in side elevation and rectangular in cross section throughout comprising spaced primary side walls parallel for at least half their length and flaring outwardly arcuately for the remainder of their length, said walls having openings therethrough, and auxiliary side walls substantially straight throughout their entire length and extending from the ex treme outer extremity of the primary walls to a point adjacent the opposite ends of the primary walls and where the latter are parallel, the edges of all the side walls being securely attached to the top and bottom walls of the horn.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN E. WILLIAMS. t Witnesses:
