CIGAR AND CIGARETTE HOLDER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, Josnrn T. CREMANS, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar and Cigarette Holders, of

which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to cigar and cigarette holders, and has as its particular object the construction of a holder having an attachment by which the butt of the cigar or cigarette may be ejected from the holder.

The object of the invention is to provide a construction for this purpose, which when applied to a holder, does not mar its looks, which takes up very little space, which is simple in construction, and effective in operation, and which does not interfere with the action of the holder.

With these and other objects in view, my invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combinations and arrangement of parts hereinillustrated and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention, in the several figures of which like parts are similarly designated, Figure 1 is a view in elevation of a holder showing my improved ejector attached thereto. Fig. 2 is a View in end elevation. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view, taken substantially on the line 33, Fig. 1, and looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal sectional view through the outer portion of the holder, with the ejector in its innermost position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged section on the line 55, Fig. 4, and looking in the direction of the arrow. Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional view of a modified form of the holder, taken at a point similar to Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 4, showing the ejector in its outermost or ejecting position.

Referring to the drawings, 1 designates in general the holder, comprising the socket portion 2 and the bit or mouth-piece portion 3. Fitted on the outer end of the socket 2, is a metallic band 4, which is bent or stamped outwardly, as shown at 5, to form an off-set longitudinal groove or recess 18 from end to end of the band and between the socket member 2 and the stamped up part of the band 4, in which is slidably mounted the ejector. The outer face or wall of the stamped up or recessed part 5 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 7 somewhat narrower than the bottom wall of the recess in the band and closed at both ends to limit the movement of the ejector. The said ejector comprises the portion 6 adapted to slidably fit in the recess between the band and socket of the holder and overhanging the slot in the recess and slightly longer than the band, and having a lug 8 cut out of and within the inner end of the strip 6, and bent at right angles so as to project through the slot'7, the inner end of the strip 6 projecting beyond the band when the ejector is in its innermost position, as shown in Fig. 4, and engages the outer end of the socket to afford a support for the ejector strip when it is in its outermost or ejecting position, as shown in Fig. 7. On the inside of the socket 2 is moulded or otherwise formed a groove 10, and the ejector strip is folded back upon itself about the outer edge of the socket 2, and the folded back portion fits within and slidably engages the recess or groove 10 with its inner face forming a chord across the circular opening of the socket and affording a seat on the strip for the cigarette or like article contiguous with the inner wall of the socket. The inner end of the ejector strip 11 is bent at right angles, as shown at 12, and extends into the opening or bowl of the socket and terminates in an enlarged portion 13, which is substantially concentric with the opening in the socket. A notch 14 is formed in the outer edge of the socket in line with the groove 10, so as to permit the bend or fold of the ejector strip to lie therein flush with the outer edge of the holder, as shown in Fig. 4. It will be observed also that the inner end 15 of the ejector strip 6 projects beyond the band, and when the ejector is moved to its outermost or ejecting position, this projection or extension 15, will engage the outer wall of the socket and serve the purpose of holding and supporting the ejector more securely and firmly when it is moved to its. outermost position, as shown in Fig. 7.

In the modified form shown in Fig. 6, instead of forming a recess or groove on the inner face of the socket for the ejector strip, and as described and claimed in my application filed October 20, 1920, Serial No. 418,220, the portion of the ejector projecting into the socket may be bent or curved.

transversely to conform to the curvature of the wall of the socket, and the outer longitudinal corners or edges may be cut away, as indicated by the dotted lines 16, Fig. 6, so that the inner face of the ejector strip will form a chord across the socket opening, and thus aliord a seat for the cigar or other article placed in the holder contiguous with the walls of the socket, whereby the ci arette or the like placed in the holder will t tightly and thus prevent the air from entering between it and the holder rather than through the cigarette or other article, thereby enhancing the drawing effect upon the cigar or other article in the holder by the user, to produce the effective combustion of the cigar or other article, which would not be possible with a holder of this sort, it there was any leakage of air around the cigar or other article and into and through the holder.

In use, the ejector is positioned within the holder, as shown in Fig. l, and the cigarette or other article is inserted in the socket until the inner end contacts with the enlarged portion 13 of the ejector. The holder is used in the usual manner, and until the cigarette or like article is consumed to a point near the socket, when the ejector strip is moved outwardly by pressing against the projecting lug or finger-piece 8, to the vposition shown in Fig. 7. This causes the enlarged portion 13 to push the unconsumed portion of the cigarette out of the socket, thereby quickly and easily removing the stub, without danger of burning the fingers, or the necessity of using some sharp article to dig into the holder to remove the stub or unconsumed part of the cigarette.

What I claim is:

1. A holder for cigars and the like, comprising a bit and a socket, a band fitted upon the end of said socket and provided with an outwardly projecting longitudinally grooved portion from end to end having a slot in its outer wall closed at both ends, an ejector strip slidably mounted in the grooved portion of the band between the outer wall of the socket and said band, a finger-piece on the ejector strip projecting through the slot in the grooved portion of the band and adapted to engage the end walls of the slot to limit the inward and outward movements of the ejector, said ejector strip being bent back upon itself around the outer edge of the socket and extending into and engaging the inner wall of the socket and having its inner end bent upwardly and projecting into the opening of the socket.

2. A holder for cigars and the like, comprising a bit and a socket, a band fitted upon the end of the socket and provided with an outwardly projecting longitudinal groove from end to end having a slot in its outer wallclosed at both ends, an ejector strip slidably mounted in the groove in said band, a finger-piece on said ejector strip projecting through the slot in the grooved portion of the band and adapted to engage the end walls of said slot to limit the inward and outward movements of the ejector, said ejector strip being bent back upon itself around the outer edge of the socket and extending into and engaging the inner wall of the socket and terminating in an upstanding ejecting portion, the said ejector strip provided with an extension beyond its finger-piece adapted to extend over and engage the inner end wall of the slot in the band when the ejector is in its innermost position and to engage the wall of the socket and support the ejector when in its outermost or ejecting position.
