To @ZZ whom t may con cervi Be it known that li, RALPH H. KINGDOM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chi-` cago, in the county oi Cook and lState of lllinois, have invented certain new and uset'ul improvements in lnipact-,Cushioning Devices, ot which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to impact cushioning devices Yt'or closures such as windows, doors and the like, and is particularly concerned with the provision ot a device ot this hind which is especially adapted tor use with automatically operable windows and similar cont-rivances.
@ne of the principal objects ot the invention is to provide such a device which will operate entirely automatically without any especial adjustn'ient or attention and which is so constituted that the impact will not be cushioned when the window closes rather slowly and with comparatively slight nioinentuin but which will operate `with certainty to cushion the impact when the window closes with comparatively great .momentum, that is when considerable noise, besides damage to the sash might otherwise result.
Another object ot the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be installed in a window casing ot standard construction without necessitating any considerable reconstruction ot the casing.
Other objects, advantages and uses of this cushioning device will appear las the 'followingl detailed description progresses which is to be read in connection with the accompanying drawings wherein- Fig. 1 is a front elevation of a window equipped with a device constructed in accordancev'ith this invention tor cushioning the impact of the sash with the casing. The casing is broken away at one point to reveal more clearly the manner ot attaching the device to the casing.
Fig. 2 is a central, longitudinal, vertical section of the device, the elements of which are shown in their respective inoperative positions.
Fig. 3 is a similar section wherein the parts are illustrated in operative position.
Fig. 4 is a transverse, vertical section taken on lines 4 4: of Figs. 2 and 3 looln ing in the direction indicated by the arrows.

Referring to the drawings, and for the present to Fig. 1 particularly, reference numeral 1() represents a window casing comprising a frame 11 and face boards 12. Movable between the usual beads in the casing 10 is a sash 13 in connection with which the impact cushioning device of the present invention is adapted to operate.
The reference numeral 14 is applied to the cushioning device as a Whole. It consists of a two-piece metal casing 15 made up of the halves 15a which are reversible and interchangeable. A closure 16 in the forni of a thin sheet metal strip overlies the edges of an opening 17 cut into the upper cross piece ot' the frame to receive the casing 15. This closure is fastened to the nether side of the cross piece by screws 18 which are received in screw holes in the lugs 19 on the halves 15a. These lugs, as most clearly shown in Fig. project from opposite ends of the halves 15a and are notched as shown,` the notches when the halves are placed in register, forming screw holes lto receive the screws 18. The closure seals the lower open end ot the casing 15 and has a central opening 20 to receive a coiled compression spring 21. y
A bolt 22 passing through a collar 23 and a channel or trough-shaped frame 24 receives a nut 25. 'The collar 23 has an overturned edge which embraces the end of the spring 21 and secures the same to the :trame 2li. lr" desired the spring may be sweated in the colla-r to secure a permanent connection therewith. The frame 24e is reciprocable in the casing 15 and is preferably -inaintained by gravity, normally in the position shown in Fig. 2 at the lower end of the casing :in engagementy with the closure 16.
