ADJUSTABLE "WINDOV-GRATE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 7, Mig?.
Application filed June 25, 1909. Serial No. 504,218.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STEPHEN .TABLO- Novsirr, citizen ot the United States, and resident ot Bridgeport, in the county ot Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Adjustable lVindow-Grates, ot' which the following is a specilication.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in portable window grates and especially to the adjustable kind, adapted to be placed in or removed troma window opening.
It is the object of my invention to form a window grating of the above class in sections, adapted to he assembled and adjusted with respect to each other so as to readily engage and cover a window opening, as beneath a sash; to form the grating of metal, either cast or wrought, and to produce each section as of a series of bars suitably spaced apart in a way to prevent a person from passing in or out the window while the grating is in place, thus serving not only as a protection against children falling out, but against intruders from entering through the window.
Upon the accompanying two sheets of drawings forming a part ot this specification similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures and ot' which,
Figure 1, shows a front elevation of my improved adjustable grating complete, and ready to be placed in a window opening. Fig. 2, is a similar front elevation ot the several parts of my grating, in an expanded position, as for instance that occupied when arranged within a window opening, not shown. Fig. 3, is a disconnected side elevation of the two upper sections of the grating shown in the preceding figures. Fig. il, shows a similar detached side elevation ot' the two lower sections of the grating shown in Figs. 1 and Q. Fig. 5, shows a disconnected top edge view of the parts shown in Fig. Ll, and as seen from line 5 of Fig. 4l, and Fig. 6, shows a sectional plan view taken on line (3 6 of Fig. l.
Referring in detail to the characters ot' reference marked upon the drawings, A and B represent the two upper sections of the grating while C and l) represent the two lower sections. As shown each ot these sections represents a united series ot vertical and cross bars formed integral as by means of casting or welding. rlhese sections are further provided with projections, guide holes, etc. to insure their adjustable connection one with the other to engage a window casing, not shown. Each oi the sections referred to is provided with one or more extended yokes 7. rlhose of the lower sections being for the purpose of engaging the sides of the casing while those upon the top sections are for the engagement of the lower part of the sash, thereby preventing the grating from falling out, or being removed, while the parts are in their extended positions.
rlhe sections A and B are each provided with depending tongues 8-8 one upon the underside of each end to engage correspondingly vertically dispos-ed sockets 9 in the top portion of the lower sections which serve as an adjustable connection ot the upper to the lower grate sections. A pawl 10 is pivotally connected to each of the lower sections C and D and is adapted to be thrown in under the end of the outer tongues 8 of each ot the corresponding top sections to hold the same in their raised position, as shown in Fig. 2. The section D is also provided with a central socket 11 at each ot' its upper and lower` inner corners to receive the reduced portion 12 of the adjoining lower section C whereby the two said members are horizontally adjustably connected one with the other. The same is true of the two upper sections in which case the upper and lower inner corners of the section B are recessed as at 13 to receive the reduced corner portions 14; of the section A. The inner vertical part 15 ot the section C is provided with a pair of notches 16 to engage the lugs 17 fixed to the corresponding inner part 18 of the section C. In practice these lugs engage the notches and serve as a guide and lock for the same to prevent the said sections from being slipped together when the locking bar 19 is arranged in front ot it as shown in Fig. 2. The locking bar is hinged to the top section B as at 2O and is arranged vertically as shown in Fig. 2 behind the projections 21 of the section G and is further cut away as at 2Q to accommodate the lugs 17, and its lower end is detiected in and provided with a slot 23 to engage a staple 25 secured to the 'face or apron of a window frame. A lock QA may be thus applied through the staple as shown in Fig. 2, in a manner to prevent the lower sections from being slid toward each other and the central portion of the top section from being lowered thus retaining the several parts in their extended positions to be irinly secured in the Window opening as described.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is z l. A Window grating comprising` a pair of grate sections adjustztbly connected one to the other, e second pair of grate sections also slidably connected one With the other and arranged above the first said sections and udjustably connected therewith, and ineens for securing the said sections in their extended positions Within a WindenT freine.
Q. A Window7 grating comprisinge pair of gratesections adjustably connected one to `the other, n second pair of grate sections also slidably connected one With the other und arranged above the first said sections and adjustably connected therewith, a locking` bur pivotally connected to one of the upper sections to hold the saine in an extended position and adapted to be fastened to e Window freine to hold the sections Within the saine.
Signed at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairield, and State of Connecticut, this 17th dey of June, A. D., 1909.
