Attornay.
Patented Apr. 8, 19.24%.
EVA. M. ANDERSON, OF WATERLOO, IOWA.
METHOD OF MAKING DQLLS.
Application filed Gctober 12, 1921.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, Eva M. ANnnasoN, a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of lVaterloo, Blackhawk County, Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Methods of Making Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in methods of making dolls, and has as its general object the production of a doll of an in'iproved construction, by a novel method whereby the doll may be manufactured at a low cost.
Another object of the invention is to devise a method whereby a pair of socks may be used in the manufacture, one of the socks being suitably cut into a few required blanks to be associated with an uncut sock, reducing the operations to a minimum.
These objects I have accomplished by the means which are hereinafter described and claimed, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a front elevation of a doll constructed by my improved method, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section from front to back of a single sock, uncut, but folded in a certain manner, and Fig. 1- is a like section of parts of another sock after certain alterations therein to adapt it for use in association with said first-mentioned seek. an elevation of the uncut sock mentioned, and Fig. 6 is a like elevation of the other sock having portions severed and another part longitudinally split preliminary to making the same into different associated parts of the doll.
Similar numerals of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views.
It is desirable in articles of this class to construct them by the most convenient and inexpensive methods to insure economy in production, and it is also essential that the doll be so durably formed as to withstand rough handling.
I, therefore, use such a method of con- 9 struction that one of the pair of socks, such as shown at 1 in Fig. 5, is employed'wholly uncut and merely manipulated to change its appearance. The other sock, shown at 2 in said Fig. (5, is out by only three incisions i to produce other parts of the doll. By one r Fig. 0 is Serial No. 507,245.
cross cut 5 the foot and toe part of the sock 2 is severed, while another medial longitudinal cut 6 divides this severed part into like halves 3. The side edges of each blank 3 may be stitched together to supply arms 3, the hollows thereof stuffed with cotton or other flexible materialand the open end then closed by stitching; The white toe parts show as hands when separated by a winding 10.
' Tie'normally open top part of the sock 2 is out medially longitudinally by one cut of the shears, to divide it part way into two like flaps or blanks 4 as shown at 7 in Fig. 6. Each flap has its side edges and 7 end stitched together to supply legs 4, and
the parts 2 and 4: are then stufi ed with cotton or like material to form a body part and legs, as indicated in Fig. 2. The feet may be better indicated by means of the windings 9. i
The uncut sock l is manipulated by inverting its normally top open end to supply an outer roll 8 which simulates a sweater roll, the middle p rt of the sock simulating the sweater body. The heel part of the sock 1, being usually white, will then represent the dolls face when different features are depicted thereon in any desirable way. A neck is properly indicated by means of a constricting winding as shown in Fig. 1. The toe part .of the sock 1 with the footthereof is shaped by folding and bending into a cap or toque 11 which may be stitched in place and furnished with a terminal tassel. The stuffed arms 3 may then be fastened on the shoulder parts of the body 1, then the head part is stuffed with cotton, and lastly, the stuffed body part 2 of the other seek is inserted within said port 1, these parts being stitched together.
The body thus has two layers of material and the doll is very durable.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire'to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. The method of producing a doll from a pair of socks which comprises cutting 0E the toe portion of one sock andsevering this too portion medially longitudinally to pro Vide two arm blanks, slitting the normally top portion of the sock longitudinally to provide leg blanks, uniting the edges of the blanks tubularly to close their sides and lower ends, uniting the edges of the firstthe toe portion of one sock mentioned arm blanks and stufling them with a flexible material, shaping and securing the toe end of an uncut sock to provide a head and toque thereon and inverting the normally top portion of the sock to provide a sweater roll, stufiing the head part of the uncut sock and the body and legs of the cut sock with flexible material, inserting the body part of the cut sock into the unstufied body part of the uncut sock, and securing it thereto, and securing said stufied arms on the body part of the uncut sock.
2. The method of producing a doll from a pair of socks which comprises cutting 0E and then cutting this toe portion to provide arm blanks, cutting the normally top portion of the sock to provide leg blanks, uniting the edges of these blanks and stufling them, shaping and embellishing the toe end of an uncut soc to provide a head with a face thereon, stuffing the head part of the uncut sock and the body of the cut sock, and inserting the body part of the cut sock into the body part of the uncut sock and securing it thereto.
3. The method of producing a doll from two socks which comprises cutting off the toe portion of the first sock, and then cutting this toe portion to provide arm blanks, cutting the normally top portion of the first sock to provide leg blanks, uniting the edges of these blanks and stuiiing them, shaping and en'ibellishing a portion of the second sock to provide a head with a face thereon, stutting the head portion of the second sock and the body portion of the first sock, and inserting the body portion or" the first sock into the body portion of the second sock and securing it thereto.
Signed at Vaterloo, Iowa, this 13th day k of Sept. 19:21.
