BLADE-HOLDNG DEVICE.
Application led March `El, 1922.Y Serial No. 542,414.
' specification, reference being had 'thereinto the accompanying drawing. y
This invention comprises a blade holding device. In another aspectit may be considered a pocket knife, for when the blade is placed in the holder it has all the functions of a knife and is to 'be so considered. It is contemplated to provide a device of this character 'comprising two associated components, readily attached and detached from each other and each of which may be cut and stamped from a sheet of metal or any suitable material and folded along their central line to form the body of each component; wherein provision is made for holding a large variety of the safety razor and like blades now on the market and when placed in the holder means are provided for forcing the blade into position where it will be securely held in position; wherein a 0uard or shield is rovided and is' foldable on the holding element to pro-Vide a shield for the blade when the holder handle is in closed position; wherein the shield or handle may be detached from the holder element; and which will, in a word, constitute a simple and effective means for utilizing old safety razor blades which would otherwise be thrown away.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, the following views being shown:
Fig. l, is a view in side elevation of one form of the device, in open position;
Fig. 2, is a view in end elevation of the parts in the position shown in Fig. l, and viewed from the right of that figure;
Fig. 3, is a view in longitudinal section of the parts in the position shown in Fig. l;
Fig. 4, is a view in vertical section on line 4 4 of Fig. l;
Fig. 5, is a view in top plan of the parts in the position shown in Fig. l;
Fig. 6, is a view in perspective showing the parts in closed position;
Fig. 7, is a view in longitudinal section of a slightly modified form in open position; and
Fig. 8, is a view in vertical section of the same on line 8-8 of Fig-7.
rshown in Fig. l.
vln these views l' represents a holdery component formedy by bending a suitable piece of materiallalong its central vline toY form a channeled member having Vspaced apart sides and connected at its front end by a strap V2. Y A similar strap 3 at itsother y end extends'upwardly fromV the edges of the sides and rconstitutes a connection 'for the sides and va holder to limitandprevent a bladeret from riding 'up and out of the holder when'it "has been i'slipped therein as vJust beyond'this strap 3, the sides are extended upwardly andV Vthese extended portions 5 constitute a bearing for a handle and guard element 6. Portions of these Vextensions are punched inwardly toco-nstitute projections 7 which provide a pivot or fulcrum and bearing upon which the handle and guard component is swung into open and closed position.
The handle and guard component 6 comprises a piece of suitable material bent cen- Y trally to constitute spaced apart side members joined at one end by a folded over portion 8. These `constitute a guard `or shield for the blade when the parts are in the position shown in Fig. 6. For the purpose of having the sides in about the same plane when so closed, the upper edges of the sidesfof the holder are bent inwardly at their upper edges and this also insures resilient contact with the sides of a blade when inserted in the holder.
The other end of thehandle is rounded to form a bearing surface 9 and the two sides are forced together at this point so that they will bear against a blade as shown holder so that a blade may be readily inserted in the holderl and as here shown such means includes a slot 10 cut into the joined end portions of the sides, the angle being such that when the handle or guard portion is swung upwardly at an angle of about degrees to the holder, the handle maybe slipped downwardly and disconnected from the pivot points 7 uponv which it is swung.
For certain types of blades which are longer than the ordinary varieties the form shown in Fig. 7 is provided. As here shown the bearing part orrrounded portion 9 is formed with spaced apart portions of the sides 10 which permits a blade to pass back beyond the pivot points 7 as shown in Fig.
7 When this constructionl is used,'there is provided a pin or rivet 11 Which hears against the end of the blade when the handle is in openposition and'hol'ds it against slipping back out of the holder.l
From the foregoing it will be seen that" the present invention provides a simple and economical structure which meets the objects above set` forth.L While ity has been shown in the embodiment herein illustrated,
Y it will; be understood that I do not Wishto be limited tothe precise form ofvthis'dis-` closure', as many changesl are contemplated tions, in spaced-apart relationship; a meinber joining thesides at one end thereof; a member joining` the edges of the side portions at another portion thereof and con-4 stituting a restraining element for a blade when inserted in the holder; a bearing and pivot for a handle formed on another portion of `the holdercomponent; and a handle and guard component formed from a piece of material folded to constitute spaced apart sides, .pivotally and detachably associated vvithn the holder and oldable over a portion thercof'when in one position, and means for holding the blade securely inthe holder,
said means` including a bearing member on theA handle Yand adapted to bear against and force the blade into position in the holder whenl the handle'is in open position.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature. I* Y f,
LOUIS HLAVACEK.
