E. F. HARDEY MANICURING DEVICE Filed April 19, 1926 Patented Jan. 3, 1928.
EDWIN r. Hannes?, or KANsA's crrY, MissoUnIi MANVIGURING DEVICE.
Application filed April 19,l 1926. Serial No. 102,964.
My invention relates to lnanicuring devices and one object is to provide a simple and inexpensive deviceof this character embodying means for trimming, filing and 5 cleaning the finger nails. l
A further object is to provide a device in which a guard is associated with the' finger nail trimming blade to limit thel entrance of said blade into the nail and thereby elimi- U nate the danger of cutting the flesh.
A further object is to provide a device of.
this `character whichv can be safely carried in the pocket when not in use.
In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be had tothe accompanying' drawing, in which: v
Fig. 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. -2 is a longitudinal section of the device On line 2 2 of Fig. 3. i Fig. 3 is an irregular longitudinal section on line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. l is a detail plan view *of a .finger nail tool.
In carrying out the invention, I employ a -7 hollow handle 2 which is preferably formed from one piece of sheet metal and has a longitudinall slot 4L therein. The two narrow sides 6 of the handle 2 are cut away at their rear portions to form openings 8 for the pur- 30 pose of exposing the cutting edges 10 at the ends of a blade 12. 'Ihe blade 12 extends transversely of the rear portion of the handle 2 and is arranged between the upper'and lower portions lel and 16 of said handle, suitable means such asa screw 18 being employed for clamping said upper and lower portions 1aland 16, respectively, firmly against the upper and lower edges of the blade. For further security the upper edges of the blade 12 are set in corresponding recesses 15 and 17l in the upper and lower porc tions lt'and 16, respectively, ofthe handle,
as shown by Fig. 2. The blade 12 is set inwardly froml the rear and side. margins of 45 the upper and lower portions 14 and 16, respectively, so that said marginsr will'constitute a guard 2O which will prevent either of the cutting edges 10 of the blade 12 from entering the finger nail far enough to cut the flesh. 'l f l 22 designates a finger nail tool comprising a combination file and nail cleaner which is slidablymounted within the handle 2 and has a pointed forward end 24`whereby the nailsmay be readily cleaned. Said combinat-ion file and nail cleaner 22 slides in and "outthrough an opening 26 in. the forward thumb piece 2S'projecting outwardly from f the rear portion of said tool 22 through the slot-4. Y
An elongated` U-shaped spring 30 isarrangedwithin the handle 2 to clasp opposite sides of the combination file and nail cleaner i-"I 22 and thus frictionallyholdit at any point of its adjustment in the handle 2. The spring 3.0 is 'held from longitudinal movement in the handle' 2 by abutting the screw I 18 andfthefforward portion of said handle Tf? at opposite sides of the opening 26, as shownby Fig. 3. Y
' In vpractice vwhen the. nails are to be trimmed, either margin of the guard 2O is slipped beneath theynail and against the T5 flesh and thereby limits the entrance of the cutting edge of the blade 12 into the nail,
so that there will be no danger of cutting the flesh.' yWhen the combination file andnail cleaner 22 is to be employed it is withdrawn fromthe handle2 tothe desired extent by pushing `outwardly upon the thumb piece 28. l/Vhen thev combination file andi nail cleaner 22 is in use .the handle 2 forms a convenient means for holding said combination file and nail cleaner.,v When not in use, the combination file and nail cleaner 22 is pushed. backwardly into the handle V2, sec dotted lines Fig; 3, so that its point 24 will not project from the opening 26 and cut a hole while being carried in the pocket.
Y From the foregoing 'description'it-,is apparent that I have yprovided a manicuring device embodying the advantages above pointed out, and while I have shown and de- J5 scribed the preferred form and combination of parts, I reserve the right to all such changesandv modifications as properly fall within the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. y l0@ I-Iaving thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is: l. In a device of the character described, a hollow handle, an elongated U-shaped spring arranged Within said handle, and a linger nail tool slidably mounted in said handle and having two longitudinal sidesffric-` Jcionally engaged by said spring. 19 2. In a device of the Vcharacter described, a
