Description

G. W. BURR.
Adjustable Batches for Latches. [40,148,662 Patented March17.1874.

NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE W. BUBR, OF EAST LINE, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN ADJUSTABLE CATCHES FOR LATCHES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,662, dated March 17, 1874 application filed I August 9, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE W. BURR, of East Line, in the county of Saratoga and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Latch-Oatch, of which the following is a specification:
In the accompanying drawing, Fig. 1 represents a front View, Fig. 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section, of my improved latch-catch on the line 0 c, Fig. 2.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention is an improvement in the class of catches for door and gate latches, which are made vertically adjustable to accommodate the various positions the door or gate may assume in consequence of shrinkage, swellings, or other cause. The invention consists in combining a T-shaped catch with a slotted holder or guard plate, which is secured to the gatepost by screws, so that by means thereof, the catch may be clamped and held by friction at any desired point, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing, A represents the post or casing of the gate, door, or window, or other object to which the holder B is firmly attached by top and bottom screws (0. The middle part of holder B, between the ends through which the screws a pass, is raised to such a distance from post A that the base of catch 0 may slide below the same when the lower screw 00 is loosened, but is rigidly held thereon when the same is tightened. A central vertical slot, 1), of holder B, guides the projecting part of catch 0, which is placed centrally and under right angles to its base. This projecting part is recessed for locking the latch therein, and rounded off at its outer part in the usual manner, as shown in Fig. 2.
Y'Vhenever the position of the gate, door, or window has changed by the influences of the weather, shrinkage, or other cause, the catch 0 is vertically adjusted in holder B to correspond with the new position of the gate, forming thereby a very convenient attachment for the purpose.
I am aware it is not new to combine a catch and slotted guard plate or holder, and, therefore, disclaim such invention, and restrict myself to the following claim:
The T-shaped catch 0 and slotted holder B, combined and constructed relatively, as shown and described, so that the former may be clamped and held by friction between the post A and said holder, by means of the screws a, in the manner specified.
