lie it known that l, FERDINAND PAnonLLi, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mount Kisco, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Chipping Tools, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to wood working tools, and more particularly to a chipping tool somewhat in the nature of an adz.
lly object is to provide a device of this character adapted to give a much smoother and more even surface than an ada, and also adapted to work in places where it would be impossible to use an adz.
Another object is to provide a device of this character which can be conveniently manipulated with one hand.
A still further object is to provide a de vice in which the handle and cutter will be held in very rigid relation to each other, and yet can be easily separated, when desired, for grinding the cutter, whereby to make it easy to always keep the same in prime condition.
Minor objects will appear in the subjoined description.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of the parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed, reference bein@ had to the accompanying drawings, in w ich Fig. l is a side elevation of the device ready for use.

The numeral l indicates' the handle of the device; 2 the cutter; and 8, the band which binds the-handle and cutter together. rlhe handle has a forwardly projecting convex portion la provided in its upper edge with a notch 4 for engagement with the securing band 3; while the handle proper of the device is curved rearwardly and upwardly and then downwardly, and is indicated by 1b.
rlhe cutter 2 of the device has the broad portion 2a which forms the cutter proper and is provided at its inner end with a chisel edge 5.
The integre-.h forwardly projecting portion 2b of the cutter is of the same width as the thickness of the handle i, and has a shoulder 6 at its inner end, which engages a cooperating shoulder 7 on the under side of the handle l. The portion 2* is also provided on its under side with a shoulder 8 spaced forwardly of the shoulder 6 on the upper side. This shoulder 8 forms an offset of a thickness equal to the thickness of the lower end section of the securing band 3, so that when the band is in operative position on the device, as illustrated in Fig. l, said lower end of the securing band will be flush with the bottom of the inner end portion of the cutter, as indicated in Fig. l.
I will now describe a portion of my device which may be either employed or omitted, at the option of the manufacturer,
as the device will work either with or without it, as will be more fully understood when the operation of the device is described. The portion just referred to consists of a metallic plate 9, secured in any preferred way, as by screws 10, to the under side ofthe convex portion la of the handle, and projects a little in advance of said handle portion, as indicated at 9a. rl`his projecting portion 93 has a threadedopening l1, into which is received a screw l2 provided with a point 13 at its lower end, which point takes into the conical recess 14 in the forward end of the portion 2b of the cutter.
rlhe operation of the device is very simple. When it is desired to assemble the parts, the securing band 3 is first slipped over the forward-end portion la of the handle and dropped into the notch il. rlhe reduced portion 2b of the cutter is then slipped through the lower end of the band till the shoulder 8 engages the band, at which time also the shoulder 6 on the upper side of the cutter engages the cooperating shoulder 7 on the under side of the handle portion 1.a. The device is then ready for use, and the parts will have no tendency to separate from each other when in use, because the rearward pull of the handle lb as it forces the cutter to its work, always tends to force the parts into the relative positions just indicated. The portion 2b of the cutter is slightly tapered at its sides at its extreme forward end, as indicated at 15, to cause it to easily enter the opening at the lower end of the securing band 3.
When the cutter is separated from the other parts, as illustrated in Fig. 2 o the drawings, it is as easily ground as a chisel or a plane bit; and under ordinary circumstances, the parts do not need to tit so tightly together as to malte it dillicult to remove the cutter 'for sharpening: however, in cases Ywhere it becomes necessary to use the device under circumstances where the handle hecomes wet or charged with moisture, it might swell so tight thatl it would he diticult to remove the cutter. But with the adjusting plate 9 and the screw 12, it will he seen that the cutter can he made to slip easily into and out oi the securing hand 4, and yet hy a slight downward turn or two ot the screw l2 into the opening lll, the parts may he hound in very rigid engagement with each other, even though the handle should he unusually shrunken. Also it will loe seen that the screw 12 taking into the conical opening lll, will lock the cutter against movement either forwardly or rearwardly relatively to the handle l. In fact, this arrangement will permit the parts to all be lit easily together, and will yet insure them being absolutely rigid when in use.
Instead of the device being pulled to its work by the handle portion l", it may loe pushed to its worlr when desired with the palm of the operators hand on the convex forward end la of the handle.
` Having now described my invention, what l claim as new and desire to protect by laetters Patent is l. A device of the character described, comprising a cutter having an upper and a lower shoulder, with a reduced portion eX- tending forwardly trom kthe lower shoulder; a handle with a notch in its upper edge; and a securing band surrounding the handle recense with its upper end received into said notch, and with its lower end projecting below the handle suiliciently to receive the reduced portion of the cutter, said reduced portion being passed through said downwardly projecting portion ot the hand with its under shoulder in engagement with the lower end et the hand.
2. A device of the character described, comprising cutter having an upper and a lower shoulder, with a reduced portieri eX- tending 'forwardly from the lower shoulder; a handle with a notch in its upper side;
a securing hand surrounding said handle with its upper end received into notch, and having its lower end projecting below the handle, with the reduced portion ot the cutter received into said projecting portion of the securing hand; and adjustable means for placing tension on said hand to loch the handle and cutter together` 3. fr device oll the character described, comprising a cutter having an upper and a lower shoulder, with reduced portion ex tending 'orwardly 'from the lower shoulder; a handle having a convert 'forward portion provided with a notch on its upper side, and a rear portion curved upwardly and rearwardly and then downwardly to form a handle proper for manipulating the device; a securing hand surrounding the handle and reduced portion oi'the cutter, with its upper end received into said notch and its lower end in engagement with the lower shoulder of the cutter, said handle also having a shoulder on its under side for cooperative engagement with' the shoulder on the upper side oiE the cutter.
