ROSOOE O. MOlVBRAY, OF DENVER, COLORADO TERRITORY.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOOR-SECURERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. ml, dated March 17, 1874; application led February 14, 1874.
OASE B.
declare that the following is a full, clear, and
exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of I this speciiication, in which- Figurc 1 is a back view of my fastening as folded to be carried in the'pocket or other place. Fi 2 is a perspective view of the same as unfolded and Vready for application to a Fig. 3 is an end view of it in the same condition as in Fig. 2. Fig. 4 shows a horizontal section of a left-hand door and jamb, with the fastening applied between the jainb and door. Fig. 5 is a similar section ot' a right-hand door and jamb with the fastening applied to it.
My invention consists, first, in the combination, with a supporting-plate which has one of its ends bent over at right angles to its face, and notched on its edge about midway of its length, of ahinged and jointed stay-bar. This combination is suoli that the bar can be folded against the back of the supporting-plate, and also can be unfolded, and again partly folded. so as to enter the notch in the edge of the Vplate on either edge, and stand across the crack which is between the door and jamb. Uy invention consists, second, in a plate provided with a notch on each edge, in combination with the hin ged and jointed bar, whereby the fastener can be readily used on a right or left hand door-jamb.
To enable others skilled in the a-rt to understand my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A is a supporting-plate, with one of its ends bent over at right angles to its face. This bent-.over end a is cut so as to present sharp entering-points, as shown. In each edge of the plate, about midway of its length, rectangular notches b b are cut. B is a narrow rib, formed or placed in the center on the back of the plate A, at the opposite end from the entering points. This rib terminates at the notches b b. To the inner end of this rib a bar, c, equal in length to the distance between the notches and the end a, is hinged, as at g,- and to the free end of this bar another bar, d, double the length of the bar o, is connected and hinged by mea-ns of a short double-joint link, f, as shown.
In Fig. l, it will be seen that the plate A is broad enough to allow the bar d to be folded against its back. It will also be seen that the short link f allows it to be so folded that its edge will be on the outside of and parallel with the edge of the rib B and short bar c. The plate thus serves as a sort ot' protection and case to it when not in use.
To use the invention in a left-hand doorjamb, the traveler only has to unfold it, as in Fig. 3, introduce the plate between the edge of the door and the face ofthe jamb, and close the door hard enough to drive the points ot' the end a into the jamb, and then turn down the bar el across the door-crack into the rectangular notch, as shown in Fig. 4.
To use it on a right-hand door-jamb, he must turn the fastener so as to bring the points of the end a toward the jamb, and bring the bar l to the top, and proceed just the same as when using it in a left-hand door-jamb.
lhat I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
l. The combination of the jointed and hinged bars c d with the rib B and the plate A, notched on its edge, as at b, substantially as and for purpose set forth.
2. The notches b b of the plate, in combina.- tion with the hinged bars and rib, thus giving reversibility, and permitting attachment to either a right or left hand door-jalnb, substantially as described and shown.
3. The short double-joint link f between the long bar and the short bar in the construction of the fastener, as and for the purpose herein described.
