Description

March 4 1 924.
- 1,485,489 L. C. DOCKERY I I Filed Jan. 22. 1923 ATTORNEY WITNESS:
l atented Mar. 4, 1924.
UNITED stares LEWIS C. DOCKER-Y, OF CORSICAITA, TEXAS.
TON GS.
Application filed January 22, 1923.
ful Improvements in Tongs, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pipe wrenches or tongs.
An object of the present invention is the provision of a wrench of this character wherein the handles and jaw members are eccentrically connected by means of an antifriction member, whereby the jaws of the wrench may be easily and quicklymanipulated.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention further includes the following novel features and details of. construction, to be hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawingsand pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a fragmentary elevation showing a portion of a wrench constructed in accordance with the invention.
Figure 2 is a section on the line 22 of Figure 1.
Figure 3 Figure 2.
Referring in detail to the drawings, wherein like characters of reference denote corresponding parts, the reference character 10 indicates a handle which is provided at is a section on the line 3-3 of one end with a jaw 11, the said jaw being rigidly secured to the handle by any desired means.
The reference character 12 indicates the movable jaw of the wrench which is curved as shown and which is adapted to co-operate with the rigid j aw 11 so as to provide grip ping means upon diametrically opposite sides of a pipe or other cylindrical object, as will be readily understood. The inner end of the jaw 12 is bifurcated so as to provide spaced cars 13 and these ears are each provided with an eccentrically arranged opening 14.
Serial No. 614,270.
The reference character 15 indicates the other handle of the wrench, which handle is bifurcated at its inner end to provide spaced ears 16. These ears receive between them the ears 13 of the 12, while the last mentioned ears receive between them the handle 10. The handles 10 and 15 and the jaw 12 are pivotally connected by means of a pivot bolt or pin 17 which also passes through eccentrics 18' which are carried by the cars 16 v of the handle 15. The eccentrics 18 are positioned within the openings 14 and are surrounded by anti-friction rollers 19 so as to provide an eccentric anti-friction bearing between the aw 12 and the handle 15.
The jaws of the wrench are opened by moving the handle 15 in a direction away from the handle 10 and are closed or moved into gripping position by moving the handle I 15 in an opposite direction or toward the handle 10, the said movement rotating the eccentrics 18 within the openings 14- and moving the jaw 12 inward or toward the jaw 11, as will be readily understood.
The invention is susceptible of various changes in its form, proportions and minor details of construction and the right is herein reserved to make such changes as properly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having described the invention what is claimed is:
A pipe wrench comprising a pair of pivotally connected handles, a jaw rigidly secured to one of said handles, a relatively movable jaw, said movable jaw having a bifurcated inner end to receive the handle of the rigid aw, a bifurcated inner end for the other handle to receive the movable jaw and the handle of the rigid jaw, bearing members carried by the bifurcated ends of the handle to provide a bearing for the movable jaw and a pivot pin extending through the handles and movable jaw and disposed eccentric to the bearing members.
In testimony. whereof I aflix my signature.
