Another object of this invention isto provide an improved wrench of the above character that is readily adjustable to engage pipes of varying diameters so that the eniciency of the wrench is in no way impaired by the size of the pipe acted upon.
A further object of this invention is to provide improved means for retaining the gripping jaws in an advantageous position during the engagement with the pipe in order that'the operator may readily return the same to an operative position at the desired moment.
A still further object is to provide a device of the type in question that is extremely I simple'in construction and which, it is believed, may bem'anufactured at a minimum cost.
Various other objects and advantages will become apparent during thecontinuance of the following description.
The above and other objects which will become apparent, are accomplished by such means as are shown in their preferred form in the accompanying drawings, described in the following specification and then more specificially pointed out in the appended claims.

Fig. 2 is a diagrammatic View of the wrench showingthe gripping jaws in an open position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the head of the wrench, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line l4 of Fig. 1.
In the accompanying drawings my invention has-been illustrated as in its preferred embodiment and therefore it will be appreciated that the following description is only I purported to relate to such embodiment.
The numeral 10 designates the handle or shank portion ofthe wrenchwhichcarries at its forward end, a pair of diverging jaws 11. A pin 14: is carried by the shank which is adjacent the jaws 11 and projects some I distance beyond each side as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4. The purpose of the pin 1% is to pivotally support a pair of complemental jaws 15, the lower enlarged portions of'the jaws being provided with a suitable opening 16 for thereception thereof. Here it will be noted'that the opening 16 is approximately three times the size of the cliameter of the pin 1% consequently allowing the jaws 15 to be moved to various different positions. relative to the jaws 11. The free end of the jaw 21 is bifurcated, so as to form a pair of eccentric extensions the latter being so spaced apart as to extend about each side of the jaws l5 and provided with a series of cut-outs 23 for the reception of the pin 14.
When my improved wrench is operated, the parts are first arranged in a manner similar to that shown in Fig. 2. However the extensions 22 should be lifted entirely out of the way. After the pipe (not shown) has been engaged by the jaws 11 in a desired manner, the operator grasps the jaws l5 and raises the same sufficiently so that the pin 14 will enter one of the pockets of the opening 16. The extensions 22 are now grasped and brought over the pin ll until the gripping surfaces of the jaws are fast on the pipe and then moved slightly downwardly so that the pin lat will enter one of the cut-outs 23. Now, when the jaws assume this position, as illustrated in Fig. 1, a complete annulus is formed so as to embrace the pipe on all sides, each quarter of the annulus having oppositely arranged teeth so that the pipe will be securely gripped irrespective of the direction in which the shank is operated. For instance if the shank 10 were moved toward the left in Fig. l, the teeth 12 on the jaw 11 and the teeth 23 would be brought into engagement with the pipe and thus securely grip the same. However in the event that the shank were moved in an opposite direction the other teeth 13 and 22 would be in an operative position. By reason of the fact that the extensions 22 are provided with a series of cut-outs, it will be understood that the annulus may be adjusted so as to be consistent with the diameter of the pipe that is engaged.
From the foregoing it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and therefore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
In reducing my invention to practice I find that the form referred to herein as the most practical and preferred embodiment is the most efficient, but realizing that certain conditions will necessarily vary in concurrence with the adoption of my device, I desire to emphasize the fact that various minor changes in the details of construc tion and in the proportion of parts may be resorted to when required without sacrificing any of the advantages of my invention as defined in the appended claims.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a wrench of the character described,
a shank, a. pair of jaws formed at one end thereof, the gripping faces of said jaws being prov ded with oppositely arranged; teeth, a pin carried by said shank in prox-. 1 m1ty to said aws, a pair of complement-ah in proximity to said jaws, a pair of complemental jaws ha *ing openings at their lower ends to receive said pin, the gripping faces of said complemental jaws being also provided with teeth, another jaw pivotaliy connected to said compleinental jaws, the.

8. In a wrench of the character described, a shank having a pair of jaws formed at one end thereof, the gripping face ofsaid jaws being provided with oppositely ar ranged teeth, a pin carried by said shank in proximity to said jaws, a pair of complemental jaws having enlargements formed at their lower ends and openings for the re ception of said pin, a pin connecting the upper ends of said complemental gripping jaws, the gripping faces of said complemental gripping jaws being also provided with teeth, another jaw pivotally mounted on said complemental jaws, said last mentioned jaw also having teeth formed on the gripping face thereof, a pair of extensions formed on said last mentioned jaw and spaced apart to extend on both sides of said complemental gripping jaws, said extensions being provided with, a series of cut-.
outs to receive said pin, for retaining said aws in an approximately rigid position, as
