Be it known that I, ANeUs R. GRoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cowl Lights; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, andexact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
This invention is an improvement inV socalled cowl lights for automobiles and its object is to provide a very simple attractive looking light which can be readily'attached to a cowl or other part of an automobile, and which when attached can be adjusted to any desired angle relative to its support. This enables the light to be attached to curved portions of the fenders or cowl, and then adjusted so as to throw the light rays in the desired direction.
Anotherobject of the invention is to provide a removable electric lamp hold-er, which holder with the lamp can be readily placed in or removed from the casing or body of the light when it is necessary or desired to change or renew the lamp or adjust tlie electrical connections. f
I will explain the invention in detail with reference to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate one practical embodiment thereof, and set forth in the claims the essentials of the invention and the novel subordinate features of construction and combinations of parts for all of which protection is desired.

V'Ihe light shown comprises a casing or body 1, which may be of any desired size, shape and conguration, preferably made of cast metal having an approximately cylindric bore open at its outer end but closed at its inner end and, in the present instance, shown as having a reduced socket member l in its interior near its inner end for a purpose hereinafter described. Said body preferably has a pair of depending lugs l by -which it may be pivoted upon a suitable support.'v Y
`The' support is preferably such as indicated in Figs. 1 and 2, and consists of a baseplate 2 having a lug 2SL on its upper side adapted to fit between the-lugs 1b on the lower side ofthe body 1, andhaving a Vthreaded shank v2C which is adapted to extend through a suitable opening in the dash board'or cowl C, and be secured thereto by a nut and washer: of any suitableV kind, such as shown at 2e. Anopening 2t extends axially through the' shank 2c (as indicated in dotted lines Yin Fig. 3), and up through the base and lug-21 passing to one. side of the pin 2g by which the lugs 1b of the casing 1 are pivoted to .lug 2.aL of the support.
The casing 1 has a slot or opening lc in its lower side between the lugs 1b so that an insulated conductor W may be led up through the opening 2f in the ysupport and through the passage 1c into the `body as shownv and be connected to a pin 3 therevin as hereinafter explained. V l
-The casing l can be adjusted at any desired angle relative to the support 2, and locked when adjusted by means of a socketscrew-1g tapped throuofh a suitableopening in one of the lugs 1b 1n position to engage the side edge of lug 2b as indicated in Fig. l. While I 'prefer to use the support 2 as shown and described any other Suitable support may be used.
In the example shown a pin-3 preferably made of non-conducting material kis slidably fitted in the socket 1a in the casing, and is normally partially projected by means of a spring 3a in the socket. The inner yend of the conductor W may be securedV to thepin' 3 in any suitable manner, preferably by means of a screw 3, which `forms. an electric connection with the wire, see Fig. L1, the screw 3b being tapped through a threaded opening in the outer end of the plug. The pin 3'is yieldingly pressed forward by the spring 3a, and the screw v3" in this instance forms an electrical contact member adapted to engagewith an opposed contact member on the electric lamp holder withinA the cas- Y ing 1. Y j Y As shown I preferably use an electric lamp L havingA a socket kengaging' member L of standard construction. The lamp is mounted in a removable holder adapted to be readily inserted in or removed from the casing.
The holder 4 comprises a cylindrical socket member 4a, a member 4g adapted to close the open end of the casing, and a connecting member 4e. The holder 4 has two slots 4b for engagement with the lamp shank L. To one end of the member la is secured a hollow member 5 (see Fig. 3) preferably of non-conducting material, which extends through an axial opening in the end of member 4 and has a flange 5a engaging the inner end wall of member lla. The outer part of member 5 is externally threaded and engaged by nuts 5b which fasten the member 5 to the member 4f, as shown in Fig. 3. Y
In the outer end of member 5 is an axial pin 5 adapted to make electrical contact with the screw 3b to which the conductor N is attached when the light holder is inserted into the casing. The member 5 as shown has a socket in its inner end in which is slidably engaged a hollow contact piece 6 which is held normally projected by a spring 6a confined in the contact piece 6 and in the socket in the member 5, the spring making electrical contact between the pin 5n and the contact piece 6. This piece 6 normally projects in such position that when the lamp shank L is inserted into socket ta and engaged with the slots 4b the usual contact point in the lamp shank makes electric contact with the piece 6, which is yieldingly held in contact therewith by the spring 6a. Thus when the holder and lamp are in the position shown in Fig. 3 an electric circuit is established from the conductor W to and through the lamp.
The socket member 41a is connected by a. bar 4:9 with the casing closing member 4g, the members la and 4g being spaced apart suificiently to enable thelamp L to be inserted into engagement with part Ala, or removed therefrom, in the space between the members la and 4g. Part 4g has a reduced ange 4f on its inner end which is adapted to fit into the outer end of the casing or body 1 (see Figs. l and 3), part fig being preferably slightly greater in external diameter than the forward end of the casing 1. The part 4g also forms a stop to limit the inward movement of the lamp support and preferably position it in the casing. Said part 4g is preferably cylindric and a glass or jewel is secured therein as shown.
When the lamp supporting member is inserted into the casing the ange lg abuts against the outer end of the casing and the lamp is in proper position and the proper electric connections are made between the lamp and the source of electricity through wire W so that the lamp will be lighted when the current is turned on.
The lamp support may be detachably retained in the casing by any suitable means. I preferably employ a screw as shown at 7 tapped through the wall of the casing near the front end thereof and engaging the member 4J, and fastening the bulb holder securely in position.
It will be seen from the foregoing that the light is adjustable on the cowl; it can be readily connected with the battery or generator of the automobile; the removable lamp holder renders it very easy to renew or replace the lamp, or to repair any interior part or connections which may be broken, and the light is compact, simple, and attractive in appearance.
That I claim is:
l. In combination a lamp casing open at one end and closed at the other; an electrical contact connection in the closed end of the casing; a removable lamp holder adapted to be entered into the casing through said open end and wholly contained within the casing and when entered to establish electrical connection between the lamp and the said contact in the casing, said holder being bodily.

2. In a light, a casing having depending lugs; a support attachable to a cowl or fender of a vehicle or the like and having a part adapted to be entered between the lugs of the casing; a pivot transfixing said lugs and part, and a screw tapped through a lug of the casing to one side of the pivot and engaging the part of the support, whereby the casing may be set and held at any desired angle on the support.
3. In combination with a lamp casing having an internal contact near one end and open at its other end; an electric lamp holder adapted to be inserted in the casing; said holder comprising a socket member, a casing closing member spaced from the socket member to permit the insertion of a lamp therebetween, said closing member having means permitting the emission of light from the casing, substantially as described.
4. In combination with a lamp casing having an internal contact near one end and open at its other end; an electric lamp holder adapted to be inserted in the casing; said holder comprising a socket member, a cas ing closing member spaced from the socket member to permit the insertion of a lamp therebetween, said closing member having means permitting the emission of light from the casing, and an electrical contact device on the end of the socket member adapted to make contact with the lamp shank when the latter is inserted in the socket member, and also to make contact with the electrical contact member in the casing when the holder is properly inserted into the casing, substantially as described.
5. In combination with a lamp casing having an internal contact near one end and open at its other end; an electric lamp holder adapted to be inserted in the casing; said holder comprising a socket member, a casing closing member spaced from the socket member to permit the insertion of a lamp therebetween, said closing member having means permitting the emission of light from the casing an electrical contact device attached to the end of the socket mem* ber adapted to make contact with the lamp shank when the latter is inserted in the socket member and also to make contact with the contact in the casing when the holder is properly inserted into the casing; and a jewel or glass in the closing member, substantially as described.
6. In combination with a lamp casing having an internal yielding contact at one end and open at its other end; an electric lamp holder adapted to be inserted in the casing; said holder comprising a socket member, a casing closing member spaced from the socket member to permit the insertion of a lamp therebetween, saidclosing member having means permitting the emission of light from the casing, the lamp being insertable in the holder between the closing member and the socket member; and an electrical contact device on the end of the socket member adapted to make contact with the lamp shank when the latter is inserted in the socket member, and also to make contact with the electrical contact member in the casing when the holder is properly inserted into the casing, substantially as described.
7. In combination with a lamp casing having an internal yielding contact at one end and open at its other endg'a-n electric lamp holder adapted to be inserted in the casmg; said holder comprising a socketmember, a casing closing member spaced from the socket member to permit the insertion of a lamp therebetween, said closing member having means permitting the emission of light from the casing, the lamp being insertable in the socket between the closing member and the socket member; a yieldableV electrical contact device attached to the end of the socket member adapted to make contact with the lamp shank when 'the latter is inserted in the socket member and also to make contact with the yielding contact in the casing when the holder is properly inserted into the casing; and a jewel or glass in the closing member, substantially as described.
8. In a light of the character specified, a casing open at one end; a contact member mounted in the rear or closed end of the casing; a removable lamp support adapted to be inserted in or removed from the casing, said support having a socket member for engagement of a shank of an electric lamp on one end and a closure for the casing on the other end and a side opening between said member and closure to permit the insertion of a lamp; and contact devices mounted in the socket member adapted tomake electrical contact with the lamp shank when the same is inserted in said socket; and devices carried by said socket member adapted to contact the contact member in the casing when the holder is inserted therein and form an electrical connection between said contact member in the casing through the lamp.

In a cowl light of the character described, a casing` having an open end, a socket in its closed end and a yieldable contact member in said socket, a removable lamp holder having a yieldable contact member at one end and a socket for holding a light against said contact, said holder being insertable lin and Vwithdrawable from the casing through Vthe open end thereof, the lamp and the said contacts making electrical connection between the light and the source of electricity when the lamp holder is secured within the body and means at the other end of the holder for closing the open end of the casing and permitting emission of light therethrough from the casing.

In a cowl light of the character'specified, a casing having one open end, a socket in its rear end, a yieldable electrical contact'carrier yieldably mounted in said socket adapted to be connected with an electrical conductor extending into the casing, a lamp holder comprising a socket carrying a lamp and a closure for the open end of the casing, said closure having means permitting the emission of light therethrough from the casing, a yieldable contact member in the base of said holder adapted to be contacted with the lamp shank when the lamp is inserted in the holder and said contact being also adapted to contact with the yieldable contact in the casing when the holder is inserted in the casing, and means for det-achably securing the lamp holder in the casing.
12. In a lamp as set forth in claim 11, the casing having a pair of depending lugs and an opening between the lugs for the entry of an electrical conductor; and a support having a part adapted to be entered between the lugs of the casing, and a passage for the accommodation or" the electrical conductor, substantially as described.
13. In combination a lamp casing open at one end; an electrical contact connection at the other end thereof; a removable lamp holder adapted to be entered into the casing and when entered to establish electrical connection between the lamp and the said contact; said holder being bodily removable from the casing with the lamp, and a member connected with the said holder adapted to close the outer end of the casing and having means permitting the emission of light therethrough from the casing, the casing have a pair of depending lugs and an opening between the lugs for t-he entry of an electrical conductor; and a supporting member having a part adapted to be entered between the lugs of the casing, and having a passage for the entry of an electrical conductor, substantially as described.

In combination a lamp casing open at one end and closed at the other; an electrical Contact connection in the closed end of the casing; a removable lamp holder adapted to be entered into the casing and when entered to establish electrical connection between the lamp and the said contact in the casing, said holder being bodily removable from the cas ing with the lamp; and a member connected with said holder adapted to close the outer end of the casing, and a glass or jewel mounted in said member, the casing having a pair of depending lugs and an opening between the lugs for the entry of an electrical conductor; and a supporting member having a part adapted to be entered between the lugs of the casing, and a passage for the accommodation of the electrical conductor, substantially as described.

In combination with a lampy casing having an internal contact near one end and open at its other end; an electric lamp holder adapted to be inserted in the casing; said holder comprising a socket member, a casing closing member and a connection between said members, said closing member having means for permitting the emission of light therethrough from the casing, and an electrical contact device on the end of the socket member adapted to make contact with the lamp shank when the latter is inserted in the socket member, and also to make contact with the electrical contact member in the casing when the holder is properly inserted into the casing, the casing having a pair of depending lugs and an opening between the lugs for the entry of an electrical conductor; and a support having a part adapted to be entered between the lugs of the casing, and a passage for the accommodation of the electrical conductor, substantially as described.
16. In a light of the character described, a casing lia-ving an open end and a yieldable contact member at its other end, a removable lamp holder having a yieldable contact member at one endV and a socket for holding a light against said contact, said holder having means at its other end for closing the open end of the casing and permitting emission of light therethrough from the casing and 'being insertable in and withdrawable from the body with the lamp and the said contacts making electrical connection between the light and the source of electricity when the lamp carrying member is secured within the body, the casing having a pair of depending lugs and an opening between the lugs for the entry of an electrical conductor; and a support having a part adapted to be entered between the lugs of the casing, and a passage for the accommodation of the electrical conductor, substantially as described.
