@T-TIELT@ UNITED sTATns PATENT onirica JOHN F. STENDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO THE ADAMS & WESTLAKE y COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
INSTRUMENT-LAMP.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. STENDER, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Instrument-Lamps,of whichv the following is a specification, and which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The invention relates to lamps adapted for attachment to the dash-board of an automobile for illuminating instruments, such as gages, speed indicators, etc.; its object being to provide a simple and compact lamp which may be secured directly to the dashboard; and it consists of a device such as is hereinafter described and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional view of the lamp as applied to a dashboard; Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 8 is a side view of the hood for inclosing the lamp.
vThe dashboard of an automobile is shown at 10. The lamp consists of an incandescent electric bulb 11, carried by a suitable socket 12. The' socket 12 is housed within a casing 13 having a rearwardly extending shank portion 14 adapted to project through the dashboard and having its outer end externally threaded to receive a binding nut 15. The shell 13 is provided with a circumferential flange 16 adapted to fit against the inner face of the dashboard, so that when Athe nut 15 is turned up the lamp is securely held in place. A pocheU 17 projecting laterally' from the ap i "e in the dashboard accommodates a stun 18 projecting laterally from the shf ,Y "t the socket casing, and holds the sr l 'f tion.J
rlhe lamp socket presents no novel electrical features, but is adapted to .receive a line plug 19 in 'ts rearward e hood or shield inl and is in the foi-1n ci a tnbaia.. cap adapted to tit over the shell 12, and is held thereupon me of a spA .ng stud 21 housed within and progecting through the sido wall of the shell and entering a suitalS-l rt ire in the hood. it from the socket shell. A light-emitting aperture 22 is provided in the hoodl to throw a beam of light from the lamp in the desired direction.
I claim as my invention- 1. An instrument lamp comprising, in combination, a bulb socket, a casing inclosing the socket and having a rearwardly extending threaded shank adapted to enter an aperture in a support, and a circumferential iange, means for preventing the casing from turning in its support and a clamping nut engaging the threaded end of the shank.
2. An instrument lamp comprising, in combination, a bulb socket, a casing inclosing the socket and having a rearwardly eX- tending threaded shank and a circumferential tlange and a laterally projecting stud back of the flange, and a clamping nut engaging the threaded end of the shank.
3. An instrument lamp comprising, in combination, a bulb carrying socket adapted to receive an electric circuit terminal `plug in its rearward end, a casing inclosing the socket and having a backwardly-extending threaded shank' adapted to enter an aper ture in a support, and a circumferential flange, means for preventing the casing from turningin its support and a clamping nut fitting upon the threaded end of the shank.
4. An instrument lamp comprising, in combination, a bulb socket, a casing inclosing the socket and having a rearwardly extending threaded shank and a circumferential flange, a clamping nut engaging the threaded end of the shank, and a hood hav ing a light-emitting aperture sleeved upon the forward end o the casing.
