HAW- rnonxe. a citizen of the United States, residing at Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented an improvement in Lamps, of wh ch the following description. in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification. like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
This invention relates to lamps for motor cars. bicycles and other purposes and among other objects aims to provide. a simple and effective construction whereby the rays from the lamp may not only be reflected forward but also may pass back through a rear glass of red or other suitable color.
The character of the invention may be best understood by reference to the following description of an illustrative embodiment thereof shown in the accompanying drawing wherein Figure l is a vertical section through an illustrative lamp shown herein as an embodiment of the invention, and Fig. l is a vertical section taken on the broken line 3-2 of Fig. 1.
Referring to the drawing the illustrative lamp there shown comprises a casing l having a rear aperture containing a bezel 3 receiving a glass 7) which may be red or have any other appropriate color. The casing flares forwardly and has a flange 7 formed to present an external and internal thread. The front of the casing is closed by a glass 9 carried by a bezel 11 threaded externally to the flange 7.
\Vithin the casing 1 is a reflector 13 shown herein as parabolic in form and having a reversed flange 15 formed to present a thread for engagement with the internal thread of the casing flange 7. The rear of the reflector is apertured to receive a neck 17 having a collar 19 secured to said reflector. A socket sleeve 21 is provided having a sliding fit within said neck. This socket is adapted to receive a plug 33 of a usual electric lamp 25. To lock the plug in said socket the former is provided with diametrically opposed pins 27 for insertion in L-shaped slots 29. To adjust the focus the lamp may be grasped and together with the socket he slid axially of the neck. To hold the lamp in different positions of adjustment a set screw 31 is threaded through the neck 17 and adapted to engage said socket.
The electric lamp is adapted not only to have its rays reflected forward but also some of its rays may pass back through the rear glass To accomplish this the reflector is provided with a series of perforations 33 preferably arranged adjacent to said lamp.
An important feature of the invention relates to the provision of electrical connections for the lamp whereby the latter may be axially adjusted to vary its focus without interfering with said connections. To this end the casing is provided with an aperture conveniently adjacent its lower end in which is introduced a socket 35 adapted to receive a plug 37 carrying wires 39 and springpressed terminals 41. The socket has an internal flange 43 on the opposite sides of which are placed disks 45 and 17 of insulation material. These are secured to said flange by contact rivets 49. One of these rivets is electrically connected to the socket and current passes thence through the casing, reflector, neck, and socket to one of the contacts on the lamp plug. The other contact rivet is connected by a narrow ribbonlike finger 51 with the contact 53 at the rear of the lamp plug. This contact finger may conveniently be secured to the socket by the rivet to which it is connected. This contact finger preferably is of resilient material and has several important advantages. It maintains itself closely against the contact of the lamp thereby insuring the continuity of the electrical connection; it permits the axial adjustment of the lamp toiocus the same; and it tends to maintain the lock pins 27 of the lamp seated in locking engagement with their slots 29 thereby preventing the dislocation of the lamp from the vibration which lamps of this description necessarily experience. Furthermore, the contact is so narrow as to be substantially without obstruction to the rays of light which pass from the lamp back through the rear glass To support the lamp in its position of use it may be provided with a pair of bracket lugs 55 apertured to receive a bolt or other appropriate attaching means.
The lamp described is extremely strong, simple and cheap in construction and economical in operation since the single lamp serves the dual function of supplying tht front and rear light. By removing the bezel 3 and the rear glass the lamp socket is readily accessible for adjustment axially to vary the focus and produce the most etlicient lighting efl'ect. Throughout the focal adjustment of the lamp it may be maintained lighted since the resilient contact finger will closely follow the movements thereof and maintain the electrical connection therewith.
Having described one illustrative emhodiment of tlie'invention without limiting the same thereto, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. A lamp comprising a casing having directly opposed front and rear apertures. transparent closures for said apertures. a reflector interposed between said closures. an
electric lamp havin' a plug carried by said reflector, the latter aving a series of openings to permit light to pass from the lamp through said rear closure, a plug socket in said casing between said reflector and rear closure, and a contact finger projecting from said socket to said lamp plug without substantial obstruction to said openings.
2. A lamp comprising a casing having directly opposed front and rear apertures. transparent closures for said apertures. a reflector interposed between said closures having a neck, a sleeve carried by the latter adapted to receive an electric lamp plug, means to hold said sleeve in ditl'erent positions to vary the focus of said lamp. a plug socket for said casing. and a spring finger extending from said socket to said lamp plug to engage and follow the latter in its different positions of adjustment.
