[Classes 39 (ii) and 75 (iv).] In an electric battery lamp switching and focusing are both effected by turning the end cap relatively to the casing, initial movement of the cap closing the electrical circuit and further movement causing the bulb to move further away from the reflector. In the form shown in Fig. 1, pins 5 carried by resilient arms 7 secured at 8 to the interior of the casing 1 project through holes in the casing and engage with inclined slots 6 in the end cap 4, removal of the cap being permitted by depressing the pins. Alternatively, the pins may be rigidly secured to the casing, the slots terminating in outwardly pressed troughs 30, Fig. 3, which latter Figure shows a slot 6<a> with a sinuous upper edge 29. The cap is formed with a knurled periphery 28 and it may engage the battery 19 directly or through the intermediary of a cup-shaped member 26 having arms 27 to receive a spare bulb. The bulb 9 is screwed into a socket 10 which is slidable within a sleeve 11 carried by a disc 12, the socket containing an insulating member 13 carrying a contact pin 14 adapted to connect the bulb terminal 16 to the battery-terminal 18. The bulb is held in its normal position by means of a coiled spring 20 disposed between the sleeve 11 and an insulating washer 21 on the end of the socket. The terminal 18 is normally held out of engagement with the contact pin 14 by means of an insulating ring 22 slidable within the casing 1 and urged against the upper end of the battery 19 by a coiled spring 24 in engagement with the disc 12, movement of the ring 22 being limited by a flange 25 engaging the washer 21. In modifications the slots may be of zig-zag formation to produce a step-by-step movement of the cap, the pins and slots may be replaced by spring- pressed balls and aligned indentations of partspherical form, the positions of the pins or balls and the slots or indentations may be interchanged, the cap may be screwed on to the casing, and the cap may be moved into and out of engagement with a battery which is in permanent connection with the filament.
