WILLIAM E. CADMUS, 0F BERLIN, GERMANY.
ELECTRIC SPOTLIGHT.
Application filed June 28, 1922.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, lVtLLrAar E. CADMUS, a citizen of United States of America7 and resident of Berlin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Electric Spotlights, of which the following is a specification.
The principal object of this invention is to provide a new and improved construction of an electric spot light of the type commonly used as auto-mobile accessories and in which the light is detachable from the customary brackets to permit the light to be moved to any desirable part of the automobile for use as a trouble finder.
Another object is to incorporate in a single compact structure or casing, the parts forming" the lamp per se and a spring actuated reel upon which an extension electric connecting cord is wound.
For the accomplishment of these yand such further objects as will hereinafter be appa-rent to those skilled in the art to which this appertains, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement ofl parts herein specifically described and illustrated in the ,accompanying drawings, wherein is shown preferred embodiment-s of the invention, but it isto be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings forming a portion of this specification,
Fig. 1 -is av longitudinal cross section through a lamp embodying my invention.
ll`ig. 2 is a similar view of a modification, the view showing an improved or preferred construction.
As shown in Fig. 1J a reflector 'l is secured within an outer casing 2, the main body portion of which is of a substantially ellipsoidal form and merges at its rear portion into a handle or grip 14. Suitable partitions as indicated by the reference characters #la and 4b are secured to the outer casing to form a` reel chamber in which the spool d is rotatably mounted upon the rod 15. One of the vertical faces of the reel preferably the forward or front face in this embodiment is recessed to receive a torsion spool andthe other end is anchored to the Serial No. 571,512.
rod 15 in the manner common to devices of this character.
The outer' end of an extension cord G which is wound upon the spool 4 extends through a flanged coupling member 7 which is detachably secured to the hollow bracket 8, the cord passing through bracket 8 and leading to the storage battery or other source of electricity. The inner end of the extension cord 6 is secured to the spool fl andthe positive and negative wires of the cord are led through suit-able holes provided in the spool flange and are anchored to conducting rings 11 set into the front vertical face of the spool. An electric socket is sccured to the inner end of rod 15 and has mounted therein an electric bulb 3. Mea-ns for leading the current to the bulb 3 from the extension cord comprises the conducting wires 9 connecting the socket with the spring contacts '10 which engage the contact rings 11, thus completing the circuit from the cord, to the socket and lamp 3, a turn switch 12 being secured to the casing 2 and interposed in one of the wires 9.
The construction of the detachable eoupling 7 permits rot-ation of the light about a. vertical axis and in a horizontal plane, while ,the pivotal connection 13 of the bracket 8 permits rotation of the light upon a horizontal axis and in a. vertical plane, thereby providing a substantially universal motion which permits the lamp to be turned lo any desired posit-ion for reading road signs or to direct the light towards the edge or other part of the machine.y
In the improved modification shown in Fig; 2 the outer casing indicated generally by the numeral 18, preferably consists of the three interconnected sections, namely a main body or central section 19,*a, front or door section 20, and a rear or handle section 21. The front section 2() and rear seetion 21 are connected to the main or central section respectively by any suitable securing means such as a spring catch, screws, rivets or the like as indicated by the nun'ieialsy 29 and 22 respectively.
An inner casing or support 26 is mounted Within the outer casing 18 and comprises a front substantially cylindrical section having an annular depression or groove 28 forme-d therein to provide a seat. for the inner face of the lens 23, the outer face of which is engaged by an inwardly turned fla-nge 2Oa of the door section 2O to hold the lens 23 securely in position.
The cylindrical `section 2'? merges into a vertically extending Wall 27a which connects the cylindrical section 27 with a substantially trustro-conical section 30, which projects into a trustro-conical bore ot the spool upon which the connecting cord 6 is wound. One of the inner ends of ,the Wires comprising the cord 6 is fastened to a contact ring 31 which servesas a: bearing tor tie front end ot the spool ,and also conducts the'current trom the extension-cord 6 to the inner conical section 30, from Which it is led to the socket 3 by means olfy assinall connecting Wire 50.
The end oi, the other Wire ot the eXtension cord 6 is joined to a 4contact ring 32, secured to the spool. 24 `and Afrom which lthe current isled by spring contact 33 4to a connecting Wire 52, which leads tothe socket 3 and has a Isnap switch 34 interposed therein. In the modification shown in Fig. 2, therear face of the spool 24 is recessed to provide a receptacle for the spring housing 2 in which is ymounted the torsion springl 5. rlfhe springhas its onter end secured-to the spool by means ot' a screw which is also used to attach the spring' housing' to the spool While the inner end of the spring' issecured to the tube rllhe housing` 25 is preferably constructed of a pair of ineinbersBS and 39 between which the catches LlOet'or controlling` the length ot Wire unreeled are placed. Tube 35 which is rotatably mounted Within the handle section 21 has at its inner end aprojectinp; vitlange y,35a which. ybears against an inwardly turned flange 85h ot the frustroconical section 3() to prevent longitudinal inm'emcnt of the tube. The outer nud oi tube 35 has secured thereto a nnt by `means ot which the tubeinayibe rot-atedto adjust the tension o'lt the spring' 5, suitable catches beine` provided to prevent accidental rotation oli-the nut and tube. .A rod 36 is threaded into nut .37 yand extends the tube, being` connected at its iront yend to the socket 3 While its rear Aend is provided with a ltnnrled head tor turning the screw 16 and adjustingthe socket and lamp relatively to theretlector to regnlate'the toons ot the light rays. AY mirror 17 is located on the holderin the commonly known Way. This serves by rei'lection to show the driver the road behind.
A detachable .coupling such asshown in Fig. l is also used -With thermodilication shown riirFigxa2, so thativhen it is `desired to. use the light as a trouble finder the-conplingv may :be ydetached and the light moved to the desired place,.the extension cord pulling. ont and ,univindingthe reel and ythe spool 4 by means ol the spring` 5 taking,` up the slack of cord automatically as the light is replaced upon its bracket.
,It will be Vnoted that the .trustro-conical sectionlBO shown in Fig. 2 serves-asa support for the reiiector l and also as a bearing, for the liront parto'l the spool il, while the -rear part oiI the spool is journalled upon the tube 35.
Having thus described iny invention,
vwhat l claim as .new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. An electric spot light comprising` an outer casing,y and an inner casing enclosed by and secured Within said outer casing, said inner casing consisting` ott a iliront portion anda rear portion, said front portion extending` in juxtaposed parallel alignment With the outer casing' to form a reinilorced front housing, a reflector, lamp and lens mounted Within said tionthousing., the rear portion of said inner casing being` spaced from said outer casing` .and formingl with said outer easing' a rear housing'. means tor (iletachably securing said spot light to an automobile, a spring' actuated reel iotatably supported by saidrear portion and `enclosed Within said rear housing'. said reel provided With a pair olI contact rings, electrical connecting means between said rings and -lainp,and a flexible extension cord coiled upon said reel having,` one ot its ends eitendingr through said outer casing` to a source of electricity and its other end securedwithin said casing` in circuit With said lamp whereby said spot light may be reinovedas annit Without disconnection trom for 4detachablysecuring said spot light to an automobile, a handle grip secured to said `outer casing, a tube Within said handle grip,
