The igniter makes contact in a similar manner with the shell of the socket B and the head of the screw 20, as will be understood from the construction which will now be described.
The igniter D preferably comprises a metallic cup 25 having its base portion 26 fitted with an externally threaded tubular shank 27 adapted to screw into the socket B insulating material 28 filling the tubular shank 27 and partially filling the cup 25; a central post or. conductor 29 whose lower end projects below the shank 27 and afiords a central terminal adapted to contact with the head of the screw 20; an out-er post 30 rising from the base portion of the cup 25 with which it is in electric contact; a resistance coil 31 of convolute form, having its inner end attached to the central post 29 and having its outer end attached to the post 30; a perforate disk 32 of mica, or the like, disposed above the resistance coil; and a washer or retainer ring 33 serving to hold the mica disk in place.
It is preferred to provide the upper or outer portion of the post 29 with a bore in which the inner end of the resistance coil 31 is inserted and secured by a wedging pin 34. Likewise, the stud or post 30 is provided with a bore into which the outer end of the resistance coil is extended and secured by a wedging pin 35. The insulating material 28 may be introduced while in plastic form, and it is preferred to set in said plastic material radially disposed mica strips 36 whose upper edges project somewhat above the outer surface of the material 28 and serve to support the convolutions of the resistance coil. It will be noted that a small air-space 37 is thus provided below the resistance coil, so that it will be unnecessary to heat the material 28 when the device is being used for cigar lighting purposes.
The contact member 6 is adapted to be pressed inwardly against the contact member 15 to light the lamp by means of a push button 38; and the contact member 7 is adapted to be pushed inwardly into contact withthe contact member 22 by means of a push-button 39. These buttons project through lateral openings 38" and 39 in the handle. It is preferred to partially encircle the handle with a combination name-plate and button-retaining-plat-e 40, which may be secured, as by screws 41. The button 39 is adapted to be pressed inwardly so that the circuit for the cigar-lighter will remain closed only so long as the button is held pressed inwardly. The button 38 is adapted to be pressed inwardly and shifted, so that the contact member 6 can be locked in contact with the contact member 15, thus keeping the lamp lighted as long as desired. To this end, the ferrule or curved plate 40 is provided with a T-slot 42; and the outer portion of the button 38 is provided with a circumferential slot 38 adapted to move in the restricted portion of the opening when the button is shifted, thereby to lock the button in its inwardly pressed position. It will be understood that the members 6 and 7 are resilient, so that they will force the buttons outwardly when free to doso. As clearly appears from Fig. 3, the buttons are angularly disposed with relation to each other, but are located in substantially the same transverse plane to facilitate manipulation.

represents a mounting equipped with a single socket 13' which corresponds with the socket 13 shown in Fig. 6. The socket B is adapted to receive either the igniter B or the lamp-bulb G, as may be desired. it will be noted that this construction is like the construction-already described, except that the socket B is dispensed with, and the fork or contact member 7 is dispensed with.
It will be noted from Fig. 2 that the conductors 3 and 4 are connected with the extremities of the bars5 and 6, and that the bars 5 and 6 are separated from each other by insulation strips 43. The shank of the member 7 is in electrical contact with the shank of the member 6. It will be understood that the member 5 serves with either the fork'6 or the fork 7 to establish a circuit, depending upon whether the electric light or the igniter is being used.
It may be added that the conductors 3 and 4 may be inserted wholly through the handle before being connected with the members 5 and 6, after which the mounting may be drawn to its proper place in the handle. The handle is fitted with a reflector 44 which has a tubular shank 45 fitted on the front end of the handle and removably secured by means of screws 46.
From the foregoing description, it will be understood that the improved construction is simple and capable of ready manipulation, either as an exploring lamp or as a cigar lighter.
The foregoing detailed description has been given for clearness of understanding only, and no undue limitation should be understood therefrom, but the appended claims should be construed as broadly as permissible in view of the prior art.
WVhat I regard as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow handle-piece of a lamp-socket at one end thereof, a lateral socket disposed near the lamp-socket, a mounting for said sockets within the handle,
circuit-closers corresponding with the two sockets and laterally projecting actuating devices for said closers. I
2. In a device of the character set forth,
the combination of a hollow handle-piece, a lamp-socket disposed axially thereof at one end of the handle, a lateral socket, a mounting in the handle carrying said socketsand affording a conductor, central terminals i'n sulatingly members, spring contact members insulatingly carried by said mounting,'and later,- ally projecting actuating buttons for said cont-act members.
3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with a hollow handle-piece of a lamp-socket at one end thereof, a lateral socket disposed near the lamp-socket, a mounting for said sockets within the handle, circuit-closers corresponding with the two sockets, a laterally projecting push-button adapted to close the clrcuit corresponding with the socket, a laterally projecting pushbutton adapted to actuate the circuit-closer corresponding with the lamp socket, and means for securing said last-named pushbutton in the circuit-closing position.
4. In a device of the character set forth,-
the combination of a hollow-handle, a bar therein constituting a mounting and equipped at one end with a lamp-socket disposed axially of the handle and equipped laterally with a socket projecting laterally through the handle, central terminals insulatingly mounted in said sockets and equipped with in the handle with contact members, circuit-closers insulatingly carried by said mounting, and push-buttons projecting laterally through the handle and adapted to press either one of said circuit-closers to the circuit-closing position.
5. A device of the character described comprising a hollow handle, a metallic bar therein constituting a mounting, a lampsocket carried by one end of said bar and disposed axially of the handle at one end thereof, a laterally extending socket carried by said bar, central terminals insulatingly mounted in said sockets and equipped within the handle with contact members, spring arms insulatingly mounted on said bar and serving as circuit-closers, and later ally projecting, push-buttons "adapted to move the circuit-closers to the circuit-closing position.
6. A device of the character set forth com prising a hollow handle, a metal bar therein constituting a mounting, said-bar having a laterally turned extremity, a lamp-socket mounted on said laterally turned extremity and in electrical contact therewith, a socket mounted on one side of said bar and in electrical cont-act therewith, central terminals in said sockets equipped within the handle back mounted within the sockets and provided within the handle with contactof said sockets with contact members, spring.

A device of the character set forth comprising a tubular handle, a mounting there in equipped at one end with an axially dis-. posed lamp-socket and equipped adjacent thereto with a laterally extending socket, central terminals insulatingly mounted in saidisockets and equipped back of the sockets with contact members, circuit-closers insulatingly carried by said mounting, means for actuating the'circuit-clos-ers, and electrical conductors extending through the rear portion of the handle and connected,

A device of the character set forth comprising a tubular handle, an axially disposed lamp-socket at one end thereof, a laterally extendingsocket adjacent thereto, a mounting within the handle, terminals insulatingly mounted in said sockets circuit-closers coacting with said contact members, a retainer-plate embracing the handle and equipped with perforations for push-buttons, one of said perforations havof the corresponding opening, for the purpose set forth.
10. In a device of the'cha-racter' set forth,;
the combination of a hollow handle-piece, a mounting therein having a fork equipped with a tubular'socket and having another fork serving as a contact-maker, a central and equippedv back of the sockets with contact members,
terminal insulatingly mounted in said socket and equipped back of the base of the socket with a contact member, and a push-button projecting laterally from the handle and adapted to move said first-named contactmember against said second-named contactmember.
