Description

J. BERG. IGNITION DEVICE. APPLICATION FILED MAY 26, 1913.
1,094,051. Patented pr.21,-1914 JOHN BERG, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS,
ASSIGNOR. TO METAL SPECIALTIES MANUFAC- TURING COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Original application filed September 18, 1912, Serial No. 720,963.
IGNITION DEVICE.
Patented Apr. 21, 1914. Divided and this application filed May 26, 1913. Serial No. 769,933.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN BERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ignition Devices, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates particularly to electric ignition devices capable of being used for lighting cigars, or for analogous purposes.
The present application constitutes a division of my application Serial No. 720,963, filed September 18, 1912.
The primary object of the invention is to provide an improved ignition-device which can be constructed cheaply, which is durable in use, and which will perform its function without the use of an excessive amount of current.
The invention is illustrated in its preferred embodiment in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 represents a side elevational View of the improved ignition-device and a mounting, or socket-structure, which can be used in connection with the ignition-device; Fig. 2, an enlarged face view of the ignition-device; Fig. 3, a section taken as indicated at line 3 of Fig. 2; and Fig. 1, a section taken as indicated at line 4 of Fig. 2.
represents the mounting or socket structure, for the ignition-device; and B, the improved ignition-device The mounting comprises an arm 1 carrying a socket 2; and a spring arm 3 insulatingly secured at 4 to the arm 1, the spring arm 3 serving as a contact member which co-acts with a contact member 5 which is secured to an insulatingly mounted central terminal 6 with which the socket 2 is provided. The terminal 6 is in the form of a screw, whose head is disposed within the bottom of the socket 2 in such position as to make contact with the central terminal of the burner B. The socket 2 is of metal and is in electrical connection with the arm 1.
The mounting A is designed to be contained in a hollow handle; and the rear ends of the arms 1 and 3 are adapted to be connected with electrical conductors (not shown).
The device B preferably comprises a metallic cup 7 having its base-portion 7 fitted with an externally-threaded tubular shank 7 adapted to screw into the socket 2; insulating material 8 filling the tubular shank 7" and partially filling the cup 7; a central post or conductor 9 whose lower end projects slightly below the shank 7 and affords a central terminal adapted to contact with the central terminal 6 of the socket 2; an outer post 10 rising from the base-portion of the cup 7, with which it is in electrical connection; a resistance coil 11 of convolute form having its inner end attached to the central post and having its outer end attached to the post 10; a perforate disk 12, of mica, or the like, disposed above the resistance coil; and a washer or retainer-ring 18 serving to hold the mica-disk in place.
The post9 is struck laterally or kinked at an intermediate point, as indicated at 9, and said post is embedded in the insulating material 8, which is usually introduced while in plastic form, becoming set after such introduction. Thus, the post 9 is securely embedded in the insulating material. The post 10 is fixed in the bottom 7 of the cup, and is also embedded in the insulating material. The upper ends of the posts project slightly above the insulating material, and the posts are provided with bores 01' sockets adapted to receive the downwardly or inwardly turned extremities of the resistance coil 11. The ends of the coil are secured in the sockets in the posts by means of the wedging pins 14 and 15. Before the insulatingmaterial 8 becomes hard, it is preferred to embed therein radially-disposed mica strips 16 whose upper edges projcct somewhat above the outer surface of the material 8 and serve to support the convolutions of the resistance coil. It will be noted that a small air-space 17 is thus provided below the resistance coil so that it will be unnecessary to heat the material 8 when the device is being used for cigar-lighting purposes. The mica strips, while very thin, are sufficiently tenacious to avoid chipping. On the other hand, the light resistance coil, which is usually rather fragile, is well supported and is closely confined between the edges of the radial strips 16 and the superposed mica disk 12. The mica disk is provided, in the usual manner, with perforations 18.
It will be noted that when the device B i is connected with the manent electrical connection with the botsocket 2, the metal tom of said cup, 'a resistance coil having its shank 7 b of the cup contacts with the metal tion, thin insulating strips embedded in said composition and projecting above the surface thereof, and a resistance coil having its inner end secured to said post and having its outer end electrically connected with said cu l p JOHN BERG.
