SMOKERS 'IGNITING DEVICE.

This invention relates to smokers articles and more particularly to an electrical device for igniting cigars, cigarettes, or pipes without the use of matches. 6 One ob'ect of this invention is to provide a smokers electric igniting device of the above nature which may be plugged into any ordinary electric lamp socket or electric appliance outlet.
A further object is to provide a smokers igniting device of the above nature which will be simple and compact in construction,

The'intermediate portion 11 is provided with a helical hub 14 at its lower end to fit the threads of a screw shell 15 adapted to fit over the body member 10, the

The body member 10 is enlarged at its upper portion to form a.flange 16 u on which a cover'ring 17 is adapted to lit, said ring comprising a depending skirt 18 and a flat top section 18, said skirt 18 having a plurality of depressions 19 adapted to seat within registering recesses 20 1n the flange 16.
The top of the body member 10 is flat and is provided with a spiral groove 21, said groove bein of rectangular cross-section and communicating at its inner end with an enlarged circular recess 22. The recess 22 leads to a vertical passage 23 passing en'- tirely through the body 10, said passage 23 servln to. fit about a central terminal pin 24. T e pin 24 has a slotted head 25 at its upper end, and is threaded at its lower end 26 to receive a' nut 27 which serves as the .center cont-act of the plug.
In order to provide the device with an incandescent surface for igniting cigars, c1garettes, or pipes, a coil of resistance wire 28 is-fitted within thespiral groove 21, said resistance wire being covered by a perforated mica disc 29 held in place by the ring 17 previously described. The heat from the incandescent resistance wire is partly radiated through the perforationsin the mica disc and partly passes by conduction through the mica itself, so that a cigar, cigarette, or pipe placed in contact with the mica disc will be readily ignited.
p In order to connect the inner end of the spiral resistance coil 28 to the central terminal pin 24:, an improved type of connecting member 30 is employed, saidconnecting member being constructed from a short metal strip having an aperture 31 at one end to fit around the pin '24:, and having its other end bent upon itself to clamp the in-. nor extremity of the resistance coil 28 placed In order to electrically connect the resist ance coil 28 to the outer screw shell 15, the outer extremity of the coil 28 is wound about one side 33 of an elongated loop 32 disposed at right angles to the straight portion of an outer depending terminal wire 34. The wire 34 extends vertically downward through an aperture 35 in the flange 16, and is then bent inwardly at 36 and then downwardly at 36*, where it fits in a groove 35 formed in the side of the intermediate section 14. The lower extremity 37 of the wire 34 is bent inwardly at right angles around the shoulde next'to the conical section 12. I
' By means of the above construction, when the screw shell 15. is engaged upon the body 10, it will contact with the lower extremity 37 of the terminal wire 34 and form a tight electrical connection therewith.
In the device shown in Fig. 7 the smokers igniting unit is shown installed in a special form of holder 37 adapted to rest in vertical position upon a table or other support. The holder 37 includes a metal socket member 38 which is connected at its base to an insulating body member 39. The socket.

'The stationary contact member 54 passes upwardly through the base of the socket shell38 and is bent at right angles and seeuredto said base by a screw 57.
The other wire 46 passes up through the tube 43 and is connected by a binding screw 58 to a horizontal metal connecting strip 59,
said strip being secured atits inner end, by
a nut 60, to a central connecting pin 61, said pin having a head 62 adapted to engage with the center contact 27 of the lighting unit.
In operation, when the button 55 is pressed, the circuit will be closed temporarily, causing the spiral coil to be quickly heated to incandescence, said heat being continued as long as the pressure on the but- 'ton 55 is maintained.
When through using the device, the
smoker will release the button 55, wherethe heating unit will be maintained with its 'heating surface substantially Vertical.
In the modified form of device shown in Fig. 10 the holder shown is adapted, when not in use, to rest in a horizontal position upon a table, said holder comprising a socket portion 66 and a handle 67 joined thereto in any suitable manner.
One advantage of this invention is that the ignition unit may be easily and quickly screwed into any standard electric light socket or appliance outlet, such as are commonly foundfin houses and buildings.
While the invention is especially a'da ted for use upon desks, smoker stands, tables, and the like, it may also be employed upon automobiles, or in any other location desired.
While there'have been disclosed in this specification several forms in which the invention may be embodied, it is to be understood that these forms are show for the purpose of illustration only, an that the invention is not to be limited to the specific disclosures but may be modified and embodied in various other forms without departing from its spirit. In short, the invention includes all the modifications and embodiments coming within the scope of the following claims.
Having-thus fully; described the invention, what is claimed as new, and for which it is desired to secure Letters Patent, is:

In a smokers electric igniting device, a body member of i sulating material, a screw shell on said bo y member adapted to engage with the screw shell of an electric light socket, and interior terminal member passing through said body member and insulated from said screw shell, a heating coil of resistance wire seated in a groove in the top of said body member, one end of said coil being electrically connected to said screw shell, and-means for electrically connecting the other end of said coil to the inand having its other end clamped around the end of the coil tohold it firmly in position.-
2. In a smokers electrici'gniting'device, a base member having a socket adapted to be connected to a source of electric current, said socket having center and shell contacts, a heating unit adapted to be plugged into said s0cket,xa switch in said base for closing thec'ircuit through said unit, said unit comprising a central solid substantially cylindrical insulating body, a metal terminal 'member passing downwardly through said body andhaving a center contact at its lower end for engaging with the center contact of the socket an electric heating unit located on the 15 top of said unit and connected with said terminal. member, and means for connecting the outer end of the heating coil to the shell contact of said .spcket. i
