Beit known that I, BENJAMIN BHOFFMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Incandescent-Electric-Lamp Fixtures, of which the following is a speciication. Y
The object of my inventionv is to provide a Xture for incandescent electric lamps supplied with current from a battery. In carrying my invention into effect I preferably employ-a portable fixture, in the hollow base of which I place a small storage battery for supplying current. I provide the hollow base with a cover which may be hinged to the base, and upon this cover is mounted a tubular ornamental stem or arm which carries the lampsooket'and the circuit controller and terminals.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichn Figure l is a view illustratingV the base of the fixture in section to show the position of the storage battery,the lamp-armbein g shown in elevation and the cover for the base being partly broken away to show the circuit-terminals. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section of the cover and the lamp-,arm on an enlarged scale, and Fig. 3 is a detail of the lampsocket.
Referring to the drawings, A is the hollow base of the fixture containing the storage battery B.
C is a cover hinged to the base A at C and provided with a catch or lock C2. A metal tube or arm D, having a shell d, is mounted upon the cover O. This shell, as will be seen in Fig. 2, is seated upon a ring c, resting upon the upper side of the cover C, and within the cover is a disk c', provided with a central screw-threaded hole which is adapted to be screwed onto the screw-threaded end of the tube D and by means of which the tube D is rigidly held to the cover. The ring c may be dispensed with, if desired, in whichcase the shell d will be seated directly upon the cover. The tube D carries one of the circuit-terminals F, which isa piece of spring metal and is clamped between an insulating-washerf and a nut f', which is screwed onto the screwcuit to the lamp.
The shoulder f3 and the nut f serve to rigidly secure the rod f2 in position within the tube D and to make intimate mechanical contact between the terminal F and said rod, and the insulating-washersfandf4 serve to insulate the terminal F and the rod f2 from the tube D. The other circuit-terminal G is clamped between the cover O and the disk c,whereby it is brought into close mechanical and electrical contact with the disk, so that said disk and the tube D will form one side of the cir- The contacts F and G,when the cover O is closed, make contact with the terminals F and G of the battery, thus avoiding wire connections. The lamp E is screwed within a socket e, having a ytongue e', provided with a hooked end or iinger e2, which registers with the screw-threaded terminal on the base of the lamp and serves to hold the same in place and to make electrical contact therewith. This socket, as 'will be seen in Fig. 2, is a piece of tubing provided with a shell h, saidrsocket and shell being rigidly secured to a piece of tubing h', the lower end of which is screw-threaded and adapted to screw into the upper end of the tube D. Within the socket e and tube h is a long screw t', which passes through two disks t" of insulation. These disks bear against shoulders 712, so that when the nut on the screw 'i is tightened the screw is iirmly held in place and is insulated from the socket e and the tube h. The head of the screw t is in such position within the socket e as to form the circuit-terminal, with which the contact c3 of the lamp makes contact. The lower end of the screw t' extends within the tube D, so that a springiinger 7c may make contact therewith to close the circuit to the lamp. This vspring-finger is mounted upon the rod f2 and is moved into contact with the screw t' by a key or screw K when screwed into the tube D.v The springfinger lo is provided with a piece of insulation 7o to insulate it from the screw K.
`L is a reflector carried by a spring-clip having two arms Z, adapted to surround the up- IOO per edge of the shell h, so as to hold the reieetor in position.
What I claim isl. The combination with an electric-lamp fixture having a hollow base, of a battery within the base, a c'ovcr for said base upon which is mounted the lamp-supporting stem 0r arm and which stem or arm forms one side of the lamp-circuit, two insulated metal rods within said stem, one for making contact with one of the lamp-terminals and the other for making contact with one ot' the battery-terminals, and a circuit-controller for making contact between said rods, substantially as set forth.
The combination of an elcctric-lam'l) fixture having a hollow base, a battery within the buse having two contact-terminals, a cover for said base having a tubular lamp-supporting stem or arm mounted thereon and forming one side of the lamp-circuit, a springlnetal contact carried by said cover adapted to make Contact with one terminal of the hattery, a conductor within said lampstem but insulated therefrom and having a springnietal contact on the exterior of the stem adapted to make contact with the other terminal of the battery, and a socket for the lamp mechanically and electrically connected with the stem and with which one terminal of the lamp makes contact, and an insulated contact within the socket with which the other terminal of the lamp makes Contact, substantially as set forth.
3. The combination with au electric-lamp fixture, of a tubular lamp-supporting stem or arm7 one end of said tube constituting a lampsocket and having a bent blade or linger for engaging a collar on the lamp to hold the lamp in place, an insulated metal rod within one end ot' the tube and projecting into the socket and with which one of the lamp-terminals is adapted to make contact, an insulated metal rod within the other end of said tube adapted to make contact with a circuitterm inal, a spring eontactanakcr carried by one of said rods, and a key for controlling said contact-maker, substantiallyas set forth.
i. The combination with an electric-lamp iixture, of a tubular lamp-supporting stem or arm made in two parts and adapted to be screwed together, one part constituting a lamp-socket having means for engaging a collar on the lamp to hold the lamp in pla-ce, and an insulated rod with which one of the lampterminals is adapted to make contact, and which rod extends into the second section of the stem; an insulated metal rod in said section ofthe stem adapted to make contact with a circuit-terminal, a spring contactanaker carried by said rod adapted to make Contact with the rod in the socket portion of the stem, and a key for controlling said contact-maker, substantially as set forth.
5. The combination with an electric-lamp fixture, of a tubular lamp-supporting stem or arm, one end of said tube constituting a lampsoeket and having means for engaging a collar on the lamp to hold the lamp in place, au insulated metal rod within one end of the tube and projecting into the socket and with which one of the lamp-terminals is adapted to make contaet,an insulated metal rod within the other end ot' said tube adapted to make Contact with a circuitterminal, a spring contact-maker carried by one of said rods, a key for controlling said contact-maker, and a retlector carried by two arms adapted to Surround the lamp-stem and hold the reflector in position, substantially as set forth.
