CLASP.
Application filed June 21,1923. Serial No. 646,910.
T (ZZZ coho 222 711? may concern.
lie it known that I, Gnonsn D. Hannrson, a citizen of the United Stat-es, residing at Nor h Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and State of lviassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Clasps, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in clasps and while designed more especially for use with the wrist encircling bands of wrist watches, nevertheless is of general use and applicability and is susceptible of use in all instances where clasps or spring catches are employed.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a clasp which can be easily and quickly operated to apply and release same, and which at the same time is effective against accidental movement to released position.
A further object of the invention is to provide a clasp of this character which is of simple and economical construction and which is reliable in action.
still further object of the invention is to provide a clasp which embodies a minimum of parts that are compactly related.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a plan view of a pair of 30 clasps constructed in accordance with the present invention, applied to a wrist watch and band, the latter parts shown in dotted lines:
Figure 2 is a section on line 22 of Figure 1, and
Figure 3 is an elevation on line 3-3 of Figure 1.
In proceeding in accordance with the pres ent invention, the clasp includes a base or body comprising a loop 2 at its rear to receive the wrist band B, and a hook-like member 3 disposed at the front, the member 3 having side arms 4 which diverge outwardly. The body is formed with perforated bearings 5 at the points of juncture of loop 2 and the inner ends of the arms 4. The hook-like members 3 engage through the usual loops L carried by opposite sides of the wrist watch WV. A guard is provided which consists of a substantially hell-crank shaped member having its lower arm 6 of loop form and engaged with the nose or cross-bar of the hook-like member 3. The guard is formed with perforated bearings 7 through which and the bearings 5, a pin 8 is projected. The other arm 9 of the guard forms a finger grip to permit oi o eration of the guard in releasing the clasp, A coil spring 10 is mounted on the pin 8 and serves to tension the guard, normally holding the in the position shown in the drawings.
in operation. to apply the clasp it is merely necessary to move the arm 6 of the guard downwardly against the loop L and with the nose or cross-barofthe hook 3 in-registry with the loop interior, whereby the arm 6 will move upwardly, and will pass the loop L until the latter occupies the position depicted in the drawings, whereupon the spring 10 will restore the guard into engagement with hook 3. the latter is moved, by engaging its arm 9, to eiiect upward movement of the arm 6, so as to enable the hook 3 to be moved up out of engagement with the loop L. By referring to Figure 2 of the drawings, it will be se n that unintentional movement of the loop toward the arm 9, will, due to the inclination of the arm 9, cause the loop L to move toward the pivotal point of the guard, which will aii'ord insuiiioient leverage to effect accidental operation of the guard to release the latter.
The chain 11 is employed. to connect the,
clasps and to add to the ornamental efiect in wristwatch-use of the invention.
The arms 4 of the hook 3 are disposed on opposite sides of the finger operating arm 9 of the guard so as to protect arm 9.
It will further be seen that all of the parts are of open or hook formation, enabling the use of wire or rod stock in manufacture, affording not only a light structure, but an ornamental effect as well.
Having thusdescribed my invention, What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. In a clasp. a body having a loop on one end and a hook having an elongated crossbar on its opposite end, and having divergent side supporting arms, bearings between the inner ends of the arms and the loop, a pin extending through'the bearings, and a spring tensioned bell-crank guard journaled on the pin and having loop-like arms, one of which arms is engaged with the cross bar of the hook and theother arm of which forms a finger engaging part, both of the bellcrank arms being di: nosed between the arms of. the hook.
To release the guard,
2. A clasp including a body having a hook of loop formation at one end, and a spring tensioned guard pivoted to the body and having a pair of loop-like arms one of which normally engages against the crossbar of the hook and the other of which forms a finger engaging part and extends at an angle to the first named arm, the sides of the hook being spaced and receiving each of the loop-like arms of the guard in the space therebetween.
3. In a clasp, a body having a loop-like hook at one end formed with an elongated nose, a bearing adjacent the inner ends of each of the sides of the hook, a bell-crank guard having each of its arms alined with the space between the sides of the hook, one of the guard arms engaging the nose of the hook, a pair of spaced bearings on the guard at the points of unctlii'e of the arms thereof, a pin passed through all of the specified bearings, and a coil spring on the pin disposed in the space between the bearings of the guard to tension the latter.
4:. A clasp for wrist watches having elongated loops, including a body having a hook of loop form the latter having an elongated nose and spaced sides, the nose being movable through the watch loop and the sides being engageable between and with the loop ends, and a tensioned guard carried by the body and having an elongated nose for engagement'on the hook nose.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribin witnesses.
