Be it known that JOSEPH F. GAYnsiiI, a citizen of the United States, residing at Shamokin, in the county of Northumberland and State of Pennsylvania, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Miners Caps, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to miners caps and its object is to provide means foi` relieving the head of the wearer from the effects of heat and weight so that the weight of the cap instead of being borne by the forehead of the wearer is supported at a distance therefrom and thus the head of the wearer is shielded from getting damp while at work and therefore will not cause miners headaches and in any manner irritate the.

The invention will be best understood from a consideration of the` following detailed description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings forming part of this specificationv with the understanding, however, that the invention is not confined to any strict conformity with the showing in the drawings but may be changed and modified so long as such changes and modifications mark no material departure from the salient features of the invention as expressed in the appended claims.

In the drawings:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of a miners cap embodying the invention;

Figure 2 is a longitudinal section thereof; and

Figure 3 is a top plan view with parts broken away.

1 indicates a miners cap having the usual sweat band 2 and a visor 3 connected to the sides of the cap at the end portions as indicated at 4, by stitching or in any other suit* able manner. The visor is cut away as indicated at 5 to provide a space between the forward portion and the visor for a purpose to be subsequently described. A shield mem.- ber 6 of semi-circular form has the straight edge thereof secured to the visor along the margin of the opening 5 and the curved edge thereof sewed or otherwise secured to the front of the cap as indicated at 7 for the purpose of shielding the front of the cap and the miners head from the effects of the heat of the lamp carried on the cap. lateral extension 9 secured to the visor as indicated at 10 `and a rearwardly and laterally extending portion 11 secured to the top of the cap as indicated at 12, the said bracket being adapted for supporting the usual miners lamp which is not shown.

By providing the cut away portion of the visor and the shield connecting the edge of this portion with the cap as clearly indicated in the drawing, the heat from the lamp carried on the bracket- 8 will be prevented from affecting the miners head by transmission through the front portion of the cap by reason of the intervening space between the front of the cap and the shield 6 and the opening 5 providing for the circulation of air between the shield and the cap. By having the shield of semi-circular form as indicated in Figure 1, the visor is effectively braced and held in fixed position relative to the front of the cap in a clearly obvious manner.

By the use of this cap, the miners head will be protected from the heat of the lamp which ordinarily causes the miners forehead to perspire, wetting the forward portion of the cap and frequently causing headache.

That is claimed is:

1. A miners cap including a cap portion, a visor carried thereby having the portion at the front of the cap spaced from said'cap portion, a lamp bracket mounted on the visor at the front of the cap and secured to the top of said cap portion, and a protecting shield secured to said visor at the front of said cap portion between said cap portion and the lamp bracket.

2. A miners cap including a cap portion, a visor secured to said cap portion at the sides thereof and cut away at the forward portions of the cap to provide a space between the visor and the cap portion, a semicircular shield secured at the bottom edge to said visor and along the upper edge to said cap portion, the major portion of the shield being spaced from the front of the cap portion, and a lamp carrying bracket secured to the visor and the cap portion in front of said shield, whereby the shield prevents the heat from the lamp carried by the brackety from being transmitted to the forward portion of the cap portion.
