DOOR LATCH.
Application filed January 23, 1923,
T0 all 'whom t may concern.'
Be itknown that HERMAN STETTNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hampton, in the county of Hamilton and State of Nebraska, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door Latches, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The invention relates to door latches particularly adapted to use on barn doors, and has for its object to provide a device of this character comprising angularly shaped brackets pivoted to the opposite sides of the door adjacent its free end and normally held outwardly by means of springs and provided with shoulders adapted to overlie brackets when the door is closed or opened. Also to provide a transversely disposed bolt extending through the door and the levers for limiting the outward movement thereof under the influence of the springs.
A further object is to provide arms extending outwardly from the door and provided with apertured ears, between which arms of the levers are received under normal position for the reception of a lock bail for locking the levers in normal locked position and preventing movement of the levers.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings n Figure 1 is a .horizontal sectional view through the door, showing the latching device applied thereto.
Figure'2 is a side elevation of a portion of the door and the latching device.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a conventional form of door, which door is hingedly connected at 2 to a wall 3. The door 1 opens outwardly in the direction of the arrow a and has its free end 4 positioned where it will be received in a channel 5. It has been found that latches of various kinds are not positive in their operation, and that doors, particularly barn doors are not heldin closed and open position by positive latching means. To overcome this diniculty angular-1y shaped Serial No. 614,408.
levers 6 are provided, which levers have their arms 7 extending towards the rdoor and pivotally connected at 8 to bars 9 carried by the opposite sides ofthe door. The levers 6 are provided with cam surfaces 10,
vwhich surfaces engagethe anges llof a bracket 10u disposed within the barn and the flange 12 carried by a bracket 18 disposed on the outer side of the barn kwhen the door is closed or moved to extreme open position. levers 6 on their pivotal points 8 against the action of the springs 14 which are compressed during the latching operation and after the door has assumed its closed or extreme open position, the shoulders 16 of the levers are forced over the flanges 11 or 12 according to the position of the door and under the yinfluence of the expansive action of the coiled springs 14. Extending transversely through the door 1, the
bars 9 and enlarged apertures 15 of the arms 6 of the levers is a bolt 17, which bolt, when the nut 18 is adjusted thereon, will limit the outward movement of the arms G of the levers in such a manner that the apertures 19 in the ends of the arms 16 will register with the apertures 2O in the hori-y zontally disposed ears 21 carried by outwardly extending arms 22 of the bars 9, whichr apertures 19 and 2O when in registration receive the bail of a conventional form of lock, thereby allowing the latching device to be locked, in such a manner that it cannot be unlatched. When the door is latched as shown in Figure 1, it will be seen that it will only be necessary for a r[he flanges 11 and12 rock thel sisy person desiring to open the door from the outside to pull outwardly on the arms 6 of the outer lever 6 and when the door is latched in open position and it is desired to unlatch the same so that the door can be closed, the operator imparts an outward pull on the arm 16 of the other lever 6. It will also be seen that the door may be locked in extreme open position if so desired.
From the above it will be seen that a. door latching device is provided which is aarticularly adapted for bar doors and one, wherein the door may be latched in closed or extreme open position. It will also be seen that the door may be locked in closed or open position and that either of the angularly shaped levers 6 may be actuated by a movement of the lever on the opposite side of the door, thereby giving complete control of the latching device from either side of the door, no matter whether latched in open or closed position.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is l. The combination with a door hingedly mounted in a door opening, of a latching device for said door, said latching device comprising angularly shaped levers disposed on opposite sides of the door, one of the arms of the angularly shaped levers extending towards each other and the door and pivotally connected thereto, a bolt eX- tending through the door and through enlarge-d apertures in thev other arms of the levers, coiled springs surrounding the bolt at opposite sides of the door and interposed between the levers and the door, hanged brackets carried by the door opening adjacent the free end of the door and adjacent one of the levers and also on the outside of the building, 'camming surfaces carried b the levers inthe path of the flanged brackets, arms carried by the door, said arms extending outwardly and provided with apertured ears, one of the ends of the levers being provided with apertures, said apertures of the levers and the ears registering when the door is latched in closed or open position.
2. The combination with a door latching device, said latching device comprising angularly shaped levers having one of their arms pivotally connected to the door, spring means for normally forcing Said levers 011twardly and to latching position, a bolt connecting said levers, shoulders carried by the levers and cooperating with brackets for holding the door in closed or open position, of arms extending outwardly from the door, said arms being provided with apertured ears registering with apertures in the free ends of the levers.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
HERMAN STETTNER.
