Description

l 1,482,287 D. W. DAUGHHETEE i PROTECTING SHIELD FOR COOKING sTovE BURNERS Jan. `*29, 1924,
Filed Sept. 27. 1922 Patented Jan. 219, 1924.
Unir-En stares Ne Ltlti nauw. DAUGHHETEE, or Kiowa, Kansas.
PROTEGTING SHIELD FOR COOKING-STOVE BURNERS.
Application led September 27, 1922. Serial No. 590,870.
To Vc/,ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, DAN W. DAUGHHnTnn, a citizen of the United States, residin at. Kiowa, in the county of Barber and of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protecting Shields for Cooking-Stove Burners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilledrin the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a protective shield for cook stove burners and it aims to provide a novel means whereby material falling from or boiling over from cooking'vessels willbe passed or deiiected away from the burner so as not to extinguish the flames and in the case of oil stoves, not saturate and injure the wick thereof.
It is particularly aimed to provide a construction which will form an attachment for the Vgrid of such a stove involving securing means to attachit to the grid and a collar extending from the shield and into the grid opening.
Additional objects and advantages will become apparent from av consideration of the descriptionfollowingtaken in connection with accompanying drawings illustratin one ractical embodiment.
Figure 1 is a fraglgmentaryV vertical sectional view through an oil cook stove showing my improvements in place;
igure 2 is a plan view through the at i tachment alone, and
Figure 3 is a diametric sectional view on an enlarged scale and on the line 3.-3 of Figure 2 showing the attachment of the shield to the stoveA grid. v
Like reference characters designate like or similar parts in the different views.
Referring specifically to the drawings, an oil cook stove is generally suggested at A having a casing B in which an oil burner C is'disposed below a top E removably supported over the burner and on the top E. Said grid of course may be of any suitable construction usually having an inner ring 10, an outer ring 11, and dlametric bars 1Q integral with the rings 10 and 11V and extending outwardly beyond the Vring 11 so tateV as to directly engage the top E for support on said top. ln accordance with theinvention, an annular inclined deflector or fender 12 essentially comprises the attachment, which is open at itsvcenter and there sur rounded by a collar 13 fastened as by a bolt 13a to a flange 13b of the fender. Collar 13 is preferably perforated as shown so that the Hame or heat may spread therethrough. The grid has a central opening into which said collar 13 extends, in view of the fact that the bars 12 terminate short of the center of the grid.
The attachment is adapted to be supported directly from the grid and removably. To this end stove bolts 14 or the equivalent may be passed through openings 15 in the rin 10 and openings -16 in the flange 12. Nipiits 15a are provided on said stove bolts. The flange 12 is properly spaced fromthe top by sleeves or tubes'16.
It will be noted that the diameter of the opening surrounded by flange 13 is less than the diameter of burner C and its wick.
As a result of the construction described, the attachment may be readily secured to a grid of usual construction by means of the stove bolts 14 and associated parts.
It will be realized that in use, the grid supports cooking utensils as usual and that in the event the contents thereof should boil over the same would be deflected by the flange 12- away from the burner C so that it could not engage the same in order to extinguish the flame, and particularly in the case of an oil stove-.engage the wick and ruin it as Well as extinguish the iame.
As merely one practical embodiment has `been illustrated and described, it is to be understood that changes in the details may be resorted to provided they fall within the spirit and scope ofthe invention.
I claim as my invention 1. In combination with a stove having an apertured top, aburner 4and a grid thereover, a protective shield for the burner, said shield consistin of an endless inclined flange, a collar rising, from said flange, said collar being perforated and substantially fitting and disposed within said opening, and fastenings passing through said grid and said iiange.
2. In combination with a stove having an apertured top, a burner and a grid theieover said flange7 and spacing sleeves on said bolts having an opening therethrough, a proteo intermediate said grid and said flange. l0 tive shield for the burner consisting of an In testimony whereof: l affix my signature endless inclined flange, a collar occupying in presence of two Witnesses,
and substantially fitting said opening, .Said DANW. DAUGHHETEE, collar being perforated, said flange having vWitnesses: an upstanding portion disposed Within the E. I, LONG,
collar, bolts passing through said grid and W. M. BoTmN.
