GAS BURNER.
Application filed March '2, 1928. Serial No. 258,484.
My invention relates to gas burners, particularly burners adapted for use in gas water heaters. It has for its principal ob ects to provide the several burner tips of a ring type burner with means for properly dlrecting the several flames, to make it possible for the flame of one burner tip to be ignited by the flame of an adjacent tip, to protect said burner tips from drippings, to prevent accidental extinguishing of the' flame and to provide a construction that is easily assembled and disassembled and easily installed.
The invention consists principally in the gas burner and in the parts and combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter de scribed and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings,
Fig. 1 is a top plan View of a gas burner embodying my invention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof,
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2,
Fig. 4 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 4.4 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 5 is a fragmentary sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 3,
Fig. 6 is a part elevation, part sectional view showing said burner assembled in a gas water heater.
Fig. 7 is an elevation of a modified burner; and
' Fig. 8 is a cross-sectional View thereof, on
the line 8- -8 of Fig. 7.
An annular burner ring 1 has a plurality of burner tips 2 arranged onits upper surface. Each burner tip may have a screwthreaded lower end port-ion 3 threaded into said burner ring. Each tip 2 has a central bore 4 permitting gas or other fuel to pass, therethrough. The lower end portion of the bore 4 of each tip 2 has a constricted neck portion 5 and radial cross bores 6 opening into the longitudinal bore 4 above its constricted neck portion, permitting air to enter the burner tip and mix with the fuel.
Disposed inside the circle of the burner tips '2 is a bafiie ring 7 that flares upwardly and whose upper portion overhangs or extends outwardl beyond the line of the burner tips. Said ba e ring or flame spreader 7 is proform of vided with supporting legs 8 having curved lower end portions fitting the burner ring 1.
The burner ring 1 has a diametrically extending cross piece 9 and the baflle ring 7 has a similar cross piece 10, preferably disposed at right angles to the burner ring cross piece 9 when the parts are assembled. A bolt 11 extends through said cross pieces and is provided with a nut 12; so that by tightening said nut the parts are held in assembled position.
The burner is particularly adapted for use in connection with hot water heaters, in which case it is disposed beneath the water heating element, as a boiler.
Fig. 6 illustrates a boiler 13 provided with a central flue 14 in which is disposed a heating element 15 for the water. The diameter of the circle of burner tips 2 is approximately the diameter of the annular flue space between the boiler 13 and the heating element The baflle ring spreads the flame and protects the burner tips and the burner ring from any drippings. The ring makes it possible for a flame to pass from one tip to the next tip; whereas without such a ring it would be necessary to light each tip separately. No matter from what direction a. draft or gust of air may come, some, at least of the burner tips are protected therefrom. Accordingly, the flame of the burner will never be completely extinguished; and any tips whose flames may be extinguished will be relighted by the flames of adjacent tips. The baflle ring also prevents extinguishment of the flame due to high gas pressure.
The invention is also adapted for embodiment in different constructions. Fig. 7 shows an elevation of a construction having a straight fuel supply pipe 1 with a plurality of burner tips 2 arranged along its top. A bafile strip 7 is disposed with its lower edge along one side of the line of burner tips and the upper edge of said bafilestrip overhangs the burner tips, to prevent anything from dripping on said tips. The baflle strip has supporting leg portions 8 that terminate in half-rings 20 that engage the fuel supply pipe 1*. Cooperating half-rings 21 are secured t0 the first half-rings 20 to hold the'parts supporting legs onsaid bafile ring having together. curved lower ends fitting said burner ring,
What I claim is: said baflie ring having a cross piece and a 10 A gas burner comprising a burner ring bolt securing'said cross pieces together. 5 having a cross piece, a circular series of burn- Signed at St. Louis, Missouri, this 29 day of er tips on said burner ring, a baffle ring dis- February, 1928. posed inside the circle of said burner tips, HARRY C.
