Be it known that I, Ovn L. GAMMELL, a citizen of the United States, residin at Attleboro, in the county of Bristol and btate of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuff Buttons, of which the following is a Specication.
My invention relates to separablebuttons comprising two interengageable button units particularly adapted for use in cuffs and analogous articles of wearing apparel.
The essential objects of my invention are security against accidental detachment of the units one from the other; adaptability for facile manipulation in locking and unlocking; certainty and power of interlock ing action; to prolong thelife of the resilient locking elements and protect the same from distortion or'bending;` and to attain these ends in an inexpensive structure and one in which the `parts are not subject to excessive wear. Yy l r To theabove ends essentially my invention consists in such parts and in such combinations of' parts as fallwithin the scope of the appended claims.

My button comprises a socket member 1() andan entering member 11. The latter comprises a head 12, shank or post 13, and base or flange 14, centrally of which is a stud comprising a neck 16 and a hemispherical overhanging head 17 having a flat horizontal under surface.
The socket member comprises a head 19, a'doubly tapering hollow shank or post 20 whose inner extremity forms a flange portion 21 embraced by a bead or flange 22 formed on the side23 of a casing or shell closes the opening'f26 of the shell.

indicate like 24 having a closed inner end 25 provided with a circular central opening26 surrounded by an internal hub or shoulder 27. The side 23 is provided with an oblong peripheral slot 29, yhaving an extension cavity 30 forming a shoulder 31. Rotatably mounted on the hub 27 through acentral opening 33 is an operating disk 34 provided at opposite sides of thev opening wit-li. axial lugs 35. Upon the periphery of the disk is a neck or arm portion 36 of afinger piece 37. The portion 36 is slidable in the slot 29. Abutting against the disk,and oppositely disposed relatively. to each other upon opposite sides of the center of the disk, are two at resilient cam members 38. In detail each cam member comprises an arcuate arm 39 abutting against the side 23 of' the casing, terminating at one end with a loop 40 formed by an integral curved finger 41 terminating in a cam 42 having a straight cam edge 43 engaging near its outer end one of the lugs 35. It will be understood that `the loop 40 and linger 41 are resilient, and
that the ycam edge 43` in its normaler con tracted positionl vpartially or segmentally Each arm 39 is maintained against displacement bycavities 45 `into kwhich extend periph era-l lugs or projections `46 on a retaining plate 47 adjacent the liange portion 21 of the post 20, and is provided with a central opening 48. In this instance the plate 4-7 is secured by peripheral lug 49 fitted in slot portions 30 and 31 of the casing against the shoulder 31.
Thebutton holes of the cuffs surround the Shanks 13 and 20"ofthe button members. To interengage the members the head 17 of the stud is pushed through the opening 26, and its rounded or-pointed end, entering between the cams 42 and contacting with their edges 43 in its path, distends the cams in its passage, as shown in Figures 2 and 4, As soon as the head in its advance has passed beyond the cams, the latter'are forced inwardly by the resilient fingers 41 and loops 40 against the stud neck 16 below or behind the head 17, as shownin Figures 1 and 3, and prevents any accidental disengagement of the butto-n members. To unlock and separate these members the finger piece 37 is manually pushed in the direction of the arrow shown in Figure 4 whereby the lugs 35 are caused to move along the cam edges 43 thereby distending the cams l2 to points outside the path of the head whereupon the latter may be withdrawn.
Having thus described one illustrative embodiment of my invention, it is understood that the specific terms employed arel used in a descriptive sense only, and are not for the purpose of limitation, the scope of the invention being defined by the appended claims.

A separable cuff' button formed in two :parts each having a post, a stud carried by one post, a casing ysupported by `the other post provided with an opening to receive Athe stud ieldable cam members mounted within the casing extending across the vopening adapted to engage and retain the stud, and rotatable means in the casing enparts each having a post, a stud carried by one post, a casing carried by the other post provided with an opening to receive the stud, oppositely disposed resilient cam members ,spaced apart and supported in the cas- `ing `normally closing opposite portionsof the opening, an operating disk rotatably mounted in the casing, and provided with an opening registering with the first opening,'and lugs on the disk extending between the cam members and engageable therewith.

A separable'cuff button formedin two parts Teach havinga post, a stud supported by one post, a stud carried by the other post, a Casing carried-by the'other post provided with an opening to receive the stud and with a ylateral slot, a retaining plate fast in the casing provided with a. central hole in alignment with the first opening and with marginal projections, an operating disk rotatably mounted in the casing and provided with a central opening registering with the first opening, lugs on the disk, a finger .piece on the disk extending through the slot, and oppositely disposed cam members comprising arms provided with cavities for receiving the projections, resilient fingers on the arms, and cams on the fingers engaged yby the lugs and disposed transversely of the openings and hole.
6. A separable cuff button formedfin two parts each having va post, a stud carried by one post comprising a neck and a hemispherical head provided with a flat bottom surface, a casingsupported by the opposite post provided with an opening to receive the `head land neck, and yielding' members mounted within the casing extending across the opening adapted to be displaced by the head and engage the neck, and a rotatable member cooperating with said members to distend the latter outward.
