lMy' present nventenl `i rov les a very simple and improved yet stable ruler which may be used either as a lineal scale or as a straight edge for ruling with pen or pencil. l

Furthermore, the invention provides a device of thisclass adapted for use as a paper cutter and so constructed that when placed over freshly-inked lines or characters the likelihood of blotting is considerably reduced.

These and other objects and advantages I successfully attain in the embodiment hereinafter described, defined in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application and in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts through-y out the several views, of which,-

Fig. 2 is a transverse section thereof taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1.

Fig. 3 is a reverse plan of the device as applied in cutting paper, and v Fig. 4 is an end elevation of the same.

Referring, now, to the illustrations the device consists of an elongated sheet metal strip having its `side edge portion bent to provide a flange, 5, disposed at anr acute angle to the intermediate portion, l6, the other side edge portion, 7, being bent at a slight angle to the plane of the intermediate portion, 6, the extreme edge of the portion, 7, being preferably beveled to a sharp edge,

as at 8. The flange, 5, is preferably folded upon itself, as at 9. As clearly shown in Fig. 2, the flange, 5, and portion, 7, are so related that the flang, 5, will be vertically disposed when the ruler rests with its flange and edge, 8, on a horizontal surface. In this position the face of flange, 5, may be used as a straight edge for ruling with either a pen or pencil. Either or both sides of the ruler may be provided with graduated scales, 10. .may be used as a straightedgel for rulingwith pen or pencil. Also, when held this .ront/1.011. on@ a .Sheet of perenne clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4,'the paper may be accurately torn or cut by the beveled edge, 8, by pulling upwardly on the portion of the paper exposed at the edge of the ruler. It will also be observed that when using the ruler for this purpose very little pressure is required upon the ruler, as with a light pressurethestuds, 11, will prevent relative movement between the ruler and paper while the latter 'is being cut.

Having thus described myinvention, what l claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is,-

1. A ruler consisting of an elongated plate formed with flanged and unflanged ruling edges and a flat intermediate portion kinterconnecting the two edges, the flanged edge portion being disposed at an acute angle to the intermediate portion.

2. A ruler consisting of an elongated plate formed with anged and unflanged ruling edges and a flat intermediate portion interconnecting the two edges, the` flangedvedge portion being disposed at an acute angle to the intermediate portion, and the unflanged edgel and the edge of the flange being dis-` posed in a commonfplane at right angles to the plane of the flange. I

3. A ruler consisting of an elongated plate formed with flanged and unflanged ruling edges and an intermediate portion interconnecting the two edges, and a `longitudinal series of spaced studs projecting from the face of the intermediate portion opposite from the flange.

4. A ruler consisting of an elongated plate formed with flanged and unflanged ruling edges and a flat intermediate portion interconnecting the two edges, the flanged edge portion being disposed at an acute angle to the intermediate portion, and the unflanged edge and` the edge of the flange being disposed in a common plane at right angles to A11o y y5. A ruler consisting of an elongated plate' l bent at an obtuse angle to the face of the intermediate portion opposite from the a'nge, and a longitudinal series of spaced studs projecting from the faee of the intermediate fortion opposite from the flange.
