Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. i
GAMALIEL B. THOMPSON, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
lIVIPRVEMENT IN SHIRT-BOSOMS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 148,005, dated February 24, 1874; application filed February 2, 1874.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, GAMALIEL B. THOME SON, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, State of Massachusetts, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Shirts, of which the following is a description suiciently full, clear, and exact to enable any person skilled in the art or science to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, reference being' had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this speciiieation, in whiche Figure l is a view of a shirt fitted `with my improved bosom, and so arranged as to exhibit portions of the red, white, and blue plaits. Fig. 2 is a view of the same arranged to show part-s of the red, white, blue, and gray plaits.
Like letters refer to like parts in the different figures ofthe drawing.
My invention relates more especially to that class of bosoms which are adapted for use in woolen shirts; and consists in anovcl construction and arrangement of the parts, by which a pleasing' variety of colors can be shown, or a Vclean ybosom be substituted for a soiled one, without a change of the garment, as hereinafter more fully set forth.
The extreme simplicityr of my invention ren ders an elaborate descrip tion unnecessary.
In Fig. l A is the body, andB the collar, of the shirt. The bosom may be said to consist of two double bosoms,tl1e outer front edges bein g stitched together, and one edge of the outer half of each, or that nearest the arm, being attached to the shirt-front, as shown. Each half ofthe bosom has its inner and outer sections made of cloth of different colors, the outer sections of the bosom shown in Fig. l being red and white, and the inner sections blue and gray, the gray being shown in the next ligure. The blue and red sections, fFig. 2, are attached or sewed together from to z, from z to s, and from s to y; but front y to m, and m to n, the red section of the bosom is attached to the body of the shirt only. From ai to d, from d to j', from j' to g, and from g to y, that edge of the blue is left free. The same description will apply, except as to colors, to the opposite bosom, composed of white and gray cloth."
From the foregoing the nature and opera tion of my invention will be readily understood by all conversant with such matters.
When it is desired to exhibit a red bosom, the blue plait aFig. 1, is turned or folded over upon the white plait b,and buttoned under the collar B by the flap t'. If it is desirable to show a blue bosom, the apt' is buttoned to the button f, and the loose edge f g of the blue is pulled out and carried over the white, and buttoned under the collar B by the flap d, Fig. 2. If a white bosom is to be shown, the red and blue section of the bosom is folded underneath the gray, leaving `the white out-side, and the iapp buttoned to the button r. The gray bosom is brought to the front in the same manner described for the blue. Buttons are provided inside the neck of the shirt for fastening the flaps h, p, z, and j', when the same are folded in. Vhen the white bosom is at the front, that part of the red and blue section from s to y is folded in, and the corresponding part of the white and gray brought forward and` buttoned nor any part thereof, when in and of itself considered; but
What I claim is- In combination with a shirt-body, the two reversible bosoms, when constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner and for the purpose set forth.
GAMALIEL B. THOMPSON.
