F. S. WILLIAMS. SHIRT BOSOM.
No.297,896. 1 Patented Apr. 29, 1884.

FRANCIS S. WILLIAMS, OF BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SHIRT-BOSOM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 297,896, dated April 29, 1884.
Application filed November 17, 1883. (No model.)
To 00% whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FRANcIs S. WILLIAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Shirt-Bosoms, of which the following is a specification.
It is a matter of frequent'occurrenee for a 7 person having on'a clean shirt-bosom to drop something from the mouth while eating or drinking, whereby the bosom becomes soiled, thus rendering it necessary to the person desiring to present a clean front either to change the shirt or cover the bosom with a scarf or something to conceal the soiled portion. The portion of the shirt-bosom so.soiled is almost invariably the central part or plait.
It is the object of my invention to obviate the necessity of changing the shirt or covering the shirt-bosom in the event of the accidental soiling of the same; and the invention consists in making the shirt-bosom with two central I folds or plaits susceptible of being overlapped 0'0 are two central plaits, which at their lower ends are not sewed to the shirt, but are free, so as to be capable of being opened outwardly to allow either one or the other to be exposed in front, as desired. The two plaits the studs, place the soiled plait at the rear,
and the clean plait in front, and replace the studs, thus presenting to all appearance a clean shirt-bosom, and saving much annoyance, time,
and trouble.
A shirt-bosom made as above described, with two independent plaits in front, requires no more linen in its manufacture than an ordinary shirt-bosom. It can also be readily ironed, as each plait can be foldedback out of the way of the other during the operation.
I am. aware that shirts have been made with two overlapping bosoms, so that one can be folded over the other. This I do not claim; but
What I claim as my invention, and desire to' secure by Letters Patent, is
A shirt-bosom made with two single front plaits capable of being lapped one over the other, and provided with corresponding holes for the insertion of studs, each plait being free at the lower end, and both to be secured to the neckband by a single stud in front, all as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
FRANCIS S. WILLIAMS.
