' R. KING BUCKLE Filed Dec. 9, 1922 INVENTDH Patented Dec. 25, 1923.
UNETEE RUFUS KING, OF PLAINVILLE, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR TO BUGBEE & NILES COM- PANY, OF NORTH ATTLEBORQ, MASSACHUSETTS.
BUCKLE.
application filed December 9, 1922. Serial No. 805,775.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Burns KING, a c tizen of the United States, residing at Plain ville, in the county of Norfolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in buckles, and pertains more especially to an improved manner of connecting the cross-bar carrying the tongue to the buckle body.
The primary object of the invention is to provide means which enables the cross-bar to be easily and quickly applied to the buckle body, and without the use of any extraneous fasteningor attaching means, or elements, and to also enable the cross-bar to be formed of a piece of ordinary hollow wire.
Still further, the invention aims to provide a method of attaching the cross-bar to the buckle body, which utilizes the spring preperties inherent to the buckle body, to not only enable the cross-bar to be easily secured to the body and held in its assembled relation thereto, but which also permits of removal of the cross-bar in an equally easy and quick manner, should same be found necessary or desirable.
The invention also aims to generally simplify the attachment of the cross-bar, and to provide an efficient connection, and has still further and other objects which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings Figure 1, is a plan view of the invention in assembled form;
Figure 2, is a similar view showing the cross-bar during the act of assemblage;
Figure 3, is a detail plan view of the buckle body; and
Figure 4, is a top plan view of the crossbar.
In proceeding in accordance with the present invention, a. cross-bar l, is employed, and which is provided with anotch or cutout 2, on its upper side and at one end thereof, the cut-out extending through the end of the cross-bar. The cross-bar is formed of ordinary hollow wire. The buckle body B, has arms A, which are parallel and which have their outer ends formed with notches or cut-outs 3 and 4, the latter being formed on the inner side faces of the respective arms. Fingers or ears '5 and 6, extend inwardly towards each other and are located or formed on the inner sides of the arms A, just above the notches 3 and 4:, so that the under sides of the arms define the upper sides of the notches. The finger 5 is further formed with a cut-out 7 on its upper face forming a shoulder.
The parts are assembled by first placing the tongue 8 on the cross bar 1, following which the unslotted end of the cross bar is engaged with the ear or finger 5 as illustrated in Figure 2, the cut-out 2 of bar 1 being faced upwardly, whereupon the bar 1 is forced upwardly, causing its bottom edge 9 to ride against the inner side of the arm A having the ear or finger 6, the bar 1 urging or forcing said arm A outwardly, so that the bar 1 is sprung into position as depicted in Figure 1, wherein the ear or finger 6 is received in the cut-out 2, the lower sides of the bar 1 being received in the notches 3 and 4% while the upper side of the bar 1 at the unnotched end of the latter engages the shoulder 7. Due to the inherent sprin properties of the metal of which the body l3 of the buckle is formed, it will be seen that a cross bar cannot be disengaged from the buckle body, except by the expenditure of some considerable force. The edge 9 at the notched end of the bar 1 acts 1n the nature of a cam against the arm A. of the buckle body, in moving the latter to allow the bar to be engaged with the fingers 5 and 6.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A buckle having a body formed with a pair of spaced arms and provided with fingers on the inner sides of the arms, the inner sides of the arms having notches below the fingers, and one of the fingers having its outer side notched, and a tongue carrying cross-bar formed of hollow wire and having a notch or cut-out on its upper side at one end thereof, the opposite end of the wire rod receiving the finger having the notch at its outer side therein, and the notched end of the wire rod receiving the other finger, the bottom portions of the ends of the wire rods engaging in the respective notches below the fingers.
2. A buckle having a body formed with a pair of spaced arms and provided with fingers on the inner sides of the arms, and a hollow tongue carrying cross bar the fingers being formed to be received in the respective ends of the cross bar. 7 3; In combination with a buckle body having spaced parts formed with inwardly facing cross bar formed to be sprung into engagement with the fingers. Y
e. In a combination with a buckle body having spaced parts formed with inwardly facing fingers, a, hollow tongue carrying cross bar having a notched part to receive one of the buckle parts and to allow the bar to be moved toreceive the fingers in its ends fingers, a hollow tongue-carrying.
parts outwardly.
5. In combination with a buckle body'- having spaced projections, a tongue-carrying cross-bar formed with hollow ends to receive said projections therein, and means whereby to allow the connection of the cross-bar to said projections by relative movement of the cross-bar to the proj ections;
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in thepresence of two subscribing witnesses.
