Be it known that l, Dennis F. HnNDRroxs, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Russell, in the county of Greenup and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway-Car Journal Bearings, of which the following is a specification. l
This invention relates to railway car frames and journal bearings and particularly to novel means whereby roller bearings are held in spaced relation to each other and inoperative relation to an axle, ythe bearing box having novel means by which it is as- 7 sembled with relation to the frame to have oscillatory motion transversely of the frame.
It is a further object of this invention to provide a bearing box having novel configuration adapted to seat in and engage one end of a side frame of a truck in order that there will be no lost motion between the box and side frame, due Vto thrust action, and in which a lateral movement of the box is allowed with respect to the side frame. The last mentionedcondition has been found advantageous in obviating fractures or injury to the side frame or bearing when derailment of the truck occurs, and permits a ready readjustment of the parts when replaced on a track.
lt is a still further object of this invention to provide a bearing of the type described in which the journal and roller bearings are geared together, and in which the roller bearings are geared to the box, the same being associated with a mounting that permits movement of the box laterally of the frame to compensate for any inequalities of the gage of the rails and other defects of the roadbed, within predetermined bounds.
It is a still further object of this invention to provide novel means for attaching the box to the side frame to insure a durable construction while permitting the action heretofore indicated, the said device being of such construction as to permit expeditious mounting or dismounting of the box.
With the foregoing and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction, and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and claimed.
ln describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to thel accompanying drawings forming part of this application wherein like characters denote corresponding parts in the several views, which- Figure 1 illustrates a. view in elevation of a car truck embodying the invention;

ln these drawings 10 denotes the side frame of a truck, and the constructionthereof between the boxes may be of any appropriate type and the inventor does not wish to be'limited with respect to the shape of the side frame nor the manner in which it is constructed or braced.
.Each end of the side frame is of identical construction and the journal, boxes, and bearings at each end of the frame are of the same construction, and a description of the assembly at one end will suflice as a disclosure for an understanding of the invention by those skilled in the art.
It will be seen from an inspection particularly of ligs. 3 and 5 that there is a tubular extension 11 at the end of the frame and that this terminates in a downward and outward extension 12, the wall 13 of which referably extends outwardly at an angle o' the same degree as the angle of the wall 14, and these walls form a seat in which a Sectional box 15 is held. The outer surfaces of the box are shaped to the contour of the walls 13 and 14 and the under surface of the tubular extension 11 making a close fit to obviate lost motion.
As stated, provision is made for retaining the roller bearings in spaced relation to each other within the box, and to that end the interior of the box is provided with two sets of teeth 16 and 17, the said sets of teeth being arranged circumferentially of the interior of the box and in spaced relation to each other and these sets of teeth are intended to engage sets of teeth 18 and 19, respectively, of the anti-friction rollers 20. The teeth 18 and in and 19 of the rollers also engage sets of teeth 2l and 22, respectively, formed Von :the journal 23, and when the journal and anti-frie tion rollers are assembled Vin the box, they will be in the relationsdshowniii,Fig, 3.1
The box is preferably sectional and the sections may be secured togethervtby.fasten-4 ings such as bolts 24.
The upper section of each'box is preferably provided wth `*sets of apertured ears and 26, the ears of each vset being in alinement and provided with rods, bolts or other fastenings 27 which are utilized for connecting the saddle 28 to the ears. The saddle is of curved configuration and its inner surface is preferably of the same contour as the outer surface of the tubular extension 11 of the frame in order that the saddle will rock on the tubular extension. The upper surface of the box is further provided with a convex seat 29 .in which the lower surface of the tubular extension 11 'is located. By the@ mounting just described, the box will have an oscillatory motion with respect to' theex tension yof ythe frame with the resultant advantage heretofore indicated.
Any suitable closure 30 inV the vnature of a gate may be provided for opening Vor closing the entrancel to the interior of the box, but the inventor doesk not wish to belimited with respect to these details.
