Application filed February 10. 1912. Serial No. 676.795.
To U t i ItH/t i." may emlerrn:
lle it l\'tlt)\\'ll that l. la-mxann (l. \l'oons. a t-itixen ot the lnited States. and resident ol Pittsburgh. in the eounty ol' Alleghwvand State ol lenn vlvanizn have lll\ttlltt 1 new and usel'ul Improvement in 'lruelt-Frames and 'lournahlloves; and I do hereby deelare the l'ollowing to be a lull, elear. and exaet deseription thereol r\l v invention relates to railway truekl'rames, and the journal-l ox mounted therein. its objeet being to simplily the eonstruetion of sueh railway truelelrame and journal-boxes by l'orming the top of the journal box as an integral part ol the trm-le'l rame, whereby the trueli-l'rame is strengthened and the use ol the extra member forming the top of thebox is dispensed with, this in turn reduees the weight and liability ot the t lilt' erent parts to rattle loose in serviee.
in the aeeom mnying drawings; Figure l is a side view: Fig. 2 is a plan view: Fig. El is an enlarged seetion on the line 2l--l1 Fig. 2; Fig. l a set'tion on the line l- Fig. '2. Fig. 5 is an enlarged view ol a portion ol the end of the frame slnnving the box in 1)()" sition; Fig. (3 is an enlarged seetion on the line (J G Fig. 1, and Fig. 7 is a modilied form of my invention.
l have illustrated my invention in t'ottneetion with the ordinary diamond t'rnelt- Il'rame eomposedol the top-member 2, the bottom member 23 and the l)olslet'eolnnlns -l.
Formed integral with the top memher .3 at each end thereof are the journal-box top-members 'the strengthening rib t3 whieh extends longitudinally ot the topmember .3 ol the l'ramo unites with and forms an integral part with the parallel ribs 7 extending along the top ol the top member 5 of the journal-hox. This top member 3 of the journal-box is provided with the hinge eonneetion h to whieh the journal-box lid may be hinged. The downwardly extending flanges l) are t'ormed on the top-member through \\'ltlt'lt the rivets it) pass \vhieh eonneet the journal-box ll to the top-member 5. The lugs 5 are prtn vided whieh are spared a suitable distance from the flanges t) so that the upper ends ()Ili the journalbo:\' may be insertet l. between said lugs and said flanges. tiarthermore. the middle or deepest portion 9 ol the flanges f.) are slotted or reeessed as at it to reeeive the upper edge 11 of the box member at the mid-portion of same. The journal-box when seeured in this manner is held rigidly in plaee and there is no possibility of any lateral movement of same being held between said flanges and lugs. The boxanember 11 may be formed of wrought metal and is provided with the lip portion '12 to-providt the usual opening 13 for the axle-box lid. The box-member 11 is provided with the upwardly turned flange lt whieh serves as a wall to retain the oil. The poeltet tor the dust guard is formed by means of a pressed metal plate t5 having flanges it) as indieated in dotted lines Fi las well as the bottom flange N. This poelv'et may he seeured to the box-member ll by suitable rivets passing through the flanges tti. The tie-har to passes beieath the journal-box member 11 and bolts it) pass through sail tiebar and through the openings it in the top-member 5. These openin;v '20 are tornied between the ribs 7 as indi ated in Fig. 2.
lly the above eonstruetioli I railway trueletrame in whieh the top-men) ber ot'tllt journal-lam is formed as an integral part ot the t'rame'. and at the same time the l'rame is strengthened by the additional metal at the ends employed to form said top-member. ifnrthermore, i do away with an extra part as it' has been generally enstomary hereto'l'ore to have the top-member ol the box formed ot aseparat'e piece of metal. it is a simple matter to attaeh the box-member to the depending flanges S) otthe t'rame and where the tie-bar is etnployetht'he journal-box btilts pass direetly up through the top-member of the trneletrame.
provide In Fig. 7 i have illustrated a modified l'orm ol my invention in whit-l1 the tie-bar is dispensed with and the boxaneniber 25 has its lower portion rounded or (curved and is seenred by the rivets Qti to the flanges 97 in the ordinary manner. The rib 7 may be single or double as desired.
