TRUCK SIDE-FRAME CONSTRUCTION.

' Be'it known that I, JOHN A. LAMONT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Truck Side-Frame Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a truck side frame and more particularly'to a side frame for a six-wheel truck.
The object of this invention is to provide a truck side frame which is simple, relatively light, and yet durable in construction, and having a plurality of portions adapted to co operate with journal boxes, bolster members, equalizing members, etc, in a manner to meet all the requirements for successful commercial operation.
This and other objects are accomplished by means of the arrangement disclosed on the accompanying sheet of drawings in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a truck,
side frame embodying my invention;
Figure 2 is a fragmentary top plan view of the same side frame;
Figure 3 is a fragmentary bottom ,plan view of said side frame;
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view showing an inside elevation of the side frame at one of the bolster openings; and
Figures 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are respectively sectional views taken in the planes of lines 55, 66, 7-7, 8-8 and 99 of Figure 1.
The various novel features of my invention will be apparent from the following description and drawings and will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the figures of the drawings, it will be noted. thatI have disclosed my invention in connection with a six-wheel truck side frame cast in a single piece and forming a beam 10. This side frame is provided with a middle pocket 11, for the reception of intermediate journal box and equalizer parts and with two other pockets 12 intermediate said middle pocket 11 and the end of the frame for receiving end journal boxes. The middle pocket 11, has side walls 13, by means of which the associated middle journal box is guided in its relative vertical movement. This middle pocket 11, also has sidewalls 14 for limit ing relative lateral movement between the middle journal box and the side frame. As shown, the side walls 1 1 are provided with [ribs 15 for increasing the strength of the section at this point. By referring particularly to Figure 8 it will be noted that the side frame at the section in question is channel shaped and is narrower at the top than at the intermediate and lower portions of the side frame, upwardly converging portions 16 connecting the wider and narrower parts of the side frameat this section.
Each of the pockets 12 for receivingend journal boxes has downwardly extending walls 17 for guiding the associated journal boxes in their relative vertical movement with respect thereto. The roof of each of the pockets 12 is provided with a recess 18 for the reception of a rib formed on the upper surface of the associated journal box. Formed integrally with the guide wall 17 and on one side thereof are walls 27 depending from the main portion of the side frame and being circular in plan as shown particularly in Figures 2 and 3 for the reception of springs which are interposed between the side frame and associated journal boxes. The depth of these spring pockets 27, increases toward. the guide wall 17 of the pockets 12 and are formed to retain the springs in question. In the roof of these spring pockets downwardly extending lugs 19 are formed for centering the springs.
Intermediate the middle pocket 11 and each of the end pockets 12 are pockets 20 for bolster members. In this particular instance, the pockets extend upwardly within the side frames and have side walls 21 which act as vertical guides for the bolster ends and also cooperate with the bolster members for taking all thrusts and shocks incident to starting and stopping of the car. The pockets also have end walls 25 for increasing the strength of the section.
Intermediate each bolster pocket 20 and the adjacent end pocket 12 the walls of the side frame are provided with horizontally aligned openings 22 for the reception of pins 23 for forming pivotal supports for hangers supporting ends of equalizing levers upon which the bolster members rest. In cases where trucks are operated on switch backs or tracks having a vertical curvature, it is necessary to provide increased clearance between the side walls 21 of the pockets and the bolster members to done by supporting at least one end of each equalizing lever by a swinging hanger. That the hanger may be of the proper length to permit the proper swing, the upper end of the hanger is pivoted up between the walls of the side frame at a point substan tially-in or above the upper wall of the associated bolster pocket.

An integrally formed side frame for a six-Wheel truck having formed therein pockets for intermediate and end journal boxes and bolster members, depending wall portions forming pockets for the reception of springs at the sides of certain associated journal boxes, and equalizing-lever hanger supporting portions arranged in said frame between pockets for the bolster members and adjacent spring pockets for permitting longitudinal movement of the equalizing levers V 2. An integrally formed side frame for a six-Wheel truck having formed therein spaced pockets for intermediate and end journal boxes and bolster members, and openings for forming supporting bearings for equalizing-lever hangers and arranged between the bolster member pockets and adjacent pockets for end journal boxes for permitting longitudinal movement of the equalizing levers.
