The invention relates to cast metal side frames for car trucks and seeks to provide an improved side frame in which the metal is economically distributed to afford a strong construction and particularly at the ends of a cast steel side frame having integral journal boxes. A further object of the invention is to provide a stout construction at the central portion of theaside frame and which is particularly adapted for use with side frames of the type set forth in an application for Letters Patent filed in the United States Patent Office May 16, 1924, Serial No. 713,675, Patent No. 1,594,576, dated August 3, 1926, and
' which is provided with an enlarged central bearing opening for receiving a relatively oscillating bolster "arrier.
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in preferred forms in the accompanying drawing, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The improved side frame comprises upper and lower or compression and tension members 10 and 11, journal boxes 12, and connecting struts or columns 13, all formed integrally of cast steel. The (JOII'IPIOSSlOIl and tension members are preferably reversely arched and their central portions are areshaped in the, preferred form shown, and merge into oppositely inclined, substantially straight portions. The upper or compression member comprises side walls or flanges 14 and a transverse web 15 which is substantially continuous throughout the length of the compression member and preferably extends along its upper edge so that this member is of inverted U-shape in section throughout the greater portions of its length. Intermediate their center and end portions the lower edges of the side flanges 14 are preferably thickened to provide stiffening beads 16. The ends of the compression member extend over the journal boxes and its transverse web and side flanges merge into the top walls 17 of the journal boxes with the extreme downturned end portions of the web merging into the outer edges of the journal box tops.
The tension member 11 comprises side walls 18, in the planes of the side walls 14 of the compression member, and transverse webs 19 and 20 extending along its upper and lower edges. One of the transverse webs of the tension member is continuous from end to end of the side frame and the other is preferably provided with elongated openings between its central and end portions, so that the tension member has central and end portions of closed box section and intermediate portions of U-section. In the forms shown in Figs. 1 to 6, the upper transverse Web 19 of the tension member is continuous and its lower web is provided with elongated openings 21. In the form shown in Figs. 7 and 8, the lower web is continuous and elongated openings 22 are formed in the intermediate portions of the upper transverse web. Preferably, as shown, the edges of the openings 21 and 22 in both forms are provided with stiffening beads 23 and 24 respectively.
The ends of the tension member are disposed immediately below the end portions of the compression member and merge into the upper portions of the inner side walls of the journal boxes, with the ends of its transverse web 19, which are slightly curved as shown, in line with and merging into the inner edges of the to walls 17 of the journal boxes. The ends 0 the transverse web 19 and the top walls of the journal boxes form lower walls for the end portions of the compression member so that such end portions are of closed box section and, as most clearly shown in Fig. 2, the end portions of the side frame adjacent the journal boxes are of double box section. In this way, stout end constructions are provided in a side frame having integral journal boxes and it is not necessary to provide vertical stiffening fins between the compression and tension members and the journal boxes. Also, the arrangement of the box sections of the compression and tension members merging respectively into the top and the upper portions of the side walls of the journal boxes, is such as to readily withstand the stresses to which these portions of the side frame are subjected in service. Preferably, as shown, the extreme end portions of the lower transverse web of the tension member are downwardly curved and triangular stiffening gussets 25 (see Figs. 1 and 4) in alignment with such end portions, extend between the ends of the tension member and the side walls of the journal boxes to resist transverse strains.
The central portion of the tension member is, as stated, of closed box section and extends below the central opening of the side frame that receives the transverse connecting means of the car truck, and the central portion of the upper transverse web 19 of the tension member forms part of a transverse web 26 that extends about the central opening and between the side flanges 14 and 18 of the compression and tension members. This web 26 forms the inner walls of the struts or columns 13 and the lower wall of the central portion of the compression member so that the part of the compression member above the central opening is of closed box section. Preferably also, the struts or columns 13 at the sides of the central opening are of hollow box section having side walls in the planes and forming continuations of the side flanges 14 and 18, and also having transverse webs 27 extending between the lower edges of the compression member and the upper edges of the tension member.
- In the construction shown, the transverse web 26 about the central opening of the side frame is cylindrical, projects slightly beyond the side walls or flanges of the compression and tension members to provide projecting circular flanges 28 and forms a bearing opening for a relatively oscillating bolster carrier. In the form shown, as in the construction set forth in the prior application referred to, the bolster carrier ring 29 is formed of cast metal, is provided at its lower portion with a horizontal supporting sill 30 for one end of a spring plank 31, and with integral guides 32 at its sides for cooperating with the end portion of a truck bolster 33, the latter being held in position and in interlocked relation with the bolster guides 32 by springs 34 arranged in the carrier rin between the ends of the spring plank and olster. Also, as set forth in the prior application, the carrier ring is held in position in the side frame by keys 35 secured within pockets in the side portions of the central opening of the side frame and engaging elongated slots in the bolster carrier ring, thus interconnecting these parts in a manner permitting the relative oscillating movement thereof as the car truck passes over irregularities in the track.
In the improved construction shown, the
pockets for the keys 35 are formed by webs 36 extending between the webs 26 and 27 and connected to the side walls of the struts by stiffening webs 37 (see Figs. 1 and The side walls and the webs 36 are provided with openings for receiving bolts or the like by which the keys 35 are secured in position.
The improved side frame has a central portion of stout construction which permits of the formation of a very large central opening that is particularly well adapted for accommodating a relatively oscillating bolster support and the springs and bolster carried thereby. Preferably, as shown, the hollow portions of the improved side frame are provided with core openings 38. Preferably also, brake hanger supports 39 are cast integral with the side frame. Changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having integral journal boxes and compression and tension members, said compression member merging into the top walls of the journal boxes and said tension member merging into the upper portions of the inner side walls of the journal boxes and each of said members having closed box sections adjacent the journal boxes, substantially as described.
2. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having integral journal boxes and compression and tension members merging into the journal box tops and inner side walls respectively, each of said members having a transverse web and vertical side flanges and closed box sections adjacent the journal boxes, substantially as described.
3. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having integral journal boxes and compression and tension members merging respectively into the journal box tops and the upper portions of the inner side walls of the journal boxes, said members having transverse webs and inner and outer vertical side walls forming superposed, closed box sections adjacent the journal boxes, substantially as described.
4. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having a central opening for receiving the transverse connecting means of the truck, and comprising compression and tension members, and. integral columns and journal boxes, said members having box sections above and below said central opening, and double box sections adjacent the journal boxes, substantially as described.
5. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having a central opening for receiving the transverse connecting means of the truck,and comprising reversely arched compression and tension members, and integral columns and journal boxes, said members having hollow box sections adjacent the journal boxes and above and below the central opening and inv verted-iU- seeti'ons between-thee trill and end portions thereof. An integral cast metal side frame for car trucks having a central bearing opening for a relatively oscillating carrier having-a spring seat'and bolster guides in the plane of the side frame, comprising inner and outer side walls and upper and lower walls forming, with the adjacent portion of the side walls, upper compression and lower tension members, said tension member being of hollow box section below said opening.
8. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having an enlarged central portion provided with a cylindrical bearing opening for a relatively oscillating carrier having a spring seat and bolster guides in.the plane of the side frame, and comprising reversely arched compression and tension members integrally connected at their ends and having transverse webs and side flanges and central portions of box section forming the upper and lower portions of the bearing opening and columns extending between and integral with said members forming the side portions of such opening.
9. A cast metal side frame for car trucks having an enlarged central portion forming a bearing opening for receiving and support ing a relatively oscillating bolster carrier and comprising compression and tension members and integral journal boxes and columns, the
