Description

nyttt-znsctt. Grate-Cleaning Attachments. No.t47,7tt, Patented Feb. 17.1874.
Inventor: Witnesses: W JV Attorneys.
UNITED STA'rns Parana Crrron ADOLPH TIENSOH, OF MEMPHIS, TENNESSEE.
IMPROVEMENT IN GRATEGLEAMNG ATTACHMENTS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,713, dated February 17,1874; application filed January 29, 1874. i
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ADOLPH TIENSGI-I, of Memphis, in the county of Shelby and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and Improved Grate-Gleaner Attachment; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification.
My invention is an improvement in the class of grate'cleanin g attachments formed of a rockshaft, provided with lateral arms, which work up and down between the grate-bars. The invention relates to the arrangement of footlevers with the grate for supporting and .operating it, as hereinafter described.
I11 the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a front view, and Fig. 2 a crosssection, of a grate provided with my improved cleaning attachment.
A is a fire-place grate of the ordinary or suitable construction. The cleaning attachment is formed of the curved bar 13 and blades or fingers G. The bar is pivoted to the under side (near the rear cross-bar) of the grate, and the fingers project forward and curve upward to adapt them to be worked up and down between the gratebars, when the bar is oscillated or swung on its pivots. A foot-lever, D, is pivoted to the side bars of the grate, and connected with the bar B by means of a curved bar, E. The levers D project laterally from the grate, so as to be removed from the influence of greatest heat, and for convenience of access of operation by the foot. The fingers are maintained or supported in the horizontal position by means of the'foot-lever connection, aswill be readily understood from the draw ing. Thus the grate may be cleaned at any time by merely placing the foot on one of the levers D, and depressing it to cause the fingers G to rise between the grate-bars; and, on removing the foot they fall by their own weight and that of the superposed coal, cinders, and ashes.
I claim- The combination, with the grate and cleaning attachment B O, of link E and the footlevers D, pivoted to the side bars of the grate and extended or projecting laterally, as shown and described, for the purpose specified.
