SPECIFICATION farming .To all whom t't may concern: Be it known that I, LEMUEI. BANNISTER, of the city and county ot' Philadelphia, and State ot' Pennsylvania, have invented Improvements in Grates, o t which the following is a specification. V

My invention isa grate constructed, as fully described hereinafter, so as to facilitate the removal ot' the contents of the tire-pot,'avoid obstructing the ash-pit, and with bars constructed to avoid the loss resulting from the ordinary constructions.

In the drawings, Figure l is a longitudinal section of a grate showing my improvements, and Fig. 2 is a plan View.

In ordinary grates provided with rockingbars it is commonto dump the tire or dis` charge the contents of the tire-pot by dropping the front ends of one or more. bars. This is` objectionable, as thedropped bar obstructs access to the ashpit,aud when embedded in the ashes is difficult to elevate. -I avoid these objections, first, by so constructing one of the bars that it may be turned to such a position independently ,of the others as to open a passage for the discharge ot the contents of the tire-pot, and, secondly, by placing such bar at the rear ofthe grate, therebyavoiding'any obstructing ofthe ash-pit'at the front.

One or more fingers of a rocking grate-bar will sometimes burn away or become warped by heat, so that the entire har must be discarded. I avoid this by making each bar with a series ot sockets, w, adapted to receive the ends ot'deta'chable ngers, any one otl which may be removed when injured and a new one substituted therefor.

I am aware that grates have been made with independent bars,'any one of which may be turned to bring the ngers to a vertical position. I do not claim this, my invention relating to that class of grat-es in which the raking is done bythe simultaneous movement ot' the connected bars.

I claimel. The combination, with the rocking tingered bars ot' a grate, connected as set forth,
