Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
OSWALD J. CATHGART, 0F NEVJIBURGH, NEW YORK.
VANITY CASE.
Original application filed October 2, 1922, Serial No. 591,712. Divided and this application filed January 26, 1923.
To all whom it may canoe m,
Be it known that I, Oswixno J. Cixrrronn'r, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newburgli, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Vanity Cases; and I do hereby declare the follow: ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention consists in the novel features hereinafter described, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which illustrates two forms in which I have contemplated embodying my invention; selected by me for purposes of illustration, and the said invention is fully disclosed in the following description and: claims.
This application is a division of m former application for Letters Patent of the United States filed by me October 2, 1922, Serial No. 591,712.
The object of my invention is to provide a vanity case of small, compact form, suitable to be carried in a ladys hand-bag in which a quantity of powder and a smaller quantity of rouge with appropriate puffs for the application thereof in conjunction with a hand mirror, are so arranged that by simply opening the case both the powder and rouge and their appropriate puffs will be accessible for use in conjunction with the mirror, which is supported by the opening of the case in posi- (ion for use with both of said cosmetics, without inverting the case. My improved construction of vanity case also provides for the use of apowder puli' which is substantially COGXLGHSiVQ with the dimensions of the main body members of the vanity case, thus giving the largest area to the powder pufl, and provision is also made for preventing the rouge from becoming mixed with the powder.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, which illustrates two forms or embodiments of the invention selected by me for the purpose of illustrating the same,
I .Fg. i is a perspective view of one form of vanity case embodying my invention showing the case open and the powder puff detached for greater clearness.
Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the vanity case shown in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a modified form of the invention.
Serial No. 814,973.
Referring to the form ofmy invention illustrated in F l and 2, 1, represents the main body member, and, 2, represents the main cover member, the said members being preferably circular and hinged together so that they may be opened or separated in the manner illustrated in Fig. 1, by raising the main cover member. lVithin the main cover member is located a mirror, indicated at 3, of substantially the same diameter as the main cover member, and held in place by a retaining ring, 4, in the usual manner.
Within one of the main body members and as shown in these figures, within the main body member, 1, is a rouge compartment, indicated at 5, of smaller diameter than the main body men'iber, and preferably circular in form, and opening within the space between the main body member and covermember so as to be accessible when the main cover member is raised. The rouge compartment is located eccentrically and closely adjacent to the lateral wall of the body member. Vvithin one of the main body members is a powder compartment which, in the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, is located within the main body member, 1, and substantially surrounds the rouge compartment, the latter being located eccentrically as before described. The powder compartment is supplied with powder, indicated at 16, either in pulverulent form, or in the form. of a compact as preferred. The rouge compartment is provided with a quantity of rouge, indicated at 7, which is a. much smaller quantity than the powder, and which may also be either in the compact or pul verulent form, as preferred. Both the powder and rouge are shown in the compact form in the drawing, but this is not essential. Within the rouge compartment is a small rouge puff, indicated at 8, of substantially the same diameter as the rouge compartment, and the rouge compartment is preferably provided with a separate hinged. cover, 10, of substantially the same diameter as the rouge compartment, hinged thereto, and capable of being opened whenever the main cover, 2, is raised. This interior cover, 10, will. prevent the rouge, even if in powder form, from spillin the powder compartment when the OX is inverted. Within the space between the main members, 1 and 2, of the case is the powder puff, indicated at 9, which is of substantially the same diameter as the main into.
body members, and extends over the top of the rouge compartment and its cover, if a cover therefor is provided. This arrangement enables me to provide the largest possible powder puff which is desirable in devices of this kind, while at the same time the puff is prevented from coming in contact with the rouge. In some instances the mterior cover, 10, may be dispensed with, although I prefer to provide it. If the in terior cover, 10, is not employed the rouge pufi' itself would be depended upon to form a cover forthe rouge compartment.
In using the vanity case, it will. readily be seen that upon opening it into the position indicated in Fig. 1, access may be had to the powder puff, 9, and powder, 6, and by removing the powder pufl or slipping to one side, access may be independently had to the small rouge putt, 8, and rouge, 7, by
' raising the interior cover. 1.0, while the main cover member, 2, is maintained in vertical position, with the mirror, 3, in proper position to facilitate the application of either rouge or powder, or both, without inverting the case and without the necessity of furnishing a separate mirror "for use in connection with the rouge compartment.
It is to be noted that it is within the scope of my invention to locate the rouge compartment in the main cover member instead of in the main body member if desired, in which case the mirror would be cut away to substantially surround the eccentric rouge compartment, and this form of my invention is illustrated in Fig. 3. In this figure, the main body member is indicated at, l the hinged main cover member at, 2*, the mirror within the main cover member at, 3 held in place by the retaining ring, 4 In this figure the rouge compartment, 5 is lo cated in the main cover member, 2 eccentrically thereto, so as to afford as wide a mirror space as possible, and is provided with rouge, 7 and puff, 8 and interior cover member, 10". In this form of the inven tion the entire lower portion of the main body member, l serves as the powder com partment, and contains the powder, 6", either in the form of a circular compact, or in the pulverulent form, together with a circular puff, 9 of substantially the same diameter as the body member, 1.
I WVhat I claim and desire to secure by Let- V ters Patent is 1. A vanity case comprising a main body member and a main cover member there'l or, said members being hinged together, a rouge compartment'of smaller diameter than said main members located within and eccentrically with respect to one of the said main members, and having its mouth within the space between said main members, one of said main members being provided with a powder compartment within the same, but
out of communication with the rouge compartment, a puff in said rouge compartment, a powder puff of substantially the same diameter as the said main members, located in the space between said main members and extending across the rouge compartment, and a mirror carried by said main cover member, whereby when said case is open both powder and rouge may be applied by the aid of said mirror.
2. A vanity case comprising a main body member and a main cover member therefor, said members being hinged together. a rouge compartment of smaller diameter than said main members located within and eccentri cally with respect to one of the said main members, and having its mouth within the space between said main members, one of said main members being provided with a powder compartment within the same, but out of communication with the rouge compartment, a puff in said rouge compartment, a powder pull of substantially the same diameter as the said main members, located in the space between said main members and extending across the rouge compartment, and a mirror carried by said main cover member, and an interior cover for the rouge compartment of substantially the same diameter as said rouge compartment and lo cated within the space between said main members, whereby when said case is opened, the interior cover of the rouge compartment may be opened and both powder and rouge may be applied by the aid of said mirror.
3. A vanity case comprising a main body member and a main cover member, said members being hinged together, a rouge compartment of smaller diameter than said main members located within the main body member eccentrically thereto, and adjacent to the lateral wall of the main body member, and having its mouth opening within the space between said main members, a powder compartment within said main body member exterior to the rouge compartment, and occupying substantially all the space within the main body member not occupied by the rouge compartment, a puff in the rouge compartment, an interior cover for the rouge compartment within the space between said main members, a powder puff of substantially the same diameter as the main body member, within the space between said main members and extending over the top of said interior cover of the rouge compartment, and a mirror carried by the main cover member within the same, whereby when said case is opened, either the powder or the rouge may be applied by the aid of said mirror.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature,
OSWALD 'J. OATHCABT.
