Be it known that I, PAUL CARL JEAN PAF- FRATH, citizen of Germany, residing at Altenburg, Sachsen-Altenburg, Germany, Lanhave invented certain new and use l Improvements in an Auxiliary Air Inlet for Internal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in internal combustion engines, and more particularly in engines, of the type in which means are provided for admitting secondary air to the combustible mixture, and in which the`valve controllin the supply of secondary air is controlledlby the suction transmitted from the cylinder or cylinders to the suction pipe. The object of the improvements is to provide means of this class which are simple in construction and reliable in operation. With this object in view my invention consists in providing, within a chamber communicating with the suction pipe, a piston formed with a tubular portion extending into position for discharging secondary air into the suction ipe, and providing at its inlet end a valve ody adapted to be set reiatively to a valve' seat according to the action of the suction on the piston.
In order that my invention be more clearly understood an example embodying the same has been shown in the accompanying drawing, in which the same reference characters have been used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts. In the example shown in the figures to the suction pipe c of the internal combustion engine the reduced part b or' the cylinder a is screwed, which is provided with a head h formed with holes g and a valve seat z'. Within the cylinder an annular piston d is mounted which carries a pipe e extending into the suction pipe and ormed with diverging apertures through which secondary air is distribute and discharged into the suction pipe. Theoperation of the apparatus is as follows: When starting the engine a vacuum is produced within the suction pipe c which is transmitted through the annular pesage b' to the chamber o, so that the piston d. is forced upwards by the pressure of the outer air against the pressure of the spring m, and the valve i is unseated. Therefore, a certain amount of secondary air is admitted through the holes g and the pipe e, which is discharged in a state of line distribution into the combustible mixture flowing through the suction pipe c. The elevation of the valve and the volume of secondary air supplied te the combustible mixture depend on the vacuum within the suction pipe c and on the number of revolutions or the engine. The elevation of the valve is regulated according to the requirements of the en ine by setting the disk n on the spindie Z. he operation of the piston d is not interfered with by the flow of the secondary air through the same.
While in describing the invention reference has been made to a particular example embodying the same, I wish it to be understood that my invention is not limited to the construction shown in the figures, and that various changes may be made in the General arrangement of the apparatus and t e construction of its parts without departing from the invention.
I claim:
1. The combination with the intake conduit of an internal combustion engine, of a device for supplying auxiliary air to the ressure of the outer air combustible mixture owing therethrough, con'iprising a cylinder attached to said conduit and opening therein, a piston in said cylinder, an elongated hollow member proliecting from the suction face of Said lpiston into said conduit, said hollow member being provided with a plurality of perforations through that part which projects into said conduit, said piston having a central opening communicating, with the interior of said member and terminating at the atmospheric side thereof in an annular valve face, a perorated cap on said cylinder having a central boss forming a seat for said valve face, and yieldable means for holding said valve parts in closing relation. t

The combination with the intake conduitl of an internal combustion engine, of adevice for supplying auxiliary air to the combustible mixture Howng therethrough, comprising a cylinder attached to said conduit and communicating therewith, a piston in said cylinder, an elongated hollow member projecting from the suction side of said piston into said conduit, said hollow member being provided with a number of small openings through that part which projects into said conduit, said piston having a central opening communicating with the interior" of said hollow member and terminating at the atmosphericl side thereof in a valve face, a seat for said valve face atthrough said neck into said conduit and hav-v ing a plurality of small openings in that part which projects in said conduit, Said member forming with said neck an annular passage between said conduit and cylinder, the borevof said hollow through said piston and terminating in an annular valve face, a perforated cap on saidv cylinder having a central boss forming a, seat for Said valve face, a stem attached to the upper end. of said hollow member passing axially therethrough and through said boss and cylinder cap, an abutment on said cylinder, and yieldable means c member extendingr stemLand a coil'sprng between said abutnient and cylinder cap. 1
